- In a field near Lincoln, an array of Anglo-Saxon brooches, pins and clasps uncovered by metal detectorists point to an undiscovered cemetery.
But to find out how old the cemetery is, how big it was and how long it was used for, Tony Robinson and the Team must find the graves.
And when they discover part of a shield with a skeleton that appears to be female, the search takes a startling new twist.

It's called Time Team as everyone brings their skills and characteristics together for a common purpose. it's an example of everyone contributing with their knowledge and experience to inform and entertain us viewers. If they don't always appear to be perfect then perhaps we should examine our own lives and discover what might annoy others about our words and actions. Maybe those who express their criticisms freely and often here would be a bit more tolerant of what happens in these shows. I know my faults and am amazed at others patience with me over the years. A compliment and a smile instead would benefit the giver and receiver. Just needs practice. Try it!

@@richardphillips6281as I understand it, Victor drew thousands of images that are used in both children's historical storybooks, historical texts of all ages (both reader and historical material covered), as well as drawings used in history books used at every level of school. His images should live on for many more years. Even if the people looking at him have no idea whom he was.

As a female who is over 6 foot tall (6-1.5), I feel great to know that the genetics for this are not exactly recent. It's fun to see she was a warrior too! We tall girls must stick together!
In my short life I have seen many women nearly 7 feet tall. It is not rare at all. I love it when they find tall mates. Their children are not necessarily tall. genetics is fascinating.
They discovered that there was a significant spreading of the skeleton and that she was likely more like 5'7", still quite tall for a female during that time

@@ellicooper2323 although I'm no expert, I know that soil has a tendency to move and disperse as time goes on. They actually cover how the bones spread out and what her actual height was at about 47:00

Time Team is a great show! I never have to look for a special episode since they're all special. Each ep has its own story to tell and they always keep it interesting! I'm a lifelong fan!

The wire coil wasn't disappointing for John. He located a metal object. That's his role. The nature of the find is way beyond his control.

Especially since there is an exact science, called surveying. He "didn't find it necessary" because his e-bay buyer didn't want exact coordinates. What I wanna know is what he took outta that grave and off that field that he didn't tell anyone about. He was probably thrilled when TT came along. Probably got twice as much for his finds from that field after that.
So heartwarming to see a person holding a precious object belonging to them.

I love this show. Thank you so much for posting these videos. I do wish that they had more than 3 days to excavate, especially on a site like this one which was so rich in finds. I'm sure there are still a lot of things to be found in that field. Pity so much has already been lost to ploughing.
Interesting that Jimmy Adcock again gets the highest geophys credit in the rollup. He also got it a few episodes ago, which I thought was a caught mistake because John Gater was back on top again for the next episode. Early days, Chris Gaffney was getting the first credit. Then John took it over for years.
I'd have to pay closer attention but perhaps they sometimes listed the geophysics team alphabetically. I'm not quite sure what their group structure is. John nearly always says "Jimmy's radar" or "Sue's radar". Not sure if he's their leader giving his team members due credit or if they're more of a collaboration of professionals of equal "rank" and John is just on camera more.
Everyone seems to forget that for a few seasons now Kerry Ely has dug right by Phil's side and does so much more. The man is always working or pitching in. I wish I had commented on him before so we would watch his work ethic more. But Matt was in the last 2 episodes so I guess I will watch his work progress & Helen Again!!!!! Yippee Helen
Kerry will soon make the transition to permanent Site Supervisor (which he has occasionally already been credited with). In that role he was responsible for everything about the entire site, including food, sanitation, safety, shelter.

And in this episode, in another TT first, a bloke dead for 1,500 years has his pint swiped by Phil.
Nick was rather severe on Phil about that pint pot. "Get your mind back on the job, Phil" while Phil is all oooh, yeah, been there all roight.
Phil should have brought the bloke a fresh pint and buried it as a replacement.

They were wrong about the function of a shield boss. It's main role is to protect the hand that's holding the shield. The axe test showed the exact reason for the need to protect your hand by a steel boss. Then the pin on the top of the boss is not for catching and breaking swords, it's too small for that. Swords of the time were wide blades with little edge taper google image search migration era swords, the disc on the end of the boss is too small to hold a blade and be able to break one. The blade would twist right off the pin. But the pin is perfect for catching the edge of your opponents shield to push it out of the way in a bind. If you and your opponent are pressing shields together you can use the pin to control their shield, move it enough to make an opening for your sword. Later shields just have a round boss without the pin, they are without because they are very situational and can also be used against you by the opponent intentionally putting his shield edge against the pin and creating an opening. Binding shields together in combat is not a common tactic because it limits what you can do, like use the shield to stop an incoming attack. So rarely done and the pin can be used against you just as much as used by you? Better off without them.
Also the shields were much thinner at the edge and thicker around the boss like 1/8th of an inch edge and 1/2 center. They also used very thin sheets of rawhide rather than thick leather. The edge cover was also thin rawhide. They were thin like that to get blades stuck into the shield rather than simply stop them. If your blade is stuck in your opponents shield you have no weapon anymore. Thin edge makes a sword blade hitting the edge sink deeply into the shield and cannot be extracted in the heat of combat, that's why they are thin and have very little covering them. You want your opponents blade stuck deep into the edge of your shield because it is better stuck there than in you.
This was such a wonderful program. It is a shame its time has passed.

