This is definitely not Alia's best performance. Not by a long way. Her best performance, IMO, is in Raazi.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to create grand set pieces and exquisite costume design and choreography, so his movies are always beautiful to look at, however his movies can be a hit or miss in terms of emotional engagement and light weight in terms of storytelling . Even if the movies are not always successful, the musical numbers are always very popular. I personally cannot sit through his movies beyond few minutes, but his aesthetics of set and costume are always excellent.
If you really like this movie, you will definitely like Padmavat, Bajirao Mastani and Devdas
It's from bollywood yes. But many people don't like the term. So it's safe to call it indian cinema lol. Also, she nailed the pronounciation of "Sanjay leela bhansali" like a pro 👏

This was definitely not her breakout role. She was already established as one of the best actors of this generation through previous movies like Highway, Udta Punjab, Raazi, Gully Boy and Dear Zindagi and most recently Darlings. You should check out all these movies. She has received multiple accolades for them.

Here is also another reason why Indian movies are longer. 90% of Indian movies are 2.5 - 3 Hours long.
For 104 years of the movie industry in India, most of this period the filmmakers made money from few things other than movies in theaters. And I'm not talking about action figures or comics.
See, in the US music Albums and singles make such big hits, millions for the artists, and studios. This has got nothing to do with movies.
But here, albums and singles were not that successful most of the time before the Internet.
So, the filmmakers would add like 6-8 songs in movies... even if the songs were not part of the story they would just drop them in random places in the movies sometimes. After that, the movie producers would release the songs as "Movie song albums" before the actual release of the movie. The songs, through Cassette tapes(before this period only the rich can afford vinyl records and players) and CD sales, would make them some money and also will let them know whether this movie would be a hit or not. So, even if the movie did not do well in theatres the movie producers would at least make some money with songs. This continued a little to the DVD period and died down totally after the internet. Most movies did well from the songs alone even if the plot was shit.
That is why India has ~50% of singers of the entire country dedicated to being playback singers, and musicians work for movies, and the rest % do it solo or with a band or with a studio or go for religious singing.
Now, it has changed. Because no one buys CDs, DVDs, or pays money to download songs here in this period.
Most Indian movies have 2-3 songs now. Some will have songs related to the plot. Some commercial and masala movies(targeted at the local audience) will have songs at random places
(reason- that may sometimes attract the audience to have them watch that good or crappy movie)

over-the-top cool action-drama movies - KGF 1 & 2(Kannada language movies)
Interesting action, story movies Vikram, Kaithi( falls in the same universe. Prequel to vikram)(Tamil language movie)
Minnal murali- A good refreshing superhero movie. A very good attempt by the Malayalam industry filmmakers. (Malayalam language movie)
Tumbbad- One of the best fantasy thriller with some horror to come out (good story, good make-up, good set pieces). There are not many horror films, to begin with here. This is a rare one. (Hindi language movie)

Prostitution is kinda legal in India , like private adult sex work and independent prostitution by sex workers is legal but soliciting it or pimping it or doing it publically or owning a brothel is illegal and punishable...basically do it in secret...but quite recently Supreme Court did acknowledge sex work as a legitimate profession and they are supposed to come up with a legal framework regarding this in future...this was basically to prevent the harassement and incarcaration of sex workers by police that happens so often in our country
this wasnt a breakout role for Alia...Alia Bhatt has been doing amazing movies and stellar performances since beginning of her career..i think there are only 3 bad movies in her filmography..in most of her movies she has been amazing...i highly recommend you watch Raazi, her best performance imo, Udta Punjab, Kapoor And Sons and Gully Boy

I would recommend you to start from gangs of wasseypur ,2 films(2.5+2.5) hrs are there just give it your 40 minutes
Undivided attention to understand the nuances and humour. It would suck you in ,and after both films it would be a great experience.
It's both fun & artsy at the same time .

one other reason why Indian movies are long - coz we have a short interval break (for granted) , giving audience a chance to refresh and settle in cinema. Also, thats why there is usually a cliffhanger scene at that mid point, so people get excited for second half!!
23:30 I have watched western musicals and believe me they suck in comparison to bollywood stuff. They are terribly bad. While there are some movies here too where dancing looks out of character/plot, however, nowadays especially, most movies incorporate in a manner that is very similar and realistic to life as it happens. It doesn't look odd, but instead, makes it much better. That's how I'd prefer musicals too, not like western musicals where the person starts singing about "their feelings" (To take one instance) which is highly unrealistic.
And vijay(raziabai) character was a trans too. Just a cultural cue that most native would have easily picked up on since it's culturally understood.
Best Movie of the Year??? Naha!!! If you want to watch Best Movie of the Year. Hands Down it will be “Kantara - The Legend”. Kannada movie from Sandalwood. Yeah one more “wood” We all are going bonkers over hear in India. WoooooooooooooW!!!! I am from the North but South is taking over the world!
Now Theatre price in multiplex is 100₹ for two hours, and 120₹ for three hours...
There are people who want more 1 hour for twenty rupees.....
For eg, My father take me to watch JODHA AKBAR (3.5 HR)

Sir Unlike America India do have winter and snowfall every year(almost for month Nov-Feb). Though the temperature is different according to region. Northern India is colder then south India.
Regarding length of the films: Indian films ( barring some Netflix produced Indian movies these days) don't follow three-act structure of script writing. These films divides its narrative into two halves witha interval point. Every thing happens twice before the final resolution. Infact, Indian critics nd movie goers h've discussion on movies in terms of good/bad first half and second half.
Wow Kelly got Sanjay’s entire name perfectly. My one grouse against Sanjay’s movie is that while they are visually Gorgeous, the characterization tends to be Disney-ish , not a proper word , but to give a sense of Sanjay type of movies.. even his serious ones , to me , miss the core depth and grittiness of a story or character.
Recommended movies on Netflix semi horror, gorgeously choreographed and talks of a horrible custom in 1900s India called “Bulbul” , “Mimi” has an American angle.. a light hearted but has a Social Commentary , on Prime watch “Tumbadd” a horror based on Folklore. Amir Khan’s “Dangal” is a must watch, based on a True Story.
The movie is very superficial , has very weak story and lack emotional depth and I am saying this when I am a SLB fan. The only line that stuck with me was "Even God can't understand our pain"

You mentioned Alia Bhatt's embarrassing moment on TV, "her baggage" as you said. She was on a very popular TV interview show headed by an even more popular Indian director and producer, Karan Johar. It includes games where actor guests answer trivia questions, have speed rounds, etc., and compete for a large gift basket full of fancy gifts. Alia had been on the show with her co-stars to push her then new movie "Student of the Year".
Unfortunately Alia had a brain fart and gave a totally wrong answer to an easy question. She immediately became the big celebrity joke. "Alia Bhatt is so stupid that she..." type of jokes were everywhere.
Rather than get mad, she went on a then very popular TH-cam comedy channel and filmed a very funny response titled "AIB : Alia Bhatt - Genius of the Year". You should definitely react to it. 😁

You should definitely watch - 'Manikarnika the queen of Jhasi 'by kangana ranaut she is considered the best actress in India right now for her acting skills and kangana ranaut is the highest paid actor (female ) in India not Alia bhat and she has won national awards for acting which is superior than Any filmfare award in India
