Suvi Raj Grubb: « Everyone who worked with Jacqueline du Pré in the recording studios adored her - the musicians who played with her, the conductor, or pianist who accompanied her, the engineers, the studio assistants and I. She was the ideal recording artist, undemanding, understanding of other people's problems and with no outbursts of what is called 'temperament', which all too often in the artistic world is a synonym for ill-humour. If her chair creaked or she wanted her music-stand raised, even before she asked for help, a watchful studio assistant would rush up with: 'Leave it all to me, Miss du Pré.' For the engineers she was the perfect artist who never complained however long it took to get the right sound through the microphones. For me, the all-too-brief six years in which we worked together are a golden memory of spontaneous, unaffected, joyous music-making. In the world of music it is rare for anyone to be universally liked and admired. It is always: 'So-and-so is a fine pianist, cellist or whatever, arguably the best around', and then the qualification: 'But of course . . . ' often the retraction of the first part of the statement. Du Pré is one of possibly the only three artists I have known, about whom no one has ever said anything derogatory.
She was an unselfish player and so was an ideal partner in chamber music. And added to all this was a sheer delight in making music. You could see this in the smiles she exchanged with other players and the nods with which she acknowledged someone playing a passage especially well. She has often said to me that she hated practising and I have never arrived at her house to find her practising. Playing music, yes, but not scales or arpeggios or exercises. I cannot explain how, in view of this, at concerts and recordings the notes came so easily to her fingers and how she worked out the strongly individual interpretations which characterize her work - but then, you cannot explain genius and if I were allowed to apply that term to only one of the many musicians I have worked with, it would be to Jacqueline du Pré. »

How does Dupre do it?!! Everything she plays has soul! It doesn't matter if it's Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, Dvorak, or Elegar... she brings a cosmic quality to all of it. Can't stand the naysayers who criticize her for her lush interpretations of Classical ERA pieces. Classical era music doesn't have to sound like a swiss watch. Someone can show us the depth it has. Love these recordings!

“No one else comes close” is ackgeezer’s firmly-held opinion regarding that person’s favourite cellist. Opinions are subjective. A person may have several favourite cellists, but if one is regarded higher than the rest it is not for others to say that opinion is wrong.

@@Wattnot101 I agree. As someone who lives with depression, I often turn to Haydn. There is joy in his works, I am sure he was called Papa with great affection and for good reason.

Rather more people today use the silly ‘Papa’ nickname than ever did in his lifetime; in the 19th century, it acquired an unpleasantly pejorative tone.
It’s also a rather misleading caricature of the actual person.
      Just stick to *Joseph Haydn.*
Like most composers, Haydn covers all the emotions, and his playful ingenuity is certainly infectious, and you make a really valid point about the link between music and mental health.
You might find it of some interest to search the story of King Philip V of Spain who suffered from serious depression and melancholy; the Italian singer Farinelli was engaged to sing a number of arias every evening for the King, and it is one of the most remarkable stories of successful musical therapy.

These recordings show their age. Perhaps not so much the solo cello (though it could also be lighter), as the orchestra. Not just Baroque performance style, but also that of Viennese Classicism has undergone a tremendous stylistic change. These performances lack lightness, Rococo elegance. I personally prefer the so-called HIP performances, e.g. Jean-Guihen Queyras with the Freiburger Barockorchester.
So these may have been reference recordings when they were made, but certainly they no longer are.

    • @michaelrosa2015

And many prefer the modern orchestral sound, in the belief that if it had been available to them the composers of the past would have used them. Who knows? More important is which soind you prefer; I for one prefer the fuller sound of modern instruments played with vibrato where musically justified, but each to their own.
