Hi Jack , great video. Like you say Teenage Fanclub really getting into as of late , Bandwagonesque fantastic. And remember having World Party 's debut on cassette when first released. I have the same feeling with Latin Quarter. Their albums deserved more recognition at the time , love particularly Modern Times, and Mick and Caroline. 😍🎵🎵🤘
Many thanks Peter! World Party are fairly new to me. I read about them about a year ago in Mojo and was keen to check them out. Never heard of Latin Quarter before. Sounds like they had a real mix of influences. I'll give them a listen.
wow, I'm looking forward to hearing the music you've created. This was an interesting list of bands. A few of them I'm familiar with, but I had not heard of more than half of them. Lots to dig into when I have time. lol Lots of great covers; my top 3 favorite album jackets from the ones you showed: 1)Teenage Fanclub 2)Dehd 3)Bright Phoebus. Great idea for a video - I enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and commenting, Randall. The problem I've found with the VC is that you get so many good recommendations for new music, but there just isn't enough time to explore it all! I love that Bright Phoebus cover... it's so representative of the music. Cheers, Jack
@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf You're exactly right. With so many recommendations from other VC people there is no way to hear everything I'd like to hear. But someday....
Many thanks, Bobby! Did you get the Guerssen reissue? I think the band tweaked the sequence of the songs to how they originally wanted it. I'm going to get the follow up album too. Can't go wrong with Moby Grape! Cheers, Jack
TH-cam algorithm worked for once and suggested this video...subbed a few minutes in 🙂 Already knew Ride and Teenage Fanclub but you prompted me to dig into Shack and Moby Grape. It's an endless list of course but a few other bands that sprang to mind who have a loyal following but should have "been bigger" are The Creation (spot the Ride connection there), Kaleidoscope (UK), The Chameleons and Acetone.
Many thanks for watching and the sub! I love The Creation… really need to get some of their stuff on vinyl. Yep, Ride did that great Cover of How Does It Feel To Feel. I’ve read great things about Acetone, but haven’t listened to them… think some of their albums were reissued recently, which would you recommend? Hope you liked Shack and Moby Grape! Cheers, Jack
Great topic Jack, loved it! I always thought my first favourite band, The Motors, should have been a lot bigger than they were. Three albums, one big hit, a string of misses, then oblivion. A few of the bands you showed I have connections with - I've got the first album (on CD) by The Silver Jews but it was a bit downbeat for me though I should give it another go. The Tindersticks would maybe be a British equivalent? I have a 'Best of Moby Grape' album on vinyl (bought in Holland), but it turns out it's just a reissue of that debut LP, great stuff. I still haven't got to Shack. I have a best-of Martin Carthy CD which I always dig out in the autumn, and I saw him live in Manchester back in the day. I've done videos on both World Party (RIP Karl) and the Fannies. Looking forward to your big number! Cheers.
Many thanks, James! The Silver Jews probably aren't for everyone. I don't think I've heard their first album though. American Water, Bright Flight and Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea are brilliant. Moby Grape's first is by far the best, though Wow and Moby Grape '69 are great albums too. You can't beat the Fannies... just a brilliantly consistent band. I'm away to check out your video. My big number will probably be released mid-December. Then I'm going into hiding over Christmas. Cheers for watching!
Hi Mike, it is such a great album and it's surprising that not many people seem to know about it. I never seem to read about it in magazines or online. Just one of these albums that seems to have a bit of a cult following. I think if the legal disputes were sorted and it got a proper vinyl reissue it would raise its profile. I've also got The Waterson's Frost & Fire: A Calendar Of Ritual And Magical Songs, which is more traditional with only the Watersons; voices. Not my thing so much. Earlier in the year, I passed on a few Martin Carthy solo albums and I'm kicking myself now. Cheers, Jack
Enjoyed the video and the subject of this one although saying that how big a band is is subjective, I'm also getting some new bands to listen to ..keep up the good work
A great topic for a video, Jack. Let the debate begin! We are on the same page with Ride: Going Blank Again is excellent (as is the first EP and Nowhere). Shack is new to me, but I need to take out a home equity loan for a new driveway next year! So, Shack will have to wait 😆 Teenage Fanclub is a band that passed me by back in the day. That Tigers Blood/Katie Crutchfield looks interesting to me. Looking forward to hearing your music, Jack. 😎🎶
Hey Mark, I think I read that before. I think I also read that he was writing liner notes for various psych reissues. I've never read Shindig, but it always looks a good read. I've pretty much stuck with Mojo since the early issues. I'll need to give it a read and maybe switch my subscription for a bit. Thanks for watching pal!
