  • @ericpeterson7512

    Man he is so me in his playing philosophy. Chris Squire laid down the blueprint all those years ago, and some of the most exciting bassists have taken off with that. Starting with Geddy, and dUg. Everyone from Lemmy, Geezer, Claypool, Sheehan and on and on can trace their sound to Squire and Entwistle. The biamp formula. And I love dUg's use of vibrato. Totally agree--i use vibrato on bass to some extent on most notes, and have for 45 years. Listening to dUg all these years has helped influence my love of eccentricities of tone--those rattling and grinding sustains, controlled fret buzz from low action and vibrato, harmonic overdrive, etc.
    And BTW--you could spend $20,000 on a "Little Manhattan" rig like Entwistle used--or you could go get dUg's pedal for $329. Best single purchase for tone I've ever made in all my years playing bass. Entwistle used a Tech 21 Sans Amp in that monster rig too.

    This cat played on stage with Steve Vai. He sang for Living Colour on one of their tours. He's in a band with George Lynch and Ray Luzier. He's been on stage with Vic Wooten and Eric Gales. He's been a part of many other projects and with all this he's "a small name". I understand what he's saying and he's pretty much right on as far that being the reason for the pricing on his Bass but it's sad. A man who has done the things he's done for music and what he's done for us as fans deserves much more recognition, appreciation, and respect. Swipe Up!

    I'm an older guy who's been playing bass in "difficult" or just unusual music most of the 50 years I've been playing. The last 20 have included a fascinating delve into the Chapman stick, but for the last little while, my jones for that bass vibe has been ascendant - KYG videos taught me a bunch of stuff about setting up the instruments, and now I'm super happy with the basses, and seeking more of that elusive thing that happens when everything under the hands is right. This video resulted in my own research, and I just bought the Tech 21 pedal (instead of the premium Darkglass offerings). I'm sorry to say I didn't know of DUg, or much of that area of music, but I do now. Everything he says about inspiration and what playing bass feels like is spot on, and it's why I'm looking forward to what the sounds will bring out of me.

    • @ericpeterson7512
      @ericpeterson7512 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bro! Same! Bassist for 45 years, and I've been playing the Stick for about 15 years. The tone quest is the quest for the Holy Grail for sure. I fell in love with dUg's tone in the early 90s, and have been trying to emulate it ever since, biamping and running a guitar-like rig for the mid/high like you would for a Stick rig. I could never quite nail it until I found this pedal. It's that 32-band EQ, and some subtle tweaking magic in the low mid. The Chunk control on the pedal is pure voodoo. Now I don't even need to use an amp onstage, even at big venues. This thing and a set of in-ears are all I need, and sound guys regularly compliment my tone. It's perfect for the Stick too! I hope you find that magic under your fingers like I have!

  • @CraigFlowersMusic
    @CraigFlowersMusic ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I was a bassist for many years, and I had the same philosophy of playing around with the beat instead of trying to be gridlocked. And people always said I was great at it, I won tons of awards and accolades etc.. Coincidence? Maybe not. Maybe there IS something to playing behind the beat when it's called for, rushing into a chorus etc. etc. etc. Think about Black Dog for example. When done well, this philosophy glues a band together as a unit.

    Hell yes. I wish more artist treated their signature instruments more like merch, instead of an unobtainable holy grail.
    For the record, my main bass retails for a few grand. It sits right next to various Squiers and other More affordable options. A quality instrument is a quality instrument.
    I can remember a time when a new, “cheap” instrument meant that if you were lucky, you got something unusable. Now “cheap” guitars are expected to take a setup, play easily, and sound good (at least).
    We are living in a Golden Age of musical equipment.
