    Sony could blame its failure on poor timing... they introduced MicroMV on September 22, 2001, when the economy was already doing poorly after the "dot-com bubble" burst, and obviously recent events were dominating the news.

  • @vwestlife
    @vwestlife  11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    MP2 audio was already used by D-VHS, Video CD, and DVDs by the time MicroMV was introduced, so it was an established industry standard. Even today, MP2 audio is considered to be more suitable for broadcasting than MP3 or AC3, because it has more robust error correction and suffers less degradation when re-encoded or transcoded to another lossy compression scheme.

    This is another channel I have stumbled across recently. And I'm glad that I did. Was kinda put off by the style but it reminded me of the old school TH-cam days, and I love the old tech. I'm 19 and love all of that but never got to play with any of it. I would buy some cheap computers or take some old pentium 2 computers from my high school a few years back. But, you go through a lot of detail and obviously love all this stuff too, which makes me love this channel, another sub!

    When connected to a MicroMV camcorder, Windows XP Movie Maker gives an error message when attempting to capture video, and iMovie HD '06 just ignores it and reverts to the built-in webcam. iMovie '08 incorrectly recognizes it as an HDV camcorder but otherwise works fine, and even detects the scene changes, splitting each scene into its own video clip.

    I recently picked up a DCR-IP7 from a thrift store for $10, a far cry from the original MSRP... It came with a good tape but had a dud battery and no charger. Spent $18 for a power adaptor and generic battery to find the camcorder works perfect. I bought an extra new, unopened mv cassette but decided not to open it since the original tape works okay. Doubt ill really be using this camcorder for anything since i've long switched to SD cards and anything I have that's on tape is on 8mm, Digital8 or MiniDV and i've converted most of my footage over to HDD storage. Needless to say it's a really neat camcorder. Sony was definately ahead of the game when it came to engineering but always seemed to screw up when it came to cramming their proprietary items down our throats.

  • @vwestlife
    @vwestlife  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got these for much less than that. Those sellers asking $200 for a MicroMV camcorder are just hoping that someone has a desperate need to recover video from a MicroMV tape and is willing to pay that price.

    Stupid question but... I've tried 3 different PCs and 2 different cables now, I can't get my DV camera to work on my computers to digitalize my childhood memories... I'm so close of giving up actually, I've tried for over 10 hours total now over 3 days. Dozens of drivers and fixes online, even tried it with Linux but no success either...
    Any ideas still?

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What model of camcorder are you using? Also make sure the Firewire cable connections are tight. Sometimes you need to push it in firmly to get it to work.

    • @EpicLPer
      @EpicLPer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried a Panasonic NV-DS29 and Sony DCR-HC53E, both are not recongnized by any of the 5 PCs I've tried now. Even ordered a new PCIe Firewire card now and tried it today with various drivers, nothing. Also tried 3 different cables, some options on the camcorders (which shouldn't affect it anyways since none of those affect the DV output) and even different OS versions, beginning from Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10 and even Ubuntu... I'm slowly giving up here :(

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try connecting the two camcorders to each other via a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable. If you can use that to transfer video between the two camcorders, then you know the problem is with your computer, not with the camcorders or the Firewire cable.

    • @EpicLPer
      @EpicLPer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always had at least one HD camcorder ever since I started posting videos in 2008. I just don't regularly use HD due to the large amount of disk space and time spent editing and uploading it takes. 90% of TH-cam viewers are only watching in normal definition anyway.

    The FCC has nothing to do with it, and 540p isn't even a real video standard. I only used 960x540 because that's the only non-HD widescreen resolution that the cheap version of Sony Vegas supports.

    No closed GOP? No wonder it failed. The bitrate was there for properly recording the I-frame when you started recording again. I wonder if MovieShaker covered it up too? DVHS certainly doesn't suffer this problem. I am curious if one can do Firewire dubbing between MicroMV and DVHS seeing both are MPEG-2 TS formatted video with MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio. I know its possible with HDV.

    the fact that this format's camera was not much smaller for this format was surely a drag but having smaller tape cassettes could also mean less storage space needed later to keep recorded material for those who'd keep the tapes after transferring video files to their computers ... so, this format wasn't too bad after all ...
    i guess what killed it was the camera's high price rather than the format itself perhaps, as well as people having difficulty transferring and editing its video files on their computers ... (but good quality cameras today still aren't cheap either, are they?) if i recall it right, back in the day, PCs were quite troublesome in that respect with other formats too, weren't they? they still are, if we consider the new 4K format for example, which the average PC cannot handle, for editing at least ... and that means no matter what format of camera and media storage (tape, memory card etc) we use, as soon as higher resolution sensors overtake the market (ruled by the larger screen size most people demand everyday) then even the best systems die much earlier than their days!

