  • My new 600mm F4 FL lens is amazing and I have learned a number of things about it since taking it out and capturing images with it. There is a reason that the 600mm focal length is fantastic for wildlife but I learned that I don't always need the extra reach that a crop sensor camera provides.
If you haven't seen my video about focal length, aperture and background blur with full frame cameras and cropped sensor cameras, I highly recommend checking it out: • Full Frame Lenses on C...

Full Frame Lenses on C...
• Full Frame Lenses on C...

I used my 200-400 on a d850 , and cropping in was easier than crop sensors ,without the quality loss

And now the added reach of the Z 600mm f4 TC VR. Enjoy. I've had mine for 4 years (love it) but might sell it as I think about accommodating the Z9 with glass. There is not enough weight reduction in the new 600 to make it a serious consideration. That said, the AF speed and weight distribution (along with a built in TC) make it very tempting...but will have to sell off significant amounts of other glass.

The built in TC for the new Z 600mm F4 makes it a whole different lens. That is the big appeal to me of the new lens. However, it isn't something that will be in my camera bag soon because, like you, I would have to sell quite a bit to be able to get one. Let know you if you decide to take the plunge.

@@thephotographytoolkit Will do. David, I think the question might be how soon, as opposed to if, but I want to decompress this one (as it is a big decision - and I love the 600mm f4 E FL ED VR. I will let you know if i go that route. Discussing selling the D850, D500, 200mm f2, 600mm f4 and some zooms for the new Z 600mm TC - but I have to put it on paper and decide if it's something I can live with (decision). As an active amateur, it's a want, not a need.

@@dance2jam I understand that it is more of a case of when not if for the new Z 600mm f4 TC VR. All that gear you mentioned would be too steep of a price to pay for me. I have the D850, D500 but not the 200mm f2. Maybe I am too sentimental and I just can't let go of gear like the D850 and D500 ;)

@@thephotographytoolkit Oh, I completely understand not wanting to let go of gear. The 200mm f2 was on a month trial to buy, and it's a great lens for outdoor portraits, small children, or indoor sports. That said, it is very front heavy and relatively expensive (even used) and while "fantastic" in speed of AF and might be a "Bokeh King" at that focal length, if you don't do or shoot that kind of work all the time, it's an expensive once-in-a-while lens. It is magical. With respect to the D850/D500 (two cameras I love)...I have barely touched either of them since moving over to the Z9. For me, moving to the Z9 has made life more efficient, given me options I didn't have before, and with WYSIWYG EVF, pre-capture, program button flexibility, silent shooting, high frame rates, sensor shield, IBIS, in camera VR etc. I now do things I rarely did on DSLRs (i.e. change WB with my own Kelvin settings (you see the change in the EVF). You see DOF in the EVF. Ambient light with flash use in the EVF. I went back to the DSLR recently when I was testing out Kelvin settings and shooting my girlfriend with the 200mm f2 (testing the lens as well). Working with the DSLR reminded me of how efficient the Z9 made things. Being restricted on the focus point location was annoying. It was during that shoot this past week, that I realized I'd likely not pick up the DSLRs (as much as I love them) much in the future. I completely understand why you say what you do, and the reason I am leaving this long comment, is that I'm excited for your 600mm dream lens - and it's fabulous. If you get the chance to test out a Z9 for a bit (more than a day) you may change your mind. The learning curve is steep and there are many features that you'll use that you didn't think to use on DSLRs. That said, go enjoy. Continue to share your images and videos. I'm excited to enjoy the ride with you again.

@@dance2jam Thanks so much for sharing. I also love the Z9. It is the camera that I use every day now. And you are totally right with everything you said. It is really hard to go back to not having focus points that cover the entire frame. I have used my D850 a few times since getting the Z9 but most of the time it is just to create some comparisons to the Z9. Where I see myself using the D850 and D500 is when I am using multiple cameras with their own lenses for sports. But other than that, my kids might get the opportunity to use them ;) Thanks again for sharing.

Hi suggest trying a DotSight on your hot shoe for long lenses.
