So, what do you say?
Should I go back to using a loadbox and IRs for my amp demos to hear the details better OR continue to use real cabs like here?

Cabs and speakers have so much character and NOBODY can bring attention to their subtleties like you. I understand wanting to simplify and control parameters for uniformity. Without breathing cabs and speakers, I fear we will lose the most compelling caveats, where opportunities for learning and discovery abound.
Thank you so much!
I think either is fine. I would choose whichever you enjoy doing the most.
There's so many high gain amps that basically do "5150 but a bit tighter" nowadays so it's awesome to hear an amp that does it's own thing.
That's a very good point!
Man I love those stepped Rockerverb knobs. Completely removes the possibility of endless obsessive microadjustments.
The Orange Rockerverb MkIII 50w head is literally my "dream amp" that I will only own in my dreams. It is easily the amp that I want the most, over ALL others.
I bought my Rockerverb 50 Mkiii combo from zZounds music store online. Zero percent interest over 12 or 24 months. Easy to afford. Best amp ever, face melting loud. I’ll never want or need another.
The Orange has a smooth distortion that seems to compress the pick attack no matter what. Whenever you switch to it that distinctive Orange roar comes through. Very cool. That said, that D-Moll is much more my speed. What a cool amp.
And my vote is for real amp. It's more fun when you're having more fun.
Just between the two of us, the D-Moll was the actual winner in this video to me
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Your secret is safe with me. But please include the D-Moll in more amp comparisons!
I never knew that the Rockerverb sounds this good
Rockerverb is one example where Amplitube really helped me. I tried out a Rockerverb trial head on amplitube and immediately fell in love with it. Even though I don't really have any need such a powerful head in my current situation, if I ever did, I wouldn't hesitate to grab it.
You know what’s funny? I was borrowing a friends 100 watt Mk3 at the same time Line 6 released their version of the Rockerverb in the Helix and hearing their version had me satisfied with that for a little while. But ultimately I wanted the in the room sound of a real Rockerverb and got my 50 watt. Zero regrets. Love that amp.
That rockerverb tone slays !
Fantastic shootout as always! Thank you!
As for cabs - I'd say always go where the fun is - that's what comes across same as the good tones! Added benefit is for me the a bit more lively sound!
Cheers!
Cheers!
Real cabinets!
I like real cabs videos as you can say how do you feal it in the room.
I'm missing the room mic also .
Good job.
This is an interesting shootout to say the least! The Rockerverb and 5150 are some of the amps I've been eying for quite some time now!
I used to use the rockerverb with a boost for years when playing live. Maybe not the ideal fit for modern metal but it offers something different that I think is beautiful. I don’t think the evh needs the boost in this test. Sounds tight from the start. Of course this will differ when played in dropped Z. :D
Diezel sounds cool!
Thanks for showing us the various sounds.
My pleasure
*Seven from Slipknot has entered the chat*
Lol
My fellow guitar player had that exact head, sounded amazing. I wanted a D-Moll really badly but couldn't find one. I always wondered how the combo would be. The Diezel always sounds great in videos!
I ended up buying a Sunn model T Reissue (which was my dream amp anyways) and the combo was great
Awesome! Do you still have the Sunn?
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne of course i do! I love it! Much more versatile than it might appear.. add an OD or EQ and you can riff away for days
very cool!
I like oranges
Thanks for this video. Well done! I like the sound of the EVH 5150 III much better than the sounds of the Rockerverb III. And if I regard the prices, the decision is very simple: buy a 5150 III, skip the overpriced Orange. With one exception: if you play mainly Stoner Rock or Stoner Doom or similar styles, the Rockerverb with its more muffled sound may fit better.
By the way: I think it has become a very very bad fashion to make amp review videos without real speakers. I am very happy if a youtuber uses real speakers and real cabs instead of some IRs.
Rockerverb is the most versatile least versatile amp imo. It's got the full range of gain you'd expect to see, but it only truly shines at the mid to high gain area. That said, that one Rockerverb tone is phenomenal, and worth owning the amp for. I've got the MKII 100W - no notched pots, but no attenuator. Hard tradeoff to make.
That is a tough one. The notched pots irritate me a lot but the attenuator is killer
For those still watching: switch off Stable Volume!
I actually like the notched pots and love the non-boosted sound of my MK III in drop-C. You can make Rockerverb tighter by boosting, but I believe you can't make 5150's lows to roar like Rockerverb. ;)
Clean channel gets nicer with more volume and you can always compensate with attenuator.
I think, i'd love to hear both real cabs and IRs, if you can fit both types into the same video, please. can your KHE amp switcher handle cabs, also? or can you ad an cab switcher? i've heard of a few. how many different tube guitar amp heads can the KHE handle , 4 or 8? can you play 2 amps at the same time, like an Axe Fx 3 does? Great video and playing. i was surprised at how decently the Orange did to the 2 better amps. i have a Herbert, and before this video, i never would have consedered the rockerverb a decent amp. thanks.
