- The Soldier(1998): The Contest(Scene 5)
"In a futuristic society, some people are selected at birth to become soldiers, and trained in such a manner that they become inhuman killing machines. One of the most succesfull and older of these soldiers (Russell) is pitted against a new breed of soldiers, and after the confrontation is believed to be dead. His body is left behind in a semi-abandoned colonial planet, where everything is peaceful, and he is taught about the other aspects of life. But eventually he has to fight the new breed of soldiers again, this time to defend his new home..."

During filming, this running sequence was Kurt’s final scene, once done, he went straight to In N Out!
I was average student like Kurt russel in these movie waiting for dope for einstien brain from us hospital for success
Yeah he had broken or sprained his ankle during filming, so they did this scene last, IIRC
Jason Scott Lee coming out of the smoke behind Kurt always gives me chills. Such a great scene.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ so bad ass
Agreed. Mogli sure makes a fine soldier.
@@solosniper86 no way man
Todd has been trained how to pace himself throughout his life as a soldier, Caine was bred to give 100% and not stop, the ability to keep going even when you're tired is much more impressive than getting perfect results everytime.
It's like how a marathon runner conserves his energy for the long haul. Sure you can go 100% for a short while, but you'll tire yourself out quickly. Running at a good pace then using the stored-up energy in short bursts when needed is much more effective.
@Lee being able to keep going all day after the guy with the perfect result has long since collapsed from exhaustion still wins out in the end, perfect results are worthless if they come at the expense of being able to keep fighting indefinitely.
@Lee in battle, the soldier who breaks first always loses.
@@rhino2960 There are far stronger real life people than this super soldier. Back then i thought that climbing rope without legs is not doable. A pure fiction. But there are people which climb faster on rope. Precision beats power. Timing. Super soldier legs are hanging and use both hands. Marcus Mondi climbs with legs upright. 60 meters. Its a skill. Not something incredible. Timing and skill beats anything.
@@LORDVADER357 agreed precision beats power, but precision which is obtained as a result of expending excess power, is self defeating in a fight that lasts a long time, the new boy is running at full tilt all the time, he may be obtaining precise results, but he's burning the candle at both ends, when he exhausts himself, todd will still be ready to fight at 100%
The candle that burns twice as bright will always last half as long, while the slow burn candle with the smaller flame, will last all night.
What i really love about this scene is how Todd was just 100% focused on killing Caine and had no doubt that the order would come. Caine otoh looked unsure and seemed confused about what was about to happen. When 2 more of the old soldiers got sent up, Todd immediately went into attack/surround position. It's a call back to the 3 dogs tearing at the one wild pig scene from the training/growing up montage. A nice touch.
You really love this, do you not?
Yes, they should have focused on the brain as much as the brawn.
Thats so true, it works with the greatest advantage Todd have over all... his experience
I don't think Caine was confused.
@@carlost856 The rookies were simply inexperienced. It was the arrogance of the Colonel thinking they were ready to outright replace the veterans that was their undoing. He should have integrated them with the veterans. We see it later in the movie where he relished the opportunity for them to receive combat experience against untrained civilians when he should have allowed them to be led by Todd's unit.
back when movies didn't need to rely on CGI....
YES.
There's plenty of VFX in this movie, and yes, the movie relies A LOT on them to create its world.

He was 47 years old in this movie

Lethal Weapon, Under Siege, Point Break as well.
@Happily Ham you got that right!
Gary Busey was a great actor he definitely underrated.
Profound!
15 miles in one hour
That's..a 4min mile...dear god
Yes
After one 4 minute mile the best sprinter in the world would be tired. 15 miles in one hour is 15 CONSISTENT four minute miles, without any increase or decrease in speed. That's just to put it into the proper context. And Captain Church did inquire about endurance in Mekum's new genetically engineered soldiers. Caine 607 accomplished a 15-mile run in exactly ONE HOUR, without breaking a sweat. And he STILL had the endurance and the stamina to fight three of the previous generation soldiers, selected at birth and trained from infancy, with explosive action and speed, killing two and stunning Sergeant Todd 3467.
The whole point of that display was to demonstrate how far beyond the capabilities of Todd's generation of soldiers Caine's batch were, to a point where they almost seemed superhuman, which they accomplished with frightening efficiency.
Bs dude the soilder wearing black are on steroids or something , They get injected with something...

Same.
I like this movie too it is childhood memories for me.
One thing I remember is how Caine looked confused, almost like "aren't we on the same side?". Todd looked resentful at Caine, as if he already knew that Todd would be dismissed and cease to exist if Caine proved superior.
To give serious credit to Kurt Russell, he'd badly hurt both of his ankles during shooting, requiring them to structure his shootings based on what he'd be doing. Lying and sitting scenes were shot first, followed by standing and walking, and then fighting and running. In other words, he's running on two badly beat up ankles here, and he's barely showing it.
Or it was a stuntman?
@@ChristianProtossDragoon Nope, Kurt did almost all of his stunts (the only one he needed help with was the chain fight for distance shots for insurance reasons).
@@Tracer_Krieg Never knew that! Wow. Thanks for telling me. So he is the american Jackie Chan in a way. 😂

Imagine the endurance one would have to have to run 4 minute miles for 15 miles! And to do that in combat boots and pants!
Yes.
Most combat boots are very comfortable but very heavy when compared to a running shoe.
Then speed up a chain. And then defeat three trained soldiers. Two of whom didn't just get done running.
Ridiculous, they're soldiers, musclemen. They should have have ankle weights strapped around their boots too. but I agree the pants limit their movement. They should remove them and only wear thongs instead.
@@mikealvarez8250the best soles you could get on combat boots back then were sand soles. while they were way more comfortable than the factory rubber soles they were nowhere near as comfortable as modern boots from 2005 to now
"Is your soldier tired" ummmm Gary the dude just ran 15 miles in an hour and has hardly broken a sweat meanwhile Todd looks like he just got out of a pool and is visibly breathing heavy.....
That's why Todd needs A LOT more training.. He's weak.