I have always wondered why there isn't a vehicular geophysical array (say 10 devices) so they can cover a lot more ground more quickly.
They have used a few types of motor ones one had a wheel fall of, another rain got in its computer and it had to stop😊

I'd love to see a 2-3h documentary where they excavate the rest of this site and lift all the burials and grave goods. Not only would it be fascinating but that'll be the only way to preserve them what with all the plowing going on.
It amazes me that anyone can choose to be a farmer in Britain given all the history of the islands. Every time you sink your plow into the soil there's a very good chance you're destroying archaeology.

I mean John and geophysics can't date what is in the ground, they can just say something is there, give an estimate of depth, and say if it's metallic/burning or not

With the last pic imagining the barro and graves, the barro reminded me of the shield with the mound as the shield boss. I wondered, does anyone know the history of that type of shield?

Many females were six foot and taller, about as often as there were males that size. We know this from written histories and skeletal remains. And often the women were warriors, beside their brothers or husbands, fighting beside them. I have one ancestor whose husband was executed unjustly who became a Pirate. She terrorized all nations around her until she found love again and must have also found forgiveness, because she gave up pirateering for raising a family. Gender was not as confining for women back then as some men seem to think it is today. But that is changing for the better.

I bet you'd find that there were tribes during the Saxon period that had warrior women and others that didn't. And the tribe that used this cemetery did have warrior women.
Your instinct is likely correct, but it may be more than tribal. Though we call it the Anglo-Saxon period, in the early years, there were several distinct ethnic groups (native Britons/Celts, Jutes, Franks, Frisian, Angles and Saxons). Each had their own identity and customs, which likely would have been retained well into the period depending on one's lineage.

It would be so cool if there was an entire ethnic group in the British Isles that had a culture of warrior women and we just haven't figured it out yet. There were other cultures with warrior women around the world, so it isn't that far-fetched.
Probably said before, but the guy with the large beaker could have been the brewer or potter rather than a drunkard, i.e. important and respected rather than laughed at. On the other hand, up until quite recently, I believe it was the older women that did the brewing (though I'm not sure).

Why can't henges (1) not be a household, (2) a livestock barn and paddock, (3) a religious site, (4) a burial/cremation sacred site, (5) a military fort, (6) an industrial kiln/woodworking/metal working et al site, .....
In the Norse Sagas, they talk about the annual gathering of the tribes, just like a State Fair, and all issues, legal, criminal, and martial were held at some special site, available for a large number of temporary campers. Why can't Stonehenge and other non-artifact henges be althings ?
+John Lord Because archaeology does not say they can. Some sites have had change of use of a long period of time. Of course time could stretch from pre-history to present day. Avebury stone ring has a whole village in it. Ancient peoples often utilized existing sites, respecting the sacredness of burial sites.
Practically all those things leave behind something that they can be identified from. Haven't you watched the show? "Henge" is the leftover category of "ditched enclosures we cannot identify (yet)". (Kidding. Mostly.)
I could make Stonehenge turn into (1) a stone thatched house (with wattle-and-daub Tudor-like a medieval house post-and-beam construction walls between the stone pillars) for multiple people with a central fireplace. There are other nearby henge circles in the fields that I noted in the aerial photos to the local university - making this a stone-thatch house community on the Salisbury plains. Stone houses warm heated in the winter, and naturally cool and dark in the summer. (2) One could even use the same construction as a gigantic smokehouse and larder warehouse for the local thatch house community. (3) One could even use the stone thatched house as an icehouse for storing meats and perishables. Henges being used as an "authoritarian" archaeological religious site is a default BS statement. Avebury is a paleo-/meso-/neo-lithic site and a boundary region with an entrance - no one can accurately say that it is religious, a warlord's or king's domain, or boundary markers for a community within it. So quit shiting the people about what it is or is not. Just say - "we don't know - but we are trying to solve that problem."
I had several thoughts after this episode. First, that actual Anglo-Saxon settlers coming from mainland Europe would hardly have been unused to seeing large prehistoric monuments and borrows in the landscape, but may have brought their culture of respecting those monuments with them. Nor would any of the native people who had always been there. Second, that it seems clear from this episode and others on Anglo-Saxon burials that there definitely was, at least until the advent of Christianity, a cultural norm for females to have status and be warriors.

I wish these people would get over the fact that not all these ancient peoples were midgets. Or that all warriors were male. Female warrior also didn't always come in as second line fighters either. They were known to be 6'+ be they Celts types or saxon/germanic types. The "midgets" were the Romans.

Several of these episodes start with some joker telling time team he found artifacts in a certain spot. They dig and dig and never find hide nor hair of what they've were told.

That there was no invasion of Germanic peoples. The Celtics adopted the customs and language.
But there was Germanic (Anglo-Saxon) migration to Britain from the early 5th century, and then later Danish and Norwegian Viking settlement of quite large areas of central and northern Britain and Ireland. This is attested in genetic analysis, linguistic evidence, literary texts and archaeological discoveries. On what basis do you suppose that there was no Germanic settlement?

Tony is a nitwit. The shield boss is there to protect the hand and perhaps to detain an opponents weapon on the nail in the center. Since the shield is made of wood and can be pierced, chopped, hacked, and otherwise damaged; the boss was there to give the off hand a bit more protection, not to "Batter opponents" 12:00.
Thats his job... to ask the silly questions half of us think while watching.