Good idea for a video Jack - I gave up on the top 25 acts one as it was either too predictable or too deliberately controversial! Your idea is far better - can’t argue with World Party , Ride (although they have gone on to gain a lot of popularity in later years ) , great to see another Shack mention on the VC (ta for the shout out!) we are keeping the flag flying ! And 100% agree on the Fannies !! Grand Prix and Northern Britain are classics without a doubt ❤ Not heard of some of the others so shall keep an eye out for them - may I suggest World of Twist to the forgotten band’s should been contenders pile !!
I fancied doing the 25 Best US/UK bands, but like you say, once a few people do it, it gets a bit samey. I'll do it in a few months! I didn't really listen to World of Twist at the time, I'll need to go back and give them a go.
@ they are a bit Pulp meets madchester - I might do a follow up to your video as I thought of about another 10 bands tonight that should have been massive- let’s see if the Shack two can start a movement ! Stay well 👍🫡
I went to see Ride on that tour at Poole Arts Centre i remember it well as it was my 21st Birthday. Some kid at the bar commented on my Husker Du T-shirt, sold me his fanzine & said he was in a band called The Jennifers that were going to be huge. I rolled my eyes & had a good chat with him...3 years later I was watching Top Of The Pops & I recognised the same kid playing drums for Supergrass ..it was Danny!!..then he dated Kate Moss...meanwhile I've carved out a career in Insurance! 🤣
Great story Harris and a memorable 21st! I've been to Poole once, when I was at Blandford for a training course. Unfortunately, I didn't do anything as exciting as watching Ride or meeting Danny! I bet Danny dreams of the stability of a solid career like insurance!
Hey Andy! I wasn't really aware of Dehd until I heard blue Skies. I think they've put another one out since then. I hope my big music release doesn't disappoint... put my heart and soul into it! Cheers, Jack
@ Yep, most recent album is entitled Poetry. They are touring the UK in 2025, although the only Scottish date is Glasgow so maybe a tad too for you, unless you are an Uber fan of course. Andy
Agree with Shack, great band. Michael Head is playing a few solo shows at the moment. Saw the Silver Jews a few times too mostly at festivals, again really good. A couple of my bands that should have been bigger IMO - Icicle Works, Balaam and the Angel and Kings X
Hey Rob, think I missed Mick Head when he played in Glasgow. His new solo album is great too. Would loved to have seen the Silver Jews. Dave Berman was a unique talent. Icicle Works are a fantastic band... you can pick up their albums pretty cheaply. Haven't heard Balaam and the Angel or Kings X before.
Sweet choices.I saw Icicle Works and Waterboys play a few times , Sharrock , Wallinger so young...and still think they should have been bigger.Even though Whole Of The Moon is a standard.I saw The Alarm too and they were so powerful live, around 1985 or 6. The Sandkings should have been bigger too.
I've never heard of the Sandkings... need to check them out. Would liked to have seen the Icicle Works live. Like you say, a very underrated band. I always forget that Karl Wallinger was in the Waterboys. A very talented guy. Cheers for watching pal, Jack
Silver Jews are criminally underrated imho So many great tunes. American Water is in my top 10 lps for sure. I didn't stop playing that album for months, Literally months. Ride are mint too, but not as under the radar as SJ. Cheers!.
I always think of Teenage Fanclub as being pretty big, but that might just be because everyone I know really likes them... at least for the Bandwagonesque, Thirteen, Grand Prix, period. They did start to drop off a bit in the late 90's though for my tastes. ... and I found the last few albums really disappointing, especially 'here' from 2016, which is a pretty boring listen to my ears with unmemorable songs.
Hey Rocket! I know what you mean... they were probably the biggest band I showed, but I think they should have been bigger than they were. Especially around Bandwagonesque and Grand Prix. I saw them when they toured Here, so I quite like that album. I know what you mean though, there aren't really any stand out songs on that album. Cheers for watching and commenting, Jack
Thanks for the intro to Bronco Bullfrog. Totally missed them too. 👍😍🤘
Glad you enjoyed them! An easy band to like.

A brilliant topic, Jack! Looking forward to seeing who you shine a much-deserved spotlight on 👍

Cheers Christian! No one too obscure, probably more bands that didn't hit the heights that they maybe deserved. In my humble opinion, of course 🙂
I’m looking forward to watching it when work is done for the day 😊
Best wishes,

Great picks. Loved World Party, especially 'Egyptology'.
Many thanks! Been really enjoying it over the last few days... full of great songwriting.

Im gonna pick 2 bands I hope will be bigger than they are now
Sheer Mag from Philadelphia and
Thus Love from Vermont