The thing is with this movie, we are meant to root for Todd since he is the good guy etc. and i don't really remember the 'lore' but these are all soldiers in some kind of dystopian society.. if we've already made the decision that breeding super soldiers from children is the way we want to do it, surely this new guy is actually far superior by all measures..
Yes.
Physical superiority doesn't stop a bullet to the head. They bleed as easily as any ordinary human, as Todd demonstrates at the end of the movie when he singlehandedly destroyed them all due to his decades of combat experience. It's a story of war as old as war itself.
There is a theory that this movie exists in the same universe as “Blade Runner” and “Alien”
And that Caine here is like Roy Batty (Rutgar Hauers character) from Blade Runner. They’re both replicants. Artificially created person to do the hard jobs
@@joshuasantana685 Caine maybe, but unlikely to be Todd, his lifespan is much longer and more human.
@roguerover7598 Todd, human trained and indoctrinated from birth. Caine, a human test tube baby, modified to enhance qualities. This includes being juiced to the gills.
Story takes place in Blade Runner universe. Replicants may or may not have been made yet.
What really comes down is the experience.
If it were me instead of outright replacing the Vets I’d take some of them and make them NCOs of the super soldiers because they have far more actual combat experience and have the rest be a heavy weapons platoon.
Exactly, I think in the WH40k universe that seems to be a thing.
Agreed, but they should all specialise in heavy weapons, thats what their muscles are for. Also the NCOs should be deployed along with the new recruits if needed.
one of the best action movies ever 🔥
One of Kurt Russel's lesser known roles, but he nailed it in this film. He portrayed the role of a stoic, hardened soldier. Socially awkward due to his lifetime of training and war, and his facial profile is even fitting for that role.

Yes.
I always took it as yes Todd has experience but also the old soldiers were taught to be smart. New soldiers were just taught to be skilled. It’s like at the very beginning when it showed them as kids, they were in a classroom putting a puzzle together before they focused on running, fighting and marksmanship
Americas military should start using genetic engineered Troops in a new branch of service

It was a rounded reflected disaster
Humans have run a mile in under 4 minutes (Sir Roger Bannister was the first recorded case), but to keep a sustained pace of that speed for a whole hour is unheard of, but probably not out of reach in the future. The world record for a marathon (26.2 miles) is 2:01:39, which averages out to 4:39 per mile.
Of course, Caine is a specially-bred super-soldier, and even if Todd completed the 15-mile run in, say, 85 minutes (an educated guess, which would put him finishing 5 minutes after Caine), it puts his mile pace at 5:40, which would suggest a time of under 2:30:00 for a marathon. That is still pretty impressive even for a soldier.
The marathon is finally sub-2 hours now thanks to Eliud Kipchoge’s insane record-breaking exhibition run. But like you said: a soldier with that much muscle mass running long distance at that pace while staying functional afterwards is awesome.
Put into perspective that soldiers aren't even specifically trained for such long distance sustained running, but instead cross trained for multiple physical aspects namely fighting and carrying heavy loads while moving, and Todd's run is even more impressive.
Other factors are that Todd was taught to run at that specific pace so he wouldnt be tired after and at the time he would be almost 40
I just realized that Mekum is the same guy who played Cpt Steele in Black Hawk Down
:)

@@TheAmateurEditor I wish The Soldier got a sequel.
@@ChristianProtossDragoon Audiences are to blame in part. We complain about Hollywood churning out the same tired old ideas time and time again, be it in remakes, reboots or sequels, but when a great film like this with brilliant acting and engaging characters that have arcs are delivered, we are nowhere to be found when buying tickets and supporting the concept.
Look at Dredd with Karl Urban. God-damn was that the best action film of the last decade but no one bothered to see it.
This film was also part of the Blade Runner universe, just thinking of the potential for story-lines is enough to get me pumped. Imagine if young, creative writers came up with expansive concepts and seasoned writers helped shape the narrative and characters... Such a damn shame and colossal waste.

They made them fast but not SMART! Todd was very smart and experienced, you see a soldier with an IQ of just 10 points higher will always perform better, so these guys were cooking up all muscle brutes in the lab but forgot the brain, maybe they didn't wanted them too smart or they would be taking over, I would guess that if you were able to cook up a super soldier with an IQ of 180 and a strength of a gorilla you would have a new kind of human subspecies.

brah...its a guy 20 years younger...of course he gonna run faster
Everything is circumstantial. We are always putting simulated battles and fights. Here we have Todd an older and more experienced soldier going head to head in a test of endurance with a younger and arguably better fit soldier. Of course the younger soldier will beat the older soldier in endurance. The younger soldier is more fit. Put those two in a war zone with weapons it is no surprise that experience will be the deciding factor
A perfect soldier only has to follow orders perfectly without hesitation. Only strength is important, experience is not needed as orders are given, even on the field, to direct the soldier on what to do.
