Shit I just realized. You usually give food when you're introducing yourself to your new neighbors right? So the reason why Kotaro gifted a tissue box because he still considered that as food. Oh my fucking gosh.

Ikr, I only know that a few anime shows characters gifting their new neighbours some sort of biscuits or form of food to show their friendliness and cooperation in being good neighbours to each other, so Kotaro giving the food hit me hard with confusion and acceptance.
Confusion to why is he giving this when it's usually food being given.
Acceptance to thinking that the culture introductory has changed, and that its more useful than food (no hate to food, tissues are versatile in nature though as houseware appliance)
Anyways, the neglection is real and hit me hard.

The translation is lacking a little bit.
What he said is “You don’t have to worry about eating tissue anymore, so it doesn’t need to be sweet”
Then Kotaro replied “I see” or “So it’s like that”. Means he understood karino’s kind gesture of saying, you got me now.

    • @xchrysantha
      @xchrysantha ปีที่แล้ว +10

It's almost also left for interpretation, as is a lot of things in Japanese since it is a high-context culture. Directly the implication is, "Oh yeah you're right, I guess I don't have to eat the tissues anymore," and the subtext to it is, "Oh yeah you're right, I guess I'm not alone anymore." There's a lot at play psychologically as well as verbally lol. And that's why the translation is the way it is - we don't really have that in English, so it's extremely hard to convey in just a translation. If you know Japanese, it feels extremely lacking; but if you don't, it's definitely a best-effort attempt.

My mum and dad grew up eating salt and rice because that was all they could afford. We were still poor when I was born but they never let me see that. Even as a child I knew to not ask for things from them, because I knew they'd feel bad about not being able to buy it. If I would get a candy from anyone I'd divide it in multiple parts and eat the small pieces each alternative day, making it last a week. No they never told me "we don't have money so we can't buy you this" but even as a kid it's something you pick up, kids are smarter than we think.
Once a neighbour gave me one big mango to eat by myself. I was used to eating very tiny, very small pieces. So I was very happy. I accidentally dropped it on the ground because it was too big for my hands but I picked it up and started eating it regardless of the dirt. Because I didn't know the next time I would get to taste one. My mom saw this and slapped my hand and cried. Later on dad brought mangoes home.
We are not poor anymore, heck my parents worked so hard we live in a pretty well-off area and my younger sister goes to an expensive private school. Still I can't find myself being able to ask my parents for things, even if they are important, because the habit of not spending unless it's vital for living will probably never leave me. But I'm thankful that at least I didn't have to eat tissues. I went to bed on a full stomach. I'm very grateful.

I can't believe that there's an anime like this that makes me remember my childhood where I also ate tissues, but not alone. because I used to live in an orphanage, and I ate tissue with my friends when we get hungry since we don't have any sponsors, only those who have sponsors have the chance to eat good food, cookies, biscuits w/ fillings, and good looking pastries. while us the unfortunate ones, the only time that we could have good snacks is when those who have sponsors shares their snacks, or when we steal it and eat it in the middle of night so no one could see us or hear us, cause they're all asleep. we also have a favorite brand of tissue i don't remember the exact way to spell it but it's like this "kleenex" and the color of it's box is pink with navy blue linings.

It is a strange habit in my family and I do not know if it is for this reason but before I was born my family did not have much money, so when my older brothers were small they used to always divide the food no matter how little it was, the point is that everyone could eat something, and I have realized that I have that habit even without realizing it, no matter if the food is a lot the division is always small, I guess it is a bad habit.

I unfortunately would do this too because my step monster would take away my dinner. I would binge eat when I could at school and try to eat my less than edible breakfast he made my sister and I. I would eat notebook paper and tissues. I would swallow large amounts of gum as well because I was so desperate.

As someone who is somewhat ignorant about the subject of kids eating tissues. So as far as I can tell it seems like its a real thing. Why is it that tissue is the chosen object to be consumed?

I recommend you watch it, but if you want the summary of what happened:
      Spoilers
Kotaro was neglected by his parents, his mother got post partum depression (already passed away) and his father is abusive. The series take place when he is living alone in an apartment while getting away from his father (i assume his father is trying to get Kotaro to retrieve the inheritance/insurance left by his mother). He starved a lot when he was with his family, cause his father is rarely there (also abusive to the mother and to Kotaro after she passed away) and his mother can’t stand being near kotaro (She even wear plastic gloves when handling him, but she does still tend to him from time to time). Currently he is living pretty well off on his own (from the insurance money) with peculiar but kind neighbors.

it's a series about a kid who was so neglected he had to move out on his own and everyone in the apartments take turns caring for him. at least that's what ive heard/seen, ive only watched a few scenes when my dad has it on.

I haven’t watched this yet so I don’t really get it. Shin finds out Kotaro eats tissues so he buys him a whole bunch of tissue boxes for Kotaro?? Or is he just having Kotaro buy those and then Shin is going to make him food

    • @introvertspeaks

I think it's the latter. Telling him not to mind about the ingredients because someone (meaning Karino) will be making him food so he will no longer need tasty/sweet tissues.
