I'm glad you didn't edit out Big Mad Liene. 😁 I haven't read that book, but I can slim my TBR a little now. I definitely had the FOMO back when everyone hyped it.
Liene.......... you really ARE the best, chuck out the rest. This was awesome. Also, you convinced me to pick up the rest of red rising saga lol. nice work.
I love that you just start the vid with just a stack of books in your lap haha. This was interesting, and edit of all the books you read and a recap of each. Very entertaining as always. I was just thinking yesterday, Wheel of time season 3 will be coming, I hope Lienne does a review so I can watch the show haha
I also have been very meh on SMG. I feel the same about her as I do about VE Schwab. The book blurbs always sounds really cool and its always so disappointing. Also recommending Dogs of War or Elder race for Tchaikovsky! But then again, I enjoyed bone shard daughter, but I am that person who doesn't think about what they're reading for more than 2 seconds 😅
@@LienesLibrary For your complain of Wall-E, i rationalize that as "cache memory" that was store on another component and comes back with the electricity of the "kiss", maybe it can help your enjoyment of that
I love that you have standards, and the education to inform them! But as I watch the wrap-ups where you go through a lot of books, I am left wondering; "Why so many current books?" I mean, we are **living** in the age of the artificial trilogy padded with YA froth that should have been a single novela. When you hit older books, (like "Lud in the Mist") from a time when writers had to be literate, you seem to enjoy them. The market isn't going to change, so why don't you look at someplace else? Like perhaps 70s or 80s fantasy? Or George MacDonald? or Dunsany? Moorcock's "Warhound and the World's Pain?" I'm not trying to be weird, genuinely curious. It's not just that it's harder to find a foil stamped die cut cover from then, is it?
Yes! I had to reread the action sequence chapters of watchmaker a few times to grasp what happened. Bedlam stacks has a cameo appearance by Morí but that’s all. I adored bedlam stacks.
I was wondering. I heard the concept of bone ships and i went isn’t this just one step over from liveship traders in terms of world building? Then i saw hobb had reviewed it and i was wondering is it actually different or are people praising the world building as creative when it’s very similar?
Aww, I was really hoping for a rant review of Illborn, but I don't blame you for DNF'ing the prologue. I actually liked the prologue, bad writing notwithstanding, but you are right the entire book is like that. I trudged through about 20%. Derivative world building, sexist, and some of the worst dialogue I've ever read. However, loved your rant review of The Boneshard Daughter. I didn't hate it that much, but it's definitely one of the most overpraised fantasy books out there and I don't think I'll read another book by the author. I heard she got an agent and her first book wasn't picked up by a publisher and then wrote 1-2 more books and then finally sold The Boneshard Daughter as her debut, with a huge book deal (6 figures maybe?). And that book was so mid, I was left very unimpressed. I'm kind of tired of magic systems with lots of rules. I know you don't love Sanderson, but I think he's the only one that can make these types of magic systems interesting, and even he isn't perfect at it. If you can't do it well, just let the magic remain more mysterious. It will work better for 90% of the fantasy books out there. And lastly I'll mention, I'm always surprised how much you love the Red Rising Saga. We tend to agree more on books we dislike than like, but it's a series I want to like but find exhausting. For some reason, I can't connect with the characters and don't find Darrow an interesting character. If I had to guess books you wouldn't like, Red Rising would be one of them. That said I did enjoy Golden Sun and Morning Star, but haven't enjoyed this new series much at all.
I get why Pierce Brown’s style isn’t for everyone but I do enjoy the epic and melodramatic Shakespearean drama tone of the whole thing, even when I find it to be a tad overwritten I’m still mostly enjoying it
As an HG Parry fan and a Peter Pan connoisseur, I feel like you’re obligated to give Parry’s Peter Pan novella a shot.👀 As per usual, you hate like 50% of your own picks.😭
Thank you so much for your comments on Emily Wilde - you gave me a lot to think about! I did not go into that book with a critical eye at all for probably the exact reason you said, that it’s pitched as cozy. Now hearing you talk about it I’m like, *did* I ever like that book? Because ya, I didn’t like the autism rep and the romance was so boring & unbelievable…but I think I was like ya sure, cozy fairies, whatever lol. But the changeling thing - I did not know that history & im so glad you shared because now I can be angry with you.
I love most of Tchaikovsky's stuff that I've read, but I agree with a lot of what you said about The Tiger and the Wolf. The worldbuilding was imaginative in places, and his prose is always competent, but it's too long-winded and becomes tedious, and the characters aren't compelling. And I agree on the noble savages archetype, it's all a bit reductive and tropey. Hence the John Gwynne praise...
I love your rage over Bone shard daughter. I have never been interested in reading it, but now I'm kinda tempted to borrow it from the library to see just how bad it is and how many pages I can stomach before it gets forcefully returned through the returns slot 🤣 Emily Wilde's... yeah, it was not great. Read, immediately sold, no intention to continue. I don't get the love. The idea of allowing a man academic to steal a woman's research pissed me off. Allowing him to horn in and take most of the credit, and the message that it was only with a "charismatic" man would the research be accepted, pissed me off even more. (Maybe this aspect was amplified as my worst part because of my history as a science academic). The relationship felt forced. And the story in general was boring as shit. And this is before we get to the fae part. Oh, yeah, that excerpt from Illborn definitely sounds like a school assignment. Probably no more than B grade.
@@megravitt33 spoilers for bone shard daughter Based on the Wall E reference it probably has to do with the human constructs the emperor makes, including the weird clone like version of himself and his wife but I am mostly guessing
Oh I for sure hated that but my fragments of memory are that I had a big big problem with the constructs well before that, but I don’t remember the specific part of the set up that made me so angry
I gave Bone Shard Daughter 2 stars. Didn't care enough to be mad at it. The series which made me mad like the way Bone Shard annoyed you was Malazan. 🤣 Gave Emily Wilde 2 stars too. Haven't forgiven the reviews that invoked Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (one of my all-time favourites) while praising it. 😤
I understand the two best offerings from Adrian Tchaikovsky are "Dogs of War" and "the Cage of Souls." And to ignore the rest of the hype machine. As always I appreciate you speaking truth to power and warning me of books that are a waste of my time. Happy New Year
I feel snobby when I say this, but I have read four books by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I think she has some of the coolest concepts but some of the most banal, unengaging prose.
I read Ink Blood Sister Scribe and did not like it all. Weird opening.. boring.. annoying.. and two disjointed story lines that finally converged at like chp 18 or something. I don't get the hype that existed for that book.. though yes it did seem to be brief and far between lol
You kinda made me wanna read Bone Shard Daughter. 🤣
I've read the series, even kinda enjoyed it. And that whole part had me CACKLINGGGG XD
I'm glad you didn't edit out Big Mad Liene. 😁 I haven't read that book, but I can slim my TBR a little now. I definitely had the FOMO back when everyone hyped it.
I cherish and adore BIG MAD Liene almost as much as Rings of Power hilarious snarky satirical Liene🎉🎉
My annual feast of Liene rant reviews 💆♀️You spoil us!
The pain is worth it to see your joy 🥲

