    I love how PTX takes a song like Gold, which is digitally spliced and diced to within an inch of its life, and then they just chill on a couch and come out with this! Ridiculous. And amazing.

    Not only is this performance insane- it’s done in one take! Yes, an ‘arrangement’ is essentially a roadmap of who sings what, when. Notes, timing/time changes, dynamics, lyrics, chords, what key it’s in are all part of an arrangement. I minored in vocal music in college and PTX’s arrangements are ridiculously difficult and there’s’ no instrumental music in the background to cover if one of these 5 people makes a mistake. Sometimes I try to follow one persons part from start to finish and inevitably get lost multiple times and then Google to find the sheet music-lol. PTX is Olympic level arranging and performing and they make it look effortless. They are stupid talented.

    Yes, you understand arrangements pretty well. In this case, they had to design the vocals that would create the sampled sounds in Kiiara's version, plus they like to add PTXisms like Avi's bass drop. The little harmonic changes Kirstie and Scott added in were beautiful, too. The harmonies just rang like bells for me. I LOVE "Gold"

      The "arrangements"are what Pentatonix does best. Seriously.. every one of them including Matt when he came into the group, are incredibly talented...we are all very aware of that from the moment they open their mouths, individually and collectively. BUT.. it's the arrangement of the songs that turn them into a Pentatonix masterpiece rather than just a cover of someone else's song. They have a way of paying homage to the original while making an older song, be it a "classic" song from 50 years ago or a new song that's on the charts right now, new and exciting. You can listen to it over and over and hear something new each time, while appreciating each individual group member's contribution to the performance. That's what makes them special. I've been a musician for almost 50 years. I have seen A LOT of really incredibly talented and amazing performers, groups and bands. I am constantly amazed at how this group continues to surprise me... Just when I think I've heard their best...here comes another song, performance, video, whatever, that I'll say.. ".. ok, now THAT one was the best I've heard. That song IS their BEST!.." And then they go off and do it again, raising the bar higher and higher each flippin' time.... Lol. I pray they keep on surprising me with more of their "best" songs. After all... When it comes to the best, there is no limit and PTX has proven that over and over again. Can't wait to hear what's next. Seeing them in concert is on my bucket list. I live in the Dallas Ft Worth area not far from where Scott, Mitch and Kirstin are from. I keep thinking they will come "home" soon and do a concert in the DFW area, so maybe I'll get my chance to see them in the near future. Love you Saucy Dad. Keep up the good work and fun times.

    Oh, Saucey Dad!! Thank you for doing this one!! Remember that the original not only has instruments but it is synthesized. This is Pure Pentatonix Perfection and Precision - all five of them - really. Avi so deep, Scott with the pop riffing, Kirstie with the sweet notes, Kevin on the percussion and those whooshing sounds. But.....honestly.....Mitch.....honestly..... the vocal acrobatics, the note changes, the octave climbs, the vocal slides, the tone like dripping caramel - whatever goes on with his vocal cords is astounding! Then his eyes are closed not even seeing what the others are doing, 100% focus, his fingers snapping, making this look as easy as 1,2,3. Mitchell Grassi will go down in history as one of the greatest vocal talents of all time. One definition of musical arrangement is "a piece of music that has been adapted for performance by a particular set of voices or instruments" so you have it right as it includes who will sing or sound, or which instrument will play what at which place in the song. While we are on definitions, the definition of A Capella is "without instrumental accompaniment" but I think Pentatonix has redefined this because they ARE the instruments. You heard Mitch do the electric guitar, you heard Kevin do drums and cymbals, you heard Avi do bass guitar. There are lots of other instruments they do but you still have over 170 PTX songs to react to so keep listening. "No"is on the list I sent to you - recorded for sure and then the live for sheer entertainment value. Jolene is Grammy #3 for PTX, and performed with Dolly Parton herself. I am on this journey with you......so much more fun to come. BTW they have been writing, so expect some new music, and at Christmas time you have all their Christmas songs to do!!!

    This video is the one I point to when I tell people about how tight Avi and Kevin are in their performances. As a matter of fact I drive my wife pretty close to nuts telling her this fact every time I see this video. Lol. But, that little bit between the two of them... I'm sure you heard how Kevin would hit a beat and a quarter second, or so, behind him Avi would come in and fill out that bass drop on the beat. Then Avi would do some insane bass sliding and Kevin would pick up directly afterward. Absolutely amazing. And, they are not the only ones who do this, either, though they were the first I noticed it with. Geoff and Lane do it, and so do Adam and Tim.

