Nicknamed "La Ginette Neveu du violoncelle" (the Ginette Neveu of the Cello) by Paul Tortelier, Jacqueline Du Pré has had a dazzling career, destroyed by illness at only 27 years of age.Her husband Daniel Barenboim says of her: "She was a unique musician (...), she wasn't exactly familiar with what to do with music in a musicological or scientific way, but she had an astonishing instinct and speed of mind that was mind-boggling. She was seeing a piece for the first time and she was able not only to play the notes but also to get to the essential". This instinct that characterizes her we feel it wonderfully in the works of Dvorak, the sound, the magnificent phrasing, the bow attacks, the spontaneity, the always precise accompaniment of Barenboim, the power of the Chicago Orchestra very famous for its brass section, everything is present to make this recording a legendary one.
Dvořák composa son concerto pour violoncelle aux Etats-Unis, en 1895. Ce concerto remporta un grand succès lors de sa création, succès qui n’a jamais cessé de l’accompagner depuis. Il est devenu une sorte de passage obligé des grands interprètes. Brahms lui-même, l’ayant entendu se serait exclamé : « Pourquoi ne m’a-t-on pas dit que l’on pouvait écrire un concerto pour violoncelle comme celui-ci ? Si seulement je m’en étais douté, j’en aurais écrit un depuis longtemps ». Après avoir composé ce concerto, Dvořák n’écrivit plus aucun concerto ! Celui-ci brille comme une étoile solitaire, tout en intériorité. Il se voit profondément marqué par la nostalgie du pays natal. Cependant, Dvořák ne laisse pas son art lui céder, et l’optimisme reprend toujours le dessus.
Le premier mouvement se distingue par la longueur inhabituelle de son introduction orchestrale, qui semble faite pour préparer l’entrée saisissante du soliste. Les premières notes du violoncelle son fermes et péremptoires et le développement qui suit traverse des états d’âme puissants, développant une richesse mélodique qui atteint le lyrisme..
Le second mouvement, introduit et soutenu avec une douceur mélancolique par le pupitre des vents, développe au violoncelle une mélodie somptueuses (une émotion profonde mais retenue). Un tutti orchestral apparait brutalement. Alors se déploie un nouveau thème mélodique, lui aussi d’un très grande beauté. Dvořák aurait peut-être composé ou modifié ce mouvement après avoir reçu la nouvelle de la maladie grave de sa belle-soeur, Josefina Cermakova, dont il avait été amoureux avant son mariage..
Dans le dernier mouvement, l’orchestre et le soliste s’entraine l’un l’autre dans un élan ascendant, d’une vigueur héroïque. Le tout évolue, entrecoupé de passage plus pensifs, notamment la coda du violoncelle, qui aurait été ajoutée par Dvořák après l’annonce de la mort de sa belle soeur aimée. Mais irrésistiblement le ton s’élève dans la joie jusqu’à la conclusion finale, peut-être préfiguration du bonheur du retour au pays.
Le calme de la forêt est un morceau lyrique qui vient avec le temps "Lent et très chantante" pour l'introduction, un thème de rêve en ré bémol majeur, récupéré après un intermède (un peu plus rugueux) en do dièse mineur. Le projet initial, Op. 68, a eu lieu en 1883 à la demande de Fritz Simrock. Célèbre pour ses arrangements d'œuvres populaires pour d'autres instruments, Dvořák a arrangé la cinquième pièce pour violoncelle et piano, à l'occasion d'une tournée d'adieu qui a été préparé avec le violoniste Ferdinand Lachner et le violoncelliste Hanus Wihan, avant de mettre les voiles pour le Nouveau Monde. L’arrangement a atteint une telle renommée que Dvořák a fait un nouvel arrangement pour violoncelle et orchestre.

Le couple Barenboim / Du Pré s'est marié en 1967 et a été fêté comme les chouchous du monde de la musique classique. Leur histoire était empreinte de jeunesse, de glamour et de passion - et leur romance était comparée à celle de Robert et Clara Schumann. Mais en l'espace de deux ans, Jacqueline Du Pré est devenu malade. Elle a subi une opération très simple et mineure, totalement sans difficulté, mais pour laquelle elle a eu une anesthésie générale, et au réveil elle n'avait plus de sensation dans certaines parties de son corps.
Le couple s’est rencontré à Londres, chez le pianiste Fou Ts'ong, un ami commun (et gendre de Yehudi Menuhin). Barenboim parle : « Il y avait de la musique de chambre et avant de parler, nous nous sommes assis pour jouer ensemble - nous avons joué une sonate de Brahms - et nous nous sommes compris musicalement, parfaitement, et puis aussi en dehors de la musique". Elle était "une musicienne unique", poursuit-il. " Elle n'était pas exactement très au courant des choses à faire avec la musique d'une manière musicologique ou scientifique, mais elle avait un instinct et une rapidité d'esprit étonnants qui étaient époustouflants. Elle voyait un morceau pour la première fois et elle était capable non seulement de jouer les notes mais aussi d'aller à l'essentiel".

This concerto was composed by one of the greatest musical geniuses of the Romantic period, and is of amazing harmony and incredible beauty. It touches us deeply emotionally because of its fabulous musical sensibility.
The cellist is perhaps one of the best that exist so far, due to her virtuosity, superb technique and remarkable sensitivity. The interpretation of this masterpiece is one of the best I’ve heard to date. The orchestra and its direction are magnificent.

Jacqueline du Prés was famous and amired during her short life, one of the most admired cellists ever. Her endition of Dvorak cello concerto is beautiful, warm, romantic, emotional. She died after a lonfg illneess and her musical career terminated when she was just 28 years. She was young, handsome, a born musical genius. Pity.

Jacqueline du Pre had Multiple Sclerosis. Her problem was not a side effect of surgery or anesthesia as you claim in the subtitles. Her illness is well documented and no one disputes it. She was diagnosed at 27 and died from it at 42.

Beautiful and exciting performance of this late-romantic and perfectly composed cello concerto with passionate sound of the incomparable soloist and perfectly corresponding sound of the other instruments. The awesome conductor directs the highly functional orchestra in a well-phrased tempo and with dramatic dynamics. The remastered sound quality is also remarkably high as an original recording of fifty years ago. Wonderful and breathtaking at the same time!

Setting aside the great concerto, I'll bet even Dvorak couldn't have imagined Silent Woods (which is, frankly, third-rate cheese) transformed into something this special -- especially that last 70 seconds.
Du pre is lovely because the entusism and passion she tramites. But I prefere Rosyropobich HV K. Or Fournier Szell. Recordings.
I have those recordings, and I agree with you. Ms.DuPre was an exceptional cellist, however. I think she peaks with the Elgar.

This is a wonderful performance, but the video began with a commercial. Okay, then the performance began. Then three more interruptions for commercials in the first 15 minutes. Unacceptable. I stopped it at 16 minutes in. Completely ruined by interruptions. No wonder people give this a thumbs down.
Du pré's cello is too loud compared to the orchestra, this ruins the concerto recording. No praise for this one.
In the originally issued recording, the cello was not so forward. I noticed this as soon as this version started playing.
