    Pentatonix is grateful and humble. They worked their butts off to make themselves what they are instead of accepting defeat when Epic records dropped them a week after their winning the Sing Off. They deserve their fame and handle it very well.

      @@SauceyDad Epic didn't think A capella music would sell. They had taken their prize money, moved in next-door to each other in the same apartment complex, and spent 400 bucks to make the video for Daft Punk in Avi & Kevin's closet. And then won a Grammy. Subsequently were hired back by the top label of Epic, RCA. They have won two other Grammys since, one for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and one for an A capella recording of Jolene with Dolly Parton. All three videos should be on your list.

    • @ClaireBarn

      what I have never understood is why epic made the contract with the TV show in the first place. If they knew they didn’t want to support a cappella, why support a cappella on TV? I don’t get it.

      @@ClaireBarn exactly! And what about the winners of the first two seasons?

    • @tamarasmith9060
      @tamarasmith9060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@ClaireBarn I think they expected that all a capella groups would only sell in smaller amounts to hardcore a capella fans, only need promoting in places where a capella usually performs, & a capella groups would mostly just be making sound recordings instead of full on video production. In other words a very low cost investment of money & manpower up front which would then make some profit but nothing compared to "real" singing groups in the pop, rock or country realms. The winners of the 1st 2 seasons pretty much still fit that. Then PTX wins & immediately starts talking about how their targeted audience is basically the whole world of pop music. They want to do real tours. Their talent & goal is innovation, bringing a capella to the masses instead of just choir nerds like themselves. For them to do the kind of music they wanted they were going to need much more than the company had thought up front. The company hadn't planned on risking that kind of investment on an a cappella group.

    One thing I have noticed about Pentaholics is we are patient and understanding and love to share the vast knowledge of PTX. There is a reason we gravitate to this group. Aside from being incredibly talented they genuinely care about their fans. They also have a way of bringing out emotions with their music. You have definitely gone down the PTX rabbit hole. We welcome you.

    The reason Pentatonix has such a large following, in my humble opinion, is their diversity. They sound great, look great but it's their ability to draw in a wider group of people who can relate to them that makes them so popular in the a capella world. Daft Punk or 90s Dance Medley next please 👍🏻💕

    Imagine by Pentatonix may be one of the most important videos of this century. This group took a classic song of tolerance and peace and modernized it as only they can. They are a perfect example of what respect and love can be like. Five people with differences in race, religion, gender, and sexuality can do beautiful things when they work together. I cried when I heard this the first time. I still usually tear up when they go into Wall of Sound mode. Unfortunately showing this to Pentaholics is kind of like preaching to the choir with most of us.

    Welcome to the journey of becoming a Pentaholic! Also, if you didn't notice, the cards all had specifics that described whoever was holding the card, but also showed what they had in common with the person they were giving the card to! A simple yet super effective way to show their message. Loved your reaction again, sincerely!

      It takes a lot of chutzpah for any musician to take on the likes of John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, and Simon & Garfunkel. Pentatonix always rises to the occasion and certainly makes those artists-living or not-proud. Like I often say-leave it to Pentatonix to take something perfect and make it even better.

    Some people have already mentioned this, but the cards show both their individual identities and their shared identities. Cards passed between members of the group are things they have in common! This was also Scott's public coming out!

  • @thechomiji
    @thechomiji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    KO'ed by the PTX Wall of Sound! We feel you. I usually tear up when Kirstin turns over her Latina card to reveal "Woman," with that soaring solo, and if you didn't get the point of the cards up until then, it hits like a ton of bricks. Have another slap to add to your slap-itude: this _may_ have been Scott's public coming-out. Mitch arrived in the public eye as an out gay man when they participated in The Sing-Off in 2011 (although the show's producers kept trying to stuff him back into the closet), but his childhood friend Scott was a little more cautious about the whole thing. Then he blew the whole thing wide open when he took that LGBTQ+ card from Mitch in this video.

    Avi Kaplan has made me tear up time and time again. Scott has said that if there was an emotional song, Avi had to have the lead. You will have to see some of his solo projects or collaborations. Peter Hollens has had all three...Tim, Avi and Geoff on his channel.

    • @UserHorologium
      @UserHorologium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter has had Scott on as well. And while the video for "Turn Up the Music" is good (and sometimes amusing) the BtS is absolutely hilarious; Peter, Scott, and Riley and Jimmy from Fifgen Films had a blast making it. (Yes, I know Scott is not a bass like the other three, but I like pushing this video because it doesn't get enough attention.)

  • @katherineeasteal662
    @katherineeasteal662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I love your Avi Attacked and Kevin Kicked etc! Speaking of Avi, he was given a good solo in Hallelujah, but as you were new to Pentatonix it probably passed you by as you probably weren't aware yet that he was the bass as well.
    I agree with you entirely about Kevin's singing voice - especially in this song. Like Avi, it's a shame their specialist positions prevent them from singing solos more.

    Pentatonix paid tribute to John Lennon with starting off following the original then they took it to the PTX upgrade with each one of them masterfully singing then the vocal layering and the PTX signature Wall of Sound. The message cards showed characteristics of the person holding the card then the characteristic they shared with the person they passed it on to. In the end they reminded us that we are all human beings. PTX used their platform well to share this message of inclusivity, diversity and tolerance. You should react to the history of Pentatonix video - about 15 minutes long - tells the story of how they started with Scott and Mitch knowing each other from about age 10 and going through high school with Kirstie, then finding Kevin and Avi a few days before auditioning for the sing off. After Avi left amicably, Kevin joined and they are a family of friends. In 2021 they celebrated their tenth anniversary with an album called The Lucky Ones. The title track is very telling. You should react to the music video as well as some of their originals like Happy Now, Be My Eyes, Coffee in Bed and Anchor (no music video for that one only audio).

