I appreciate the information being shared. I think the one thing missing from the whole conversation is that it is not our job to ‘build’ the church or bring the entire package to the table before stepping out when called. We don’t see that example in scripture and the church grew exponentially. This doesn’t mean that planning is not necessary. It just means we don’t need everything in place and rolling before starting a work. We have been involved in numerous plants that only had a handful of people (15 or fewer) and none of the bells and whistles (worship teams, AV equipment, coffee ministries, etc.) and each of those churches is still thriving today (8 to 20+ years later). Each of these churches range from 115+ to 300+ members. Not megachurches but definitely powerful, spirit led ministries. I would encourage church planters to be prayerful, patient, and willing to step out when everything isn’t in place if God is asking them to trust Him. Blessings!

Seeing this 2 years after the initial recording; THANK YOU!!! Your insights from observation and experience are invaluable, I am taking all of it to heart as I prepare to launch a new ministry.

Im single so not Married or seeing anyone.
I do a lot of evangelism ether out on the streets praying for people or out doing my motorcycle ministry.
Can I be a church pastor being single?

Cold start churches do need a lead "The Guy." However, humility needs to be his key. Giving away power as God adds others with gifting is a must.

The "baggage" thought is quite interesting... in the idea of too quickly empowering folks. Once again tho, St Augustine tells us that every person that comes our way is sent by God for a reason.

Great discussion. 16:00 I agree when it comes to church planting we need to be sure we are differentiating the 2 different types of church planting. There many such as in league with NPL desire smaller "house" style churches while others desire the modern "western" church that seeks to address a more diverse group of Believers. The main difference between the 2 is the latter requires you to be an educated theologian from an accredited seminary. And the former should be composed of 1 main group having an educated theologian who is able to support multiple house churches. Most people are quite familiar with the large western style church in America but the new Asian style of "house" church still needs further development in my opinion.
Each house church would be a less diverse group that can handle most issues internally. Since there will arise issues that can't be handled internally, there needs to be a strong network of these house churches that work together to cover all needs of the members. That is why I feel like each of these networks needs an educated theologian at the top level who can properly administer the network and address issues and concerns. Each "house" church could support a specialty that others can rely such as marriage counselor or grief counselor, among others. The top-level "house" would direct and support all downline members where to go for help. This is one area I think needs further development in the "house" church. Another area of concern with this type of church (and the western church too) is the need to root out incorrect and false doctrines quickly when they arise. Since the "house" church is more communal style of fellowship, I feel like they would be best suited for "correcting" members as those issues arise.

The American church! If one waited for someone to approve them in an assessment and the perfect amount of folks then you would never plant a church! Who says you have to have it all together! Why can’t you come and just worship the Lord and teach his word in a church setting? Critical mass? One size does not fit every situation!

I think we provide the caveat in the episode that many of these "mistakes" are targeted at a particular type of church in a particular context. That said, we know of many church planters whose churches have closed or never got off the ground due to these mistakes. Thanks for the feedback!
