- When the invading Roman army swept towards London, history suggests that they must have established a fort stronghold somewhere along the way to oversee supply lines and regroup. But it has never been found.
Now, however, the grounds of a Kent hotel have yielded a wide range of intriguing finds: ditches, ramparts, coins and pottery.
Could this be the missing link in the Roman invasion? Tony Robinson and the Team have just three days to find out whether the Syndale Park Motel is actually home to the first British Roman fort.

Roman soldiers, upon finally reaching their 25th year, were allowed to retire. And have farm land. So I wouldn't be surprised if a retired soldier would make "military" style ditches as boundary lines for his land. It would be what he knew how to do, and he would teach his heirs how to do the same thing. It's obvious that at least one multi generational family had that land, or that the original retired soldier farmer passed it on to another retiree. It's too bad that the later farmers and land holders felt that they had to scrape everything Roman out of the way.
If we dont build over roman sites, we'd need to move countries because virtually the whole country has roman stuff like this. Just because something is old, doesnt make it valuable. Look in your rubbish bin, thats basically what they are digging up most of the time. However, history can be preserved, they can bury it, then build on top. Farming does far more damage in fact.

I enjoy TT immensely and appreciate Reijer Zaaijer bringing them to us. The funniest sentence I heard was "at least we are not superannuated old hippies. Love the word and its meaning. Putting it in my must-use vocabulary.
And if anyone has been watching Alice Roberts' successor show 'Digging for Britain', that first Roman fort has been found, albeit some years after this show died.

I take exception to the description of Claudius as a doddering half wit. He certainly had a stammer which made it difficult for him to preside over religious rites, which had to be conducted with perfection or you had to start over. However, he managed to survive the murderous reign of Caligula, in which the appearance of being a half wit would be a good survival gambit. However, we know that he wrote a dictionary of Etruscan, which is one of the most lamented of lost books of antiquity. He was likely an introverted scholar, and not well suited to high octane politics, but he seems to have done reasonably well , bar choice of wives.
Agreed, when Guy said that I had to fight the desire to scream. Guy really irritates me, he frequently seems like an arrogant elitist. At the very least, Claudius was an Emperor of Rome while Guy is a legend in his own mind.
Indeed, I’m actually a fan of Claudius- he suffered from pre-conceived notions of ANY fault..even stuttering would alter his perception and add to a ‘legend’ of stupidity and when you study Claudius, he was actually a very smart guy. No Augustus or Marcus Aurelius but really, who is?

Every single time I watch an episode where Neil is the site director instead of Mick, nothing goes to plan and it always ends in disappointment.
I think that is about the longest trench I've seen so far in any episode. They were really grasping at straws on this one. Still very interesting. Thanks for uploading.

Despite their not having found a fort it was still a fun dig to watch! Its good to see a common mans farm instead of the fancy villa or Military installation.
It was fun seeing Tony being systematically humbled as the site went from Roman fort to fancy villa to common man's farm-stead. You could tell he hated it every time he had to concede his "lofty" and some-what "snobbishly posh attitude." Everyone likes great finds but the common farmer plays a large part in history. We just don't hear much about them because peasant farmers don't make very interesting Telly in some people's minds. Pity!
I worked on Hardrians Wall with Tony Wilmott, living out of Vindolanda fort. Theres even a statue of him in the museum there.

I don't agree with Phil's assessment of the Roman spade - 'poorly designed'. It seems to be a well designed turfing iron or turf spade. They are still used today. Well-sharpened, it may also have doubled as a handy back-up weapon much as spades were used in WW1 for close-quarters trench combat.
It is not a shovel though which is what Phil was presumably mainly using it as. Roman soldiers may have used wicker baskets instead for shovelling loose soil.

This one bothers me. Either I'm missing something, or they've dismissed the fort idea way too easily here. They cut trenches either side of Paul's ditches expecting the ditches to carry straight on, not even considering the ditches might have turned. There's no reason to assume an early fort would have had a strict rectangular or playing card shape.
The ditch run either side of Paul's trenches could also have been quarried away either by ridge and furrow or later landscaping. Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence.
would love to find some old coins. Just one good Roman coin is all I would want.

Usually gives me the urge for fish or poultry and a tankard of mead or ale watching this. Hopefully when they plan to build on land they do surveys and the actual digging for the foundations would discover any ancient items or sites to excavate more? Did the hotel owner and staff get nervous when the team arrived and possibly booked rooms for the duration?

This is not very much to the subject of this show whatsoever, but I've always been admiring how wonderful hair does Carenza have, so healthy, thick and luscious. What would I give to have the hair of that quality, regardless of the colour.

What about the Roman fort at Pevensey in East Sussex? Thats in the south east. Sp clearly there are other Roman forts.
The Time Team Team have seen more of Britain than any other group on the planet. What I am sure astounds our foreign viewers is the sheer space of the UK countryside.

In 1999 a roman fort was discovered in Syndale, Kent near NEAR FAVERSHAM
It‘s a cold day...and then there‘s Phil in a roman costume with very little coverage in the nether regions...
Poor sweet Phil. They should have done this one a few years earlier when he was in better shape. Having the poor guy out there in the cold in that little tunic was just cruel.

I realize this is a little late - (great show, by the way) but I don't think that's a scale weight - it looks like a plumb bob to me. I've got one almost exactly like it. When you hit on the perfect shape for something it stands to reason that it should remain the same for damned near forever.

What happened to the elephants?
Nobody knows, is the honest answer. I suspect they were actually brought over for their sheer 'shock and awe' value: for someone who's never seen an animal bigger than a large bull, an elephant would have been a terrifying sight. And I suspect they had special handlers, and if, as with horse handlers, they bonded with the animals, they probably eventually went back to Europe. At least, I'm not aware that any elephant bones have been found in 1st century contexts in Britain (although it would be nice to be proved wrong!)

The problem with english is that they do not see that there was already trade between mainland and england before roman times. Especially between Rhineland and england. This trade would be more north. Between germanic groeps and keltic groeps.
The invasion of romans is because of these trade-routes they were interested.
Shortest way for romans was the southernroute.

I suspect the fort was redesigned over time as more troops arrived with more supplies. This would fill ditches with later finds and wouldn't preclude an original fort there that was "demolished' in the remodel.

A hypothesis, for which I freely admit I have no evidence at all: could Roman soldiers have begun to establish a fort, then been driven away in an attack by hostile tribes before finishing the task? It seems possible that might have happened, perhaps elsewhere if not here. They've said that some soldiers dug while others kept guard, but I've never heard if their guard was always successful.
Not in Southern England.
They had already established trading relationships in Southern England with local tribes. Some of which were friendly enough with the Romans to invite them in. One of the impetus for the invasion.

I never did understand why Dr Chris Gaffney, geophysicist, 31:3-0, who was the original geo phys guy, got pushed aside in favor of John.
He had/still has an extensive career. He was pretty busy. John was his business partner. I doubt he was pushed out.

2 possible reasons for Neil's meeting. 1 They kicked him out so they could change everything and save the episode (it worked). 2 He is employed by Developers for his amazing ability to never find anything, to cut down on archaeologic expenses
