  • In this video I find haunted shadows in my house. First I find that the shadow to a ball forms a star, and then the letter J....how could this be happening? What is a reverse pinhole camera and how could it be effecting the shadows in my house?

    The rays of the sun are all parallel for our line of sights. The reason why we see the patterns from eclipses is because of the wave interference of the light rays, double slit experiment explains that but basically even if you sent one ray at a time you'd get interference and the distribution of the copies of light projections are equal to the wave pattern. And also it's the lens that turns the image upside down for our eyes and camera obscura only inverts without a lens if a) the object is bigger than the pinhole for the perspective, and b) the rays are diffuse so that they project based on the available angle to the surface (as shown in the diagram in the video).

    If we would have 5 light sources next to each other and every one of them would have different letters, then it would be possible to literally write something on the wall with shadows just by holding a ball in front of it? Or is is only works with one light source (aka. only one letter is possible)?

    • @nguyenkhanhhailinh1721
      @nguyenkhanhhailinh1721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think that would work, because all 5 of the light sources would be pointing at the same object, i.e the ball, therefore, the light beams coming from different angles would meet, making the shadow blurry and almost impossible to read
      It may work if you have 5 different light sources evenly spaced out a bit so the light don't meet, pointing straight at the same large backdrop and you have 5 different balls hanging in front of them

    • @bhavyamehta2336

    It's interesting what you said about our brain flips/reverses the image formed on our retina. My brother was in the Navy and took part in an experiment that had them wearing glasses that flipped their vision upside-down. He said it was weird as after a day or so, their brains compensated and everything flipped back to normal.

    • @TheActionLab
      @TheActionLab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, so to say the brain flips it is basically just saying that we are used to it

    • @TottyRops
      @TottyRops 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surprisingly, it works incredibly accurately. You can see the body take over the source of light very clearly. Almost as if it's a one page flip book, or a video on a piece of paper. A few years ago, I had the chance to light a short film to be shot in the style of movies in the 1910s & 20s. We shot black and white film with a hand-wound 35mm Mitchell camera and were careful to use only early practical, non-computer generated effects. One scene had two elderly farmers walking back from their field holding a tiny moon fairy in their hands. Yes, moon fairy, but let's move on.
    We lit the farmers by hiding a lightbulb in the box they were carrying, as you might guess. But to generate the stars in the background we tool a large 20x20 black overhead cloth on a tubular frame, and stuck lot's of tiny discs of foil all over it.
    Using a technique I had read about, we opened the lens up to the widest f-stop, and placed a little 5 pointed star cutout in front of the lens. The focus was on the guy's faces in closeup, so the background dots, out of focus appeared as little 5 point stars! It was a subtle, yet really cool effect that added much to the final film. If you want to see it, visit en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claire_(2001_film).

    It works with colors as well; try different shaped color cutouts.

    Hey can you magnify a shadow !? Do an episode on this please !!!

    You should create reverse pinhole cameras all the way down a hallway so that as you walk down the hall, the shadow of the ball changes into different letters. That would seem even more haunted.

    Ok, that was pretty cool. I did not know about the reverse pin-hole camera effect. Is this effect used for anything? Thanks for making this video!

    When you mentioned Solar eclipses something went through my mind.. I saw the lastest solar eclipse here on Chile but something else caught my attention, instead of looking st the sky I was looking at the ground for something called Shadow Bands, they are like a turbulence noise shadow, that was kinda weird but immediately I thought about collimated light and interference. Btw you should make a video about that, have a great day

    Awesome video once again! Could you please do an experiment demonstrating how during a solar eclipse the moon casts a smaller shadow then its actual size. I cannot figure out how to replicate this. :(

    Holy crapola why has no reporter or astronomer getting interviewed during an eclipse ever explained that eclipse shadow trick. Really cool. I don't know if those victorian seance folk knew about this trick, but if they did it would have been the perfect thing to accompany ouija boards and levitating furniture.

    I knew immediately what is going on despite the name of the video. I didn't look at the name of the video right off the bat, i usually look at the thumbnail first