    On covers, it is how they arrange the song that fits them and them being a capalla as opposed to the original. On originals how they build the song from the ground up to suit them. Like in this one, the original had a lot of electronic sounds to make it sound like this. And since that is Mitch's forte, of course they would pick him to make those sounds without needing computers. If you watch their last upload to their channel, the making of their Evergreen album, you will see a lot of their arranging and how they do it. Oh and it the highest tier patrons. Jolene won them their 3rd grammy.

  • @maryanderson5443

    Let’s make it simple…close your eyes, take you finger and point to any of PTX songs and you’ll have a winner! They are perfectionists and never slop it up. Havana, any of their originals, Run To You, Say Something, Bohemian Rhapsody will definitely blow your mind! BTW, PTX does not cover songs, they upgrade songs.

    Yes, sir... the arrangement is who sings what, when. One of the most impressive parts to this arrangement is Kirstie's harmony part. It's very difficult, and she nails it. Love this. Great song, great reaction.

  • @chrisabel1833
    @chrisabel1833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    At its lowest level, an arrangement is the art of placing notes in time. Chords are groups of notes sung (or played) together, normally supporting a melodic line.
    When you have vocal artists like PTX, they can pretty much do anything they want. You want to hear electronic style music? Sure, Daft Punk (Grammy #1) and Love Again. Oh, it's only instruments? Arrange Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker. Grammy #2. You want to hear traditional and not so traditional Christmas tunes? Sure, six or more albums worth. Country? Compare their version of Jolene (Grammy #3) to Dolly's original. It's different, but the original sentiment and feel is there.

  • @amyvernon3862
    @amyvernon3862 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Saucey Dad, you are correct with your arrangement assessment. It's how each part is laid out and how it combines with the others, including harmonies/beats/bass/ect. For example, the star spangled banner, each artist/group that does it and changes the melody/harmony/instrumentals/pauses/phrasing in the song, is making their own arrangement.

Half the genius of Pentatonix is their arrangements. I call it purposefully complex; no wasted opportunities and not complex for the sake of complexity. So basically, it's all aspects of composition.

  • @davidwiger6024
    @davidwiger6024 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You've basically got it right. The arrangement for a song is setting the parts that each instrument will play, speed, timing, starting octave(s) and/or change ups. In The Sing Off competition Shawn Stockman named Avi and Kevin Meat and Potatoes because "as talented as the three of you are (referring to Scott, Mitch, & Kirstin) it's those two that ...". Basically the beat boxer and bass set the tempo for a song and fill in the bottom of the song to set a solid foundation for the other performers to work off of.
    It may be time for you to react to Pentatonix in Season three of The Sing Off and Home Free / Voiceplay in Season 4. If your interested, Peter Hollens pulled together a group of singers from his college called "On the Rocks" and Adam Chance from Home Free competed with the group "Street Corner Symphony" in season 2.

    Great reaction! New sub here. The reason the list of Patreons isn’t longer is because that level of support is Sold Out. So is the personalized message level. No shock there!! 😉

    Yes, they also write out sheet music for each song. Though I do wonder what Kevin's notations look like!

      Avi and Kevin wrote that one. There is a full interview about it with a performance off 🎤 except for Kevin who is doing throat bass which is very potentially difficult and vocally destroying (why you need a verbal bass to avoid that).

    Yes - you close your eyes and pick any of their sounds and be blown away with how good they are. Jolene is awesome! Won them another Grammy. ♥️

    There is an interview with Ben Bram on Jacob Restituto's YT channel which you might be interested in to hear more about the arranging process.
    Ben is the '6th member' of PTX and has been with them from the start, he arranges with them, and won alongside them on their Grammys for arrangements.
    If you watch the Evergreen behind the scenes (please!) mini-documentary on their YT channel you will see him working with them.
    Oh! There are also Evergreen tour behind the scenes for each show they did on their 2021 Christmas show, but they might just be on Instagram. The YT fan channel PTXWeeklyNews might have uploads of them though. They are fun, and very short, you could probably do a few at a time.

  • @zrebbesh

    I believe most of their songs are arranged by Kevin, who is insanely talented in many ways. Other groups hear PTX and say 'Oh, we should sing it that way...' and then of course, they can't. I don't think we'll ever hear a different band performing a song with an arrangement this crazy hard.

  • @ellenhofrath
    @ellenhofrath 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can see an arrangement like setting up a table. You have some things slready: the table, chairs, dishes... that is the original song. Then you put it together, add some flowers here, put a cushion on the chair here.. that's the personal impact to it. At least you push, pull, arrange till you're happy with the result.

    The first step to arranging is to take the original song and decide how they want to change it. Then they assign parts.
