I have been to Japan three times, always going business class between LAX and KIX on JAL and I thought it was flawless, the service, the seating, everything was quite nice and the food was great the Japanese main meal was amazing.
I think the only good thing about JAL is that they put 8 seats across in the 787 economy, which is really nice. But thankfully you didn't end up on their 767 which is definitely one of the worst and least comfortable aircraft out there.

Truth, but Narita isnt that bad, yes it is far but it still is very nice, I have flown into both Narita and Haneda, and I would say the real difference in terms of how they feel, is that Haneda feels more Japanese, while Narita is just a really big, but nice airport

Cannot trust Skytrax. Yesterday I took IST-FRA on Lufthansa 5* in Economy. All we got foodwise was ONE COOKIE. I had a nice dinner in the TK Lounge, but still a total joke. Turkish does a full meal service on that route
So, something you need to know is that JAL puts their best products on actual long haul 8hour+ (outside of Asia) 7 hours is medium haul - and they put the oldest and inferior products on the less travelled routes. I am a Japanese, and I never fly with JAL because guess what, even their crew training seems to be lacking. I was once on a domestic KIX-HND flight, and there was this dude sitting on the aisle seat of my row, with seat reclined and table opened from the time we left the gate until we arrived at the gate. Seriously, if you can't even tell a passenger to close up the tray table and not use the reclining seat while taking off and landing, how do you expect me for you to be able to do anything when an emergency happens? Oh yeah the flight attendants I encountered flying multiple time on JAL had an attitude toward me too. Why would I fly with them when I can fly with ANA?
I have noticed most business class does not, or no longer is family friendly, as you said, there is no way anyone can hold a conversation or be social during a flight. JAL was such a good airline a few years back...

Hard to believe they are same status as ANA and a number of other airlines.
I liked JAL business from New York to NRT better than ANA first. The seat config is great and I love that you can order food anytime. I conversely flew Cathay J from Shanghai to Hong Kong and from Hong Kong to New York and though they were terrible. To each their own, I guess!
Meal service on a tray on a 7-hour flight? Hmm.. That packaged bread looks pathetic when some airlines provide hot pastry in economy. Weird that for 7-8h flight they only serve "Chinese Rice Dumpling or Ice Cream" while relatively same duration on Oman Air you'd get full meal. Thanks for the video, need to keep my expectation low then. How was the seat? Read some reports saying it was very narrow. Feel any differences compared to reverse herringbone in other airlines?
I have only flew their first class long haul before. I would say their first class is quite nice. You even have mattress pad choices! Food is pretty good as well. Their F lounge at SFO was pathetic to say the least though. I would fly them again in F long haul. From the looks of their J class, seems like it’s better than United Polaris but doesn’t come close to Qatar airways.
Yikes! That seat definitely looked like it had seen better days, Dan. Just be careful not to criticize the "5-star rating" too loudly. You don't want to have SkyTrax stalking you like they did poor Josh Cahill. They don't like it when you tell the truth!
Hi there. Sadly this product is a regional product intended for low yield markets. Please try the sky suite similar to Oman air as that's JL's true long haul product.
I love JAL, but I have to admit that their medium haul business class is underwhelming to say the very least. They do not offer a pre-departure beverage (apart from a bottle of water which I get in CX in Economy as a JL Emerald client ...) the seat is very aged and apart from the main meal, the meal choices are a joke. In terms of Tokyo airports I actually prefer Narita over Haneda as it is less crowded (at least T2 where JAL and the other One World members are based) and the JAL First Class lounges are so much better than in Haneda.