    We love Pentatonix for all the reasons you mentioned. They appeal to every age group and fans of every genre. They're so versatile and take on any project from classical music (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) to EDM (Daft Punk medley), and rap (Can't Hold Us, Problem) to every decade of pop and rock. And they do it all with their naked voices. I think that's what gets us in the feels. Just the artistry of human sounds, connecting to human hearts. This song makes me well up, too. For an amazing change of pace, would love to watch you react to the Daft Punk medley. I'm no EDM fan, but their version of highly computerized dance music is riveting. It won them their first Grammy, and Kevin and Avi really get to strut their stuff.

    I have watched this reaction more than any other reaction ever...from no you little magic man to your physical demonstration of heaven falling out of Kevin's mouth (prob my fave comment ever 🤣), and when u put ur hands up like a boxer when Mitch started, followed by u looking upward mouthing "why?", and of course the facial reactions thru the whole video but esp during Mitch's part (esp when ur hands clasped over ur mouth 🤣), loved the little birdie explanation...I definitely think it was ur heart, loved the forgetting to breathe comment (we've all been there), and I love that u accept they make u emotional, sometimes to the point of tears...a lot of men would laugh or joke it off or even delete the video but u talked about it and wanted to figure out how and why they make u feel so deeply. That is a great example to set, esp for boys and young men who may have been taught to hide their emotions. Keep doing you and I'll keep being a fan. Come back soon...miss ur reactions!
    Also, who is Jeff? Is it the creepy clown doll we saw in Hallelujah? Or is it a real person?

    Take breaks whenever ya please. It's about quality not quantity.
    Another righteous reaction here. Btw, even the beastliest among us are defenseless against these heart melting voices. No shame in shedding a tear. Besides, you didn't weep this time anyway so uh....what's wrong with you? Don't answer that.

    Today, 12-8-21, is the 41st anniversary of John Lennon's death. I have no idea if you are old enough to remember this, but I remember it like it just happened today. A very sad day. It's fitting that I am watching it now. PTX made the absolute BEST cover of "Imagine" that I have ever heard.

    One of Lennon's best post Beatles. It's a powerful song with a powerful message. PTX knocked this out of the park. Made me cry from the first time and never fails to make me do so every time I see this video.

    Of all their videos this is the best. The song is so beautifully done but the visuals show how well they understood the heart of the song... and I've seen it well over 100 times heck close to 200 I'm sure; but even so every time they turn over their cards at the end....I tear up.
    And yes they are truly sweet and caring people another part of their success...their genuine love of what they do and of each other and their audiences...

    Believe me when I say that this will not be the second, third or fourth time tears will appear during a PTX video. It happens more times than most of us would like. If you would like to see something upbeat check out their "Daft Punk" medley. That is living proof that hard work, dedication, and $400 can win you a Grammy. If you want more of the my brain went poof, try their original " Run to You" or their cover of "Mad World." Also it is getting to be Christmas time and PTX has an extensive Christmas catalog which includes "Over the River" which they just dropped this past week.

    What they do to a song when they sing it is fantastic. They don't change the words or the basic tune, they put their feelings and their hearts into it and let it flow out and touch our hearts and feelings and create a unique way to touch hearts. I love them. I love watching your reactions. You let your feelings show.

    That last super-choral section is explosive, eh?? 😏
    Avi ("ah-vee) is wonderful. Listen to them sing "Light in the Hallway" or Avi in "Black is the Color" with Peter Hollens.
    "Run to You" is an original that is equally gorgeous!!

    Pentaholics are a very passionate fanbase and will grow your channel exponentially if they like your reactions. However beware of getting burned out. There's a pool of emotion and you don't want it running dry. Take time when you need it; we'll understand. Cheers!
    Edit 1: Avi's voice is just so expressive and beautiful and warm. He has an incredible (5-octaves?) range and sounds like a vocal hug. I call it getting Avi-lanched.
    Edit 2: That part at the end where they're all harmonizing and blowing you away is what we affectionately call the "wall of sound" and they use it quite often and it makes you forget that there are no instruments in this group, only voices.
    Edit 3: Pentatonix is very generous of its fans. I think it's probably because of how they started. They got dropped from their record contract two weeks after The Sing-Off because the label didn't think that acapella could be mainstream. So they started releasing videos on TH-cam and grew their fan base that way. And even though most of them have done solo work, when they are with each other, they all work in the service of the song. If you notice when they are all harmonizing together, even though you can pick out each individual voice, you will not hear any of them try to stand higher than the others unless it is called for. I noticed it first on Hallelujah so I may have to go back to that video and comment there so you can see what I mean.
    Edit 4 (last, I promise): Tears are not a bad thing. They are a reasonable response to music that moves you, and this music obviously moves you. You will not be the first to be brought to tears by some of these songs. And as for your "man card," you get a pass for Pentatonix songs. I remember one reactor who was following suggestions to more and more moving songs, until at one point he said, "okay now you're just _trying_ to make me cry." Yep. And it worked. You're also not the first one to get up and walk away in the middle of a song. I love your reactions. Mostly because it reminds me of how I felt when I first heard these songs. It's kind of a vicarious first-time listen. Keep doing what you do and I'll keep watching. I have subscribed and I look forward to what you'll do next! Cheers!
