  • How do you start a new church? Dustin Serns from LifeBridge Church shares 5 steps to help you start a missional-focused church in your area based on their experience with church planting in Tacoma, WA.
5 Steps to Start a New Church:
    1. Pray and Recruit
Learn how Jesus will help you find people for your team who are hungry, humble and smart
    2. Seek God's Vision
Study Scripture, your community and your team to discover the vision God has for you as a church. Identify your primary focus group to know who specifically to seek to bless and reach.
    3. Live on Mission
Based on your vision, choose 1-3 ministries to launch with and start them a few months before you launch. Commit to living on mission personally through missional-incarnational rhythms to bless people and build friendships in the community.
    4. Begin Worshipping Together
Begin monthly worship gatherings to lead up to a weekly worship presence.
    5. Create a Discipleship Pathway
Create a plan for how to make disciples. Define what qualities or practices you want to help people grow in. How can people decide for, prepare and celebrate baptism? How will you help people grow in their faithfulness to Jesus?

The example mentioned of mishional-incarnational rhythms (BELLS) was drawn from Michael Frost, Surprise the World: The Five Habits of Highly Missional People.

I'm interested in learning more about how you started your dental clinic. I would like to start a church with the mission to rehabilitate people in the clutches of hard drugs, and take them out of the public parks and off the sidewalks, giving them a clear path to sobriety and a way to integrate into society as a contributing citizens. There is a HUGE need for it in our community in Southern oregon and people are very divided on how to deal with it the issues of homelessness and drugs.

Very informative. I have a question, what’s with the young “professional” families? What about those who are not professional?
That “professional” emphasis seems like it’s because they can give more money to the church.

Great question! We want everyone to become a passionate follower of Jesus. We just recognize that different kinds of people are reached different ways. We choose to be intentional about the demographic we are seeking to reach while welcoming everyone who would like to be a part. Thankfully our church has people from all different socio-economic backgrounds. We have been able to provide $700,000 worth of free dental, vision, and medical care through inviting professionals to serve with us to help those in the community who don't have access to the care they need. We hope to see other churches planted in our area that can strategically reach other people groups we are not optimized to reach.

Awesome! It sounds like God has put a burden on your heart and given you an opportunity to help others know him. The first step is "Who can you recruit on your team?" Is there anyone that would join you in raising up a new church in your area? Remember that the church is the people, not the building. Who are the people in your community who are receptive and open to taking this journey with you?

As a pastor, church planter and professor I am interested as to why the information presented in this video is being passed off as though the information is the presenters creation. There are no links, no mentions, nothing included giving credit to Paul Lencioni "Humble, Hungry, Smart," and other's. The presenter is presenting information as though he himself has come up with this information, yet he is in many places directly quoting others books. I was sent this video by a former student who noticed. We all want to spread the gospel and grow healthy, missional churches, but passing off the information of others who have done the work, research, learned the lessons, and sought God's guidance in planting and developing the material should be given credit and shared. Please breakdown the time stamps and the information given with appropriate links to the material the presenter pulled from. That would actually benefit the effectiveness and audience of this video more than it currently does.

Thank you for sharing! It sounds like God has given you some exciting experiences in His mission. There is no intent to take credit from others in this video, but to apply church planting principles from our personal experience. For example, I have heard many in the leadership space mention the terminology, "hungry, humble, smart," but I have never heard/read anyone share specifically how those characteristics would be defined/reflected/applied in the church planting space (or even the spirituality/church/mission space) like I shared in the video. You may notice that the definitions/explanations given for each term are original. The only insight I took directly from a book is BELLS from Michael Frost's Surprise the World: The Five Habits of Highly Missional People. In the video, I make it clear that we did not come up with BELLS and knew it would be very easy for anyone to find if they looked it up, but I am happy to also add a citation in the video description upon your recommendation. If you know of any other sources that you think should be cited based on the concepts from this video, please email them to me at lifebridgeway@gmail.com.

I love this...churches have become dry hypocritical country clubs with no love no heart no empathy...and does not use the gospel as the greatest tool to reach the world... extremely sad
