Though Kevin doesn't take a solo lead in this, the fact that he is singing the whole time lets them do more complex chords with more tension and release. The way Matt and Mitch bend their vocal tone to Match in their duets gives an eerie one voice two notes effect. Their near-neutral facial expressions that shift to fear, anger, despair (and a little hope), and the extreme close-ups show it all. This one hits hard.
Yes!! I have been in love with this song since the 80s when Tears for Fears released the original, then when Gary Jules covered it I loved that even better. And now, well, we already know that Ptx does upgrades! It just blows me away. That wall of sound toward the end gave me a religious experience!
This is a perfect song for their style of singing, especially Scott's passion. The blend of Matt and Mitch is just auditory perfection. I love hearing Mitch let rip with the high notes as much as the next person, but his lower register is just as stunning... it resonates somewhere deep inside, I just love to hear it.
This was made during the lockdown here in the states. It's amazing what they accomplished during lockdown. Check out their cover of Billie Eilish's When The Party's Over, or their rapping cover of "Cant Hold Us". You'll love the concept!!!
I've really enjoyed tho whole At Home EP Pentatonix recorded when they had to stay, well, at home because of the pandemic situation. Blinded by the Light and When the Party's Over are the ones I listen to the most. I understand if it's a bit too polished for your taste, but it's extra impressive, because they had to arrange it remotely and then do their own sound, light and make-up for the recordings. It's when you go:"doing virtual choirs if fun if you can't sing with other people live, but you always end up looking and sounding like an idiot" and then Pentatonix goes:"Hold our five glasses of Perrier". I suppose it helps that they have proper mics and lighting instead of whatever crap you had at home, but still... Looks and sounds really good!
Great reaction. I love their version of this song. What you said makes total sense, they are known for their twists and turns and then hitting you with their signature PTX wall of sound! And we always come back for more! I'm so sorry things have been so difficult lately for you and your family, I really do hope things improve for the better soon.
Thanks for your great reaction! This one hits hard, it's an absolute fav of mine, the harmonies are out of this world, haunting and beautiful.. Mitch and Matt (Match) harmonizing and the shadows in the background, Mitch staring directly into your soul and Kirstie's painful facial expression at the end.. it's a masterpiece!
This was the perfect Covid Pandemic song. The did it during the summer of 2020. They released it after the Home EP also known as the lockdown EP. Just haunting. One of their best arrangements. The way they use silence between the voices and notes, or going from layers of voices to a single voice to finish a line is just devastatingly beautiful.
❤️ this arrangement. And thanks for posting- having a bad pain night, and can’t sleep. I appreciate your posts! ETA: Consider checking out their cover of Take on Me. There is no video for it - just audio. And it’s a full display of Mitch’s insanely huge range.

@@beverlykrebs4372 Thank you. Understanding is always helpful. I also have chronic pain from an issue that can’t be repaired that impact my muscles and nerves. This hits hard now, but when it came out at the height of the pandemic in 2020 it spoke volumes at how different things had become. They did so well at capturing how I felt, and how so many others felt. But... not everything they do is so serious! Try their original song Sing for something a lot more fun and upbeat. You won't be able to get it out of your head.

With songs like this where Kevin is singing the whole time instead of beatboxing, they have the freedom to create full four part 9th chords behind the soloist (which they do a lot in this song). Thanks for your reaction and discussion. Pentatonix performed a wonderful version. Interestingly they are not doing a cover -- it is a cover of a cover. The original song was written and performed by Tears for Fears in 1982. Their version is fast and poppy with sort of a Caribbean beat. Since I was introduced to the song in the slow and haunting version Pentatonix used here, I didn't like their original the first time I heard it. But after listening again several times, I kind of dig it. _Mad World_ was revamped to be the theme song for the 2001 movie, _Donnie Darko._ They left the brilliant lyrics alone, though. The movie plays with your head with different realities, and normal things seem a little off. Abnormal things seem a LOT off. So the slow, haunting style was a perfect match to the movie. Thus Pentatonix was not covering the Tears for Fears original, but the Gary Jules version (who sung it for the movie). At some point, you might consider reacting to the Tears for Fears version. Just look up in TH-cam: Tears for Fears Mad World to watch the official version. (Sometimes when I post links, TH-cam decides the comment belongs in the channel's spam bin.)
I adore your reactions and have missed you tremendously. Another idea for the video? Opaque, with your logo over it. That way we can see the shadow. Other reactors do that. Or type "Copyright YT" over the video.
The AVI-lanche just put out new material today. You definitely have to check his solo music. He's just perfect. Honest to god perfect. Also please react to ptx doing "can't hold us" by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore!!!! My biggest request to all newbies 😉 To see a different side of their talent. Very glad you're back. Really missed your reactions!❤️
Just for a change of pace. Some of their upbeat songs you should check out. Come Along, Happy Now, Can't Sleep Love, Problem, Can't Hold Us and New Rules x Are You That Somebody. A few are originals. Also their Pop Spring 2016 performance (live).
Speaking of Avi... he just dropped his new video about an hour and a half ago. All Is Well ft. Joy Williams. Not to be missed. You can find it at Avi Kaplan official.
I have noticed that the Pentaholics and Home Fries are generally pretty kind people. I'm glad some of them could help you out a bit! Hope there wasn't too much damaged at your mother in laws.
Phenomenal vocal performance. Another amazing cover is by Jadyn Rylee, the instrumentation is perfect and her vocals are great, not this level, but still great. Sorry about everything you have been going through, it really is a mad world.
Welcome back ! I understand about not showing the video, you seem to be one of the reactors they hit the hardest and I appreciate you have not given up completely. Sorry about the fire; I had a couple of childhood experiences with friends losing family in house fires so it's one of my big fears. If you need something to cheer you up a bit try "Happy Now" (their original). And if you want to hear PTX get a bit more country, they did "Jolene", which Dolly volunteered to sing with them. They've also done an Elvis cover -- "Can't Help Falling in Love". And I guess "Shallow" qualifies as country.
You're really growing on me. At first I was like, this dude might even be too weird for me. Which is saying something because I tell my clients constantly that weird is better than normal because normal is boring. But after like all of your PTX videos your weirdness seems fitting 😂

