    One of the greatest bands of all time. I can’t even put in to words how much King’s X has influenced me, changed how I listen to music, and how I approach my instrument. All three members bring such a unique style and feel to their music that no one else comes close to. Thanks for showing Jerry some love! I saw them live in Toronto in April, and between every song the crowd kept chanting “JERRY JERRY JERRY JERRY” it was truly magical. What a special night.

    You're absolutely right about the unique identity. I would only add that what makes them so great is what they add to the collaboration of the song. They find a way to craft a song, not by adding a bunch of fills and grooves that wouldn't make sense, but adding what would be the best part to or for the song.
    Perfect examples for each one for me is Jerry's drum parts for the song "We Were Born to be Loved". Now that is one hell of a unique and creative groove and drum parts for that song. Take out any of it or change any of it and the piece falls apart.
    For Neil Peart and Rush that song would be La Villa Strangiato and the syncopated grooves he does before the solos in 6/8. Wow, til this day I've not heard anything like that since.
    Both songs were not easy to learn and took some time to finally get it down and play it correctly.

    This is amazing! I met Jerry back at Southwest Missouri State University. He and I spent time in my garage playing on my kit. Back then they were called The Edge. You could already tell they were going to make it. Jerry was so freakin' humble, and kept complimenting my playing. At that time I was totally into Bozzio, and he was more mainline. But I couldn't help but think how "appropriate" his playing was for each song. I have to tell you, only now do I realize they went on to be King's X. It just blows my mind!

    Quite often, in a lot of those quads (RLKK RLKK), he alternates like (RLKK LRKK RLKK LRKK). He does the same with swiss triplets, normally a 6 note pattern of RLRLKK, he'll alternate with LRLRKK. And my favorite thing he does is a four note triplet bomb kind of thing like in the end of "Don't Care" on Dogman. Both hands at the same time, sometimes locked together, sometimes flams, but basically HKHK where H means hands. It will sound like "trip pull it one". Snare Kick Toms Kick, Toms Kick Toms Kick.
    All of his licks and chops are like sentences and phrases to him, so can just chain them together in any combination and just flow.
    Also, check Jerry out on the Galactic Cowboys' "Let It Go" album. In King's X he plays a lot of different ways with different feels, but most of the time he has a Bonham kind of laid back, deep pocket groove. Older songs had a bit more of a pushed, sitting on the edge of your seat, Stewart Copeland kind of feel and that's what's all over the Galactic Cowboys album. Leaning forward, pushing the band without it feeling rushed, its just kinda on the edge, leaning forward.
    SERIOUSLY underrated drummer. An absolute monster.

    King's X smash!

  • @bryanpowers
    @bryanpowers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    As a drummer myself, I agree with your assessment. Ive thought about Jerry's contribution to the King's X sound over the years. His vocals are a huge part as well. One thing NO ONE focuses on is his lyrics and songwriting. He's a genius on both accounts, putting him in a league of his own. Phil Collins and Neil Peart cant write lyrics like Jerry. I believe that's an underappreciated element of those first 4 albums. It added a mystery and sophistication that dUg and Ty couldn't bring in their own. What I find interesting about his drumming is the influence of Ty and dUg's drum machines. Listening to the demos, the drum parts were written by a nondrummer, so they have a rhythmic quirk to them and Jerry played them pretty note for note faithful. So, the drumming in King's X is kinda three people. Jerry is a machine and plays more solid live than anyone Ive ever seen. He's the full package and irreplaceable!

    • @DruMarshallDrums
      @DruMarshallDrums  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very well said and I couldn’t agree more! I should have mentioned his singing + lyrics because that alone is something that separates him even more from other drummers. And good point about the drum machines - sometimes when a drum part is written by a non drummer it really adds a unique flavor because the drum part isn’t part of the same patterns that we’re accustomed to playing. Thanks for watching and for the commentary!

Seen them a few times since and still will never understand how they never ended up filling stadiums. Jerry is definitely a superb drummer, Pleiades is a prime example of amazing groove drumming, if it had been played by John Bonham fanboys would be going apeshit over it to this day......One minor complaint about Jerry and that is-I bloody hate watching him play as he looks really stiff, obviously he isn't but it's just a visual thing.
