  • Authentic village of heritage and art, Tourrette-Levens is located just 12 km from Nice. A real perched village, it still has a tower of its castle of medieval origin. Accessible by climbing the castle and its picturesque setting, you will discover an exceptional panoramic view between the sea and the mountains. Several cultural events come to animate this place, as well as the whole of the town, which also has three free museums and a superb Baroque church.
In addition to the particular care given to heritage, there is a real interest in "today's" art: little by little, the town has acquired many sculptures. You can admire the stone man by Max Cartier who sits at the entrance to the village or works by Jean-Pierre Augier and even Albert Chubac, artist honored in all the buildings of the city. Others like Ernest Pignon Ernest, James Franta, Brazillier or Gilli have also invited themselves to this town, a friend of culture.
    Historical
The remains found on this territory testify to a human presence from the Paleolithic era. It was then occupied by the Ligurians and then by the Romans.
From the 12th century, the stronghold of Tourrette belonged to the Chabauds, powerful local lords who also owned a large part of Châteauneuf. The citadel perched on a rocky outcrop, originally included six towers. It was built in 1176 by Raimond Chabaud, at a location of great strategic importance because it overlooks an old Roman road that has become a salt road.
From 1840, the tourrettans abandoned the primitive village to settle near arable land.
In 1992 the castle was bought by the municipality, since then it houses the natural history museum.
    Points of interest
The castle: a historic site in an exceptional setting. Its dominant position made it possible to monitor the road and protect against enemy attacks. It now offers visitors an exceptional panorama both from the sea side and from the mountain side. The castle park is often the scene of many cultural events such as the "Musical and Cultural Nights" festival, the medieval festival or the "Photographic Encounters".
The butterflies and natural history museum: the Château de Tourrette-Levens houses a collection of 5,000 butterflies and insects from all over the world, highlighting biodiversity but also species unique in their beauty and specificities. Over the years, the museum has set itself the task of creating, through purchases or donations, a veritable "conservatory" of natural history, now known and recognized. The space intended for permanent exhibitions represents more than 280 m²: it is organized into different themes.
Entomology occupies an important place there with a dozen collections of different origin and importance, totaling a reserve of nearly 70,000 copies in addition to the collections on display. The museum also offers spaces called "Dioramas", where you can observe more than 320 stuffed animals from the five continents presented in decorations carefully reconstructing their environment. Enthusiasts will also be able to appreciate a regional geology room made up of more than 300 samples of rocks, minerals and fossils, as well as a rich malacology collection of 250 shells, gorgonians, madrepores and echinoderms from all the seas of the world.
The museum of traditional trades: built in a "Maison Rempart", the museum presents a private collection of 6000 authentic tools dated between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The collection is presented in the form of reconstructed workshops. Fun visit for young and old.
The museum of prehistory: recently inaugurated, in the Maison Rempart which houses the museum of trades, the museum of prehistory bears witness to the rich prehistoric heritage discovered in the town. The exhibition "The golden age of prehistoric hunters" addresses major themes of the Paleolithic period, starting from the excavations carried out on Tourrette-Levens and linking them to the great discoveries of other major sites.
Place and chapel of the White Penitents: it dates from the 11th century. Its architectural interest lies in the triangular bell tower, the only visible vestige of the chapel. From the square, you can see the old ancient road linking Cimiez and Embrun as well as the salt road. It is especially for its picturesque aspect that this place is renowned.
Saint Rosalie Church: it dates from the 12th century. Inside there is a very beautiful Baroque altar, a wooden statue from the 13th century, a reliquary statue from the 17th century, and a pieta altarpiece dating from the 17th century by the Nice painter Rocca.