I've committed to suffering so others don't have to - when WoT returns, so too shall my recaps
I knew you were gonna hate Emily Wilde and I was not disappointed.
I laughed SO HARD with the Bone Shard beat 😂 Pure, unadulterated indignation!!

I look forward to the unhaul video! 😂
I read Light Bringer in the begining of the year and haven’t recovered yet.
truly
Damn I've never seen you that mad, kinda want to read the book now 😂
can't say I didn't warn you if you end up hating it ;)
I think your critique of the movie Wall-E was just a bonus out of this review. Haha your vitriol during that whole review was cathartic.
lol glad it was a good experience

very excited to read that one
Bone Shard is in my tbr, now I don't know if I should immediately remove it or immediately make it my priority and "experience" it lol
I say go for it 🤪
ROFL. TBH, your review of Bone Shard Bonanza it's pretty much exactly how I felt after reading Eragon
I am SCRYing laughing at your magic system body slam of Bone Sharding Bozos. ROFL
I love watching " hate " the book reviews- even if I enjoyed the book lol.

The Worldbuilding is quite unique but that does not a good book make, for me anyway
@ ah ok good to know - the whole dragon bone ship thing felt eerily similar to hobbs but glad to hear it’s different. But very much noted thank you :)

So are you and your friend that suggested the book to you still on good terms 😂
lol yes she knows the dangers of recommending things to me
In which Liene doesn't realize a lot of people include the notion of a "soul" in their worldbuilding 🤣

Finally someone who feels like I do about Bone Ships!!! I just don't get it. I was so bored.
I think I know what thing you didn’t like in Bone Shard Daughter even though you forgot 😂
you know me so well ;)
@ it was probably related to “the twist” 😂
Please comment what it is!

@LienesLibrary And I do not know of what you speak. . . Is this like a "Guns of Navarone" reference? Or.
A video game perhaps?

Huh TIL that Emily Wildes has child abuse... that's wild

😳 I really hope you told your friend they shouldn't watch this video...😅 And no one recommend Liene any books!!!
lol she’s used to abuse from me 💀