My mistake, doe IR impulse response refer to amps as well as cab IRs? until now, reading up only on getting an axe fx possobly in the future, they call the amps, amps, and the 1,000 cabs in it IRs. Amps and Cabs are both referred to as IRs? i havent read up on kemper profilers yet.
IRs just replicate the cab/mic/mic preamp part of circuit.
My KHE can do four amps and four cabs. I believe it can do dual cabs but no dual amps
hey, i have a rather out of line question. It's about the flight cases, these are from thomann, yes? I want to get one for my setup, to double as a sort of combo stand, and I was wondering which matterial should I choose. I'm affraid it's going to sag after some time. Do you have a recommendation on this topic?
I actually love the notched pots, don't hate me.
To each his own.
Yes, the ones I have are from Thon/Thomann and are super sturdy. I doubt they'll ever buckle under the weight of a combo
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne thank you for your input.
it's not actually a combo but a 1x12 and an orange super crush, so the case might end up costing almost as much what's inside it 😅
Also, FYI, the Mk1 has fully variable pots. No detented pots anywhere. Way better for the gain, because with the way the Orange gain is, it can be literally a mm, or two that make the difference, especially with the 4 gain stages. I love to go right where the third stage kicks in, and back it off what would be 1/2 a step on your pots here, but wouldn't be possible with the detented pots. I don't understand why Orange did that. I'd be mega annoyed too.
Yes! THANK YOU! I find the gain needs to be set very meticulously on Oranges. A detented gain pot is just counter productive here
I prefer the sound of a “creamier” amp like the Orange in a full mix, but I prefer a tighter amp like the 5150 when playing. 🤷🏻♂️
wow that rockerverb 50 mkIII sounds phenomenal!
I have a Terror, but would dig a 3-6w version of the Rocker for studio and practice
I went from a terror to a Rockerverb and it’s so much better man. With the attenuator I can play even quieter than the terror at 0.5W, with like double the gain
@@Rob0tacon I've been "attenuating" with the volume on various fuzz pedals. 😅
Real cabs for me 👍🏼
Own the Rockerverb, too. Don't realy use it...allthough it sounds very good.
Same 😅
Same. I view my Rockerverb as an amp for blending. Sounds great paired with a Herbert for lows or Mark for highs.
Can you do a quick video about those mic mounts? Are they Gravity? How do they compare to the Audix Cabgrabber/XL?
Yeah. I might. They are Gravity stands
www.thomann.de/de/gravity_ms_cab_cl_01.htm
I've never had an Audix Cabgrabber
Hi, I'm sorry if i missed it but do you know what kind of attenuator is it?
Sorry, I don't have a clue. All I know for certain is that it sits post fx loop
As far as I know it’s really just a post phase inverter master volume that they call an “attenuator”
you need to get a mk1 50 in there? No one's compared a mk2, or 3 to the 1 before. That said, I might try to do it soon here if I can track down a mk2/3 to borrow.
I'd love to try a mk1. That uses entirely different power tubes doesn't it? 6V6 IIRC
@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Yeah, four 6V6's. It's def different compared to the 2/3. Im sure you could mod it to use just two 6L6/EL34, but its the 6v6's I love. Its still the same gain structure as any other RV, but the 6v6's just make it sound more compressed, and a bit more scooped/chewy. TBH, by itself it's not always what you want, especially compared to El34's/6L6's etc, but blending w/ other Amps is where this thing is majic.
I looove the Rockerverb sound. It's VERY intense in the midrange, which is why I'm not currently using it in my two-guitar post-metal band... But I really want to. 😅 Modern or not, it's a helluvan amp, can sound calm and pretty, "claw your face off"-aggressive and most everything in between.
I'm glad you included the reverb trick.
I think the notched knobs are a minor annoyance, now that I own the amp. I don't really think about them, but I was very concerned prior to buying the amp.
I like cabs when I'm playing by myself or with the band, but for shootout purposes and TH-cam, I'd say you can do what suits your use case best. IRs are like a controlled environment all on their own, nothing changes, and you don't accidentally bump the mic. Besides, you're pretty adept at making cool sounding IRs, so perhaps that's the route for you to go? ❤
@@jesperbc Cheers, buddy! Thanks for the feedback
Muss man mögen, ich mag den ! Video ist Niiiiiiceeee ❤
You should demo the New OR30. I have the OR30 and the rockerverb mk3 and the 30 is better in every way…..tighter, heavier louder
I'd love to!
Orange Rockerverb 50 mkiii is for real men.
Orange sounds better.
Ich finde den Amp geil. Ich habe ihn immer nur angespielt , aber nie gekauft . Warum auch immer 😂
EVH is always so shrill sounding...