Just look up in TH-cam:

Truly s masterpiece imho
I adore your reactions and have missed you tremendously. Another idea for the video? Opaque, with your logo over it. That way we can see the shadow. Other reactors do that. Or type "Copyright YT" over the video.
I found the original song very haunting. And they just DESTROYED it. It gives me shivers every time I hear it.
My opinion….if I want to see the video….I’d watch the original. I’m here for your reaction. No explanation needed.
Most Pentaholics have already seen the videos multiple times, so not showing the video is not a problem! 🤗💖
Agree with your decision - we have probably all seen the video made than once. Do what works for you - We can still enjoy your reaction ❤️
I find you can feel the pain in each of them during this song
Usually PTX is so fun and boppy. This is such a sad song. It grabs you.
I'm so sorry that you have been having such a rough time lately. May you and your family see new blessings coming up and an end to these miseries.
Y9u say it's not funny...but dude your faces are funny. Had me laughing 🤣🤣. Imo this is the best song since Avi left the group.
Speaking of Avi... he just dropped his new video about an hour and a half ago. All Is Well ft. Joy Williams. Not to be missed. You can find it at Avi Kaplan official.
I saw that on his community page. I’m excited to hear it as well.
I think you would enjoy their cover of Over The River. It is epic!
this song haunts my dreams
So sorry about all the RL stuff. I hope things smooth out for you now. We missed you, it’s good to see you again. 💕
I have noticed that the Pentaholics and Home Fries are generally pretty kind people. I'm glad some of them could help you out a bit! Hope there wasn't too much damaged at your mother in laws.
I really enjoy your reactions
WOW! I hope everything will be okay for your family. That's rough!
Phenomenal vocal performance. Another amazing cover is by Jadyn Rylee, the instrumentation is perfect and her vocals are great, not this level, but still great. Sorry about everything you have been going through, it really is a mad world.
I have all of Jadyn's songs on a playlist & I love her! That girl is gonna be a star!! Her cover of Dream On is my favorite!!!
Like +++++++++++. Awesome. Great to see your numbers up. Keep it up.
This song wrecked me when it was Tears for Fears, but with this arrangement I'm just on the floor in sorrow and amazement!
Go Pats!
You should watch their original called "sing". It's one of my favorite ones and it has fan videos including some big name fans.
I just found this. Didn't get a notification this time. ??? Anyway, missing the Olympics to watch this! You should feel very special! 😉
You're really growing on me. At first I was like, this dude might even be too weird for me. Which is saying something because I tell my clients constantly that weird is better than normal because normal is boring. But after like all of your PTX videos your weirdness seems fitting 😂
Still would love u to check out their live performance of carol of the Bells. It won the vote in the comments of ur video of them on Ellen. I promise it's worth ur time 💖
We've seen the videos. We just want your reaction. This is a great idea.
Dude 🙏🏻🙏🏻
My brother and i are the same age for 5 days, then i go a year older. Love your reactions :)
So hauntingly beautiful 🔥
Have you seen Say Something, cover by PTX? It's amazing!
Omgosh sweetie I’m so sorry about your mother in law’s home! The devil is working overtime to overcome you! God was watching over her & your sweet family! I would LOVE to see you do a reaction with your wife & kiddos! 🥰I love watching family reactions lol Praying for you all for better days💞
