My grandma made this. She was born in 1918 and she got it from her mom. She used pretty much the same ingredients, but she would chop the apples and put them in a bowl with a little spoon of sugar. Then let the apples brown in the bowl. I have looked for thirty years for this version of the recipe and haven't found it. After the apples turned brown for about a half hour, she added a little spoon of flour, stirred it in, she said it kept the apples from separating front he cake or something. After making the cake, shed make a regular batch of pralines but instead of pouring them on a buttered plate, it went onto this cake. And it seals the moisture in, makes this cake so delicious. Old timers know about this cake and I'm so glad people are reviving this lovely dessert.

I made this cake yesterday 11/15/20 and it now my go to cake. I added 2 tsp of cinnamon used pecans (had pecans left over from icing for My German Chocolate cake). I also used about 1 1/3 cups Simply Apple Juice. My sauce was a lil thicker because I used sweetened condensed milk (made it my own). Thank you so much Mae Mae for this recipe!!! I planned on freezing slices like you do because it's just my husband and I, but let's just say that may not happen because we only have half of it left 😁❤

Hi Mae Mae, I am making this cake now, and it smells heavenly just like you said. The only thing is, I couldn't find my baking soda and had to use a substitute of three tsps of baking powder recommended by the test kitchen. I sure hope it does come out as good as yours.
