Color Accurate Screens Explained

  • Color Accuracy and Color Gamut Range are two of the primary elements that make up the ability for your screen to accurately reproduce colors. There is also the aspect of the Delta-E certification that classifies the level of accuracy your screen can reproduce the color gamut range it can reach. ►⏩►⏩ Laptop recommendations in the description below...
What is Color Gamut Range: A color gamut defines a more specific range of colors from the range of colors identifiable by the human eye (i.e., the visible spectrum). Since the range of colors they can reproduce varies, the color gamut is established to make these differences clear and to reconcile the colors that can be used in common between devices.

8:05 - Which is better sRGB or Adobe RGB?
8:57 - Color accurate laptop recommendations
Adobe RGB Vs sRGB Vs DCI-P3
    - sRGB covers the smallest spectrum.
    - Adobe RGB covers the largest spectrum and leans towards greens and blues
    - DCI-P3 is also popular, but still covers a smaller range the Adobe RGB while leaning towards the yellows and reds.
NTSC Vs Rec. 709 Vs Rec. 2020
    - NTSC is a range you will see on some displays (National Television Standards Committee).
    - The colors depicted under the NTSC standard is close to that of Adobe RGB, although the R and B values differ slightly.
    - Note that if you see 72% NTSC, that is nearly saying it is 72% Adobe RGB or 100% sRGB.
    - Rec. 709 is the current standard for HD TVs
    - Rec. 2020 is the standard of UHD TVs (4k 6k 8k). It is a range of colors that the certifiers are claiming even sharper, richer and more brilliant images.
    What is Delta-E?
    - If Color Gamut is the amount of color your screen can produce, what is Delta-E?
    - Delta-E is a certification that clarifies the level of accuracy at which your screen produces that range (you’ll see Delta-E less than 2 for example).
    - Delta-E is used to ensure the color being displayed closely matches what the human eye receives.
    RGB Vs CMYK
    - RGB: Red - Green - Blue (the combination creates whites).
    - CMYK: Cyan - Magenta - Yellow - Black (the combination creates black).
RGB: Digital work such as video, social media, web design, 3D animations, etc...
CMYK: Print work such as magazines, flyers, postcards, books, packaging, newsletters, etc....
Which gamut range should you pay attention to?
    - Adobe RGB is my go-to when recommending laptops for creative professionals.
    - sRGB is good, but it is definitely a smaller range and in turn will be less color accurate.

Hi there, I am trying to understand rec.2020 a little better. I am looking at filming in rec2020, but monitors seem to only have SRGB, REC709, and DCI-P3 colour gamut. Does this mean that when I am recording, I am just capturing a lot more data which then is compressed when editing in the above colour gamut's? or can you use a monitor that has rec2020 support so that you can edit it like that? if so, what happens when that footage in uploaded onto TH-cam or Instagram for example? Its a long question, but really hoping you can find the time to answer. Thank you so much!.... I've liked and subbed to your channel :)

Question, does- and if so, how does 16.7M vs 1.07B colours as well as contrast ratio affect Delta-E? This video deserves way more views! Absolutely amazing work.

    • @maxheadrom3088
      @maxheadrom3088 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't know how it affects but the 16.7M is 24 bits per pixel while the 1.07B is 30 bits per pixel. I believe the latter is what HDR10 is. AFAIK, these "words" are divided in 3 being 1/3 for each color: 24 is 8R+8G+8B while 30 is 10R+10G+10B. I think the 30 bit will be more accurate if you work with 24 bit images.

Question: I'm wanting to buy a monitor that says it's colour rating is 99% NTSC and 126% SRGB. So my question is if NTSC 99% is almost the same colour gamut as Adobe RGB (so somewhere between 90% -95% Adobe RGB) if yes, then would it be accurate to say that a 99% NTSC would be pretty close colour accuracy for graphic design (ie print). The Delta E on this monitor I'm looking at, is

@dereko9743 Yes, if you connect an external monitor that is color accurate (like 100% sRGB, DCI-P3, aRGB etc.) and use your laptop with it, you will see true colors on external monitor. But your laptop's monitor color accuracy will stay the same.

If you're not a designer, you don't need something color accurate but can benefit from the color gamut. A wider gamut will make the colors much richer and get you an overall better viewing experience. Your screen could be 4k, but if the colors are all washed out, it won't feel like it
