When caught in an awkward silence, simply look behind and slightly above the person and say "Woah, look at the time!" Then, as they turn the other way, quickly run away and hide. This will give you ample time to think of what to say next, and will redirect the awkwardness into confusion about how you disappeared. A master of this technique can even use their random disappearance IN their conversation-starter. "Yeah, I'm a magician. I do that all the time" or "The space-time continuum is far from perfect, you know".

I tried this on an outdoors date, in a picnic-style setup, with a mat and some food in the middle of a large, flat, grassy field. She just looked at me funny and called the cops. =(
Fuji Huynh Called the cops? This technique shouldn't be illegal, but if you DO get confronted by law enforcement, follow Rhett's instructions at 4:42 and you'll be fine.

I don't get why silence is awkward to most people. I'm generally as comfortable with silence as conversation: it's only awkward if you think it is.
You still need to conversation with someone to be able to get close and comfortable enough to sit in silence with them without it being awkward
During the awkward silence, I usually put my hands together and say, "And now, the awkward silence," and start laughing in such a way that it's obvious that I was trying to be awkward. Sometimes, it'll actually encourage conversation, and other times, the other person will just say goodbye.

I try to have a list of things I'm curious about in the back of my head, and then i just ask questions until something sparks a conversation.
I really don't like it when someone only answers one word answers and doesn't try to engage in talking.

"Taking it to the max" Is just a phrase used when saying that you are doing something with all of your effort essentially. They are just joking about how vague the question was.

***** english is actually one of the hard languages to learn because it so complicated
Mr. Splashman no it is not. english is the easiest language in terms of grammar and words, obviously there are some exceptions but it is actually the most easier to learn. other languages (like spanish or french) have different words for when you're refering to a she or a he but english uses the same word for both

We shouldn't be afraid of awkward silences. Conversations are supposed to be messy. It's during those "awkward" moments we start to reveal ourselves. Texting is wonderful but it creates a gap between who we actually are because of how we want to be perceived.
It may seem like Rhett is being funny with the suggestion of keeping eye contact during a period of awkward silence, but it 100% works. Maybe not in a new friendships, but in an established one, or a potential relationship eye contact is a sign of confidence and shows comfort with the other person (since most people break eye contact if they are uncomfortable). Eye contact in general is a good idea, especially with a strong poker face.