    I had an old Sony Handycam CCD-TR840E (I think) from about 1995, which is one year before I was born! My parents gave it to me when they bought a new Panasonic Video camera in 2006. That old Sony had a colour view finder, which was adjustable. It didn't have a fold out screen of any form which is I assume due to it being so old.
    The camera could do night vision (With infrared LEDs), and had picture effects with the ability to add titles to the video. Unfortunately It came with no easy way to hook it into the computer, so all the footage I filmed with the camera I just watched before taping over it. I really wish I had a way of storing the video because it would of been really nice to look back on it. The camera was eventually destroyed by my brother when I got a Sanyo VPC-SH1 in 2010 which I still use to this day (which takes SD cards).

  • @WebVManReturns
    @WebVManReturns 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's funny that Sony had all kinds of cassette formats that died and the UMD format which died, yet somehow their Blu-Ray format won over HD-DVD which is a true shame as I would much prefer to have the ability to carry one disk which plays in both standard and HD format.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sony owns several big motion picture companies (including Columbia), so they were able to get a large amount movies released on Blu-Ray, which is why it beat HD-DVD in the marketplace.

    • @BLY99
      @BLY99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WebVMan Blu ray has much better video quality and was also more future proof.

    • @BLY99
      @BLY99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +vwestlife Actually Sony learned from how Betamax lost to VHS and got a lot of hardware and movie partners to join it. Also the PS3 having a built in Blu Ray player made it so that way more people had Blu Ray players than HD DVD players and because of that Blu Ray movies outsold them by a huge margin.

    • @YukariYakumo0
      @YukariYakumo0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +WebVMan UMD was essentially euthanized by Sony, the gamers were still enjoying their UMD PSPs (and many still do) but Sony released the PSP Go, which of course was a flop before finally releasing the PS Vita, which did much better than the PSP Go, but was still not very successful mostly because many gamers didn't want to buy a handheld that was not fully backwards compatible besides buying the games again digitally or using ones they already had gotten digitally on their PSP or PSP Go (which the majority didn't have). I still see people who love their PSP and play their UMDs, just as I see people who still enjoy their PS2s or PS3s. But it's easy to see why they did, UMD based PSPs were big, and most of all, both the UMDs and the reader inside the PSP were more expensive than releasing games on memory cards or digitally. In addition, the readers were more fragile along with the discs.

    • @YukariYakumo0
      @YukariYakumo0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +WebVMan Also, many companies did develop hybrid discs that would both play as a Blu-Ray and a DVD such as this: readwrite.com/2008/12/21/hybrid_blu-ray_dvd_disc_announ, but it was never fully adopted, although for a while many movies came on a dual sided disc that provided similar functionality along with the movies that came in a dual disc pack. If they adopted the hybrid discs, it would have been possible to release movies that were playable on both systems, but didn't cost extra.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, it doesn't work in iMovie 10 anymore. You need iMovie '08 to '11. But it really works best with an older version of Sony Vegas on a PC -- then it can actually split the video into scenes without the visible corruption.

    Dude, i have the exact same camcorder as yours. I have videos of me as a kid, but i dont know how to transfer it to digital. Please help if you can.
    Were you using the micromv to usb cable or the dc in?

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't work over USB. You need a computer with a FireWire (also known as IEEE-1394 or i.Link) input. On Macs you can use a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, but a cheap USB to FireWire adapter will not work.

    Yeah, I googled after I left the comment(maybe I should have done that before!) and read up on mp2 a bit. I was going off the only mp2 files I ever remember running across in the past, which sounded like pure crap. This was back in either 1996 or 1997 when I first discovered mp3 files, and occasionally ran across mp2 files as well. They rrobably were from a bad source and low bitrate, since even mp3s at the time where 96, 112, or 128k.

      DVHS was a consumer-only format I'm afraid, the (now outdated) pro VHS derivatives are dead, the last holdout being DigitalS.
      Digital Betacam's on its last legs, too; hard drives and flash memory are eating up the market.

  • @sandmanxo
    @sandmanxo 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    What an oddity with a bunch of odd design choices. First, the obscure tape format, and then to not write an on startup is just plain silly. Then, picking mp2(as in mpeg 1, layer 2 I assume) audio is another odd choice, and a fairly low bitrate for that codec to produce good audio outside of human speech. Top it off with an obscure battery package and you got all the makings of a flop!

    Also, the "PC Editing" line is only good if you have a firewire port. Strange thing about that, I've only seen that native in Tablet PCs (not to be confused with tablets, I'm talking about convertable tablet laptop PCs, which I assume is due to their use in editing and converting videos). I have yet to see a desktop PC that has firewire built in by default.

    Thank Osiris they came out with DVD 8cm camcorders. A camera that you have to do a lot of work to edit and archive to a easily playable format is not going to be a camera you use very often. But with the DVD camera you don't think twice before shooting a moment you don't think will happen again. And since you recorded the DVD yourself there's no copy protection so it's just 'cat /dev/sr0 |pv >/home/yourname/Videos/Digital_Camera_Videos/my_dvd_movie.iso'
