The Chola Dynasty was the longest-ruling dynasties in world history. They ruled India to south east Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia etc.
The Movie is about The Chola Dynasty. It was based on the Novel by Kalki's ' Ponniyin Selvan ' released in 1950s. The story is real story of the Golden Era of Tamil, the Great Empire of Cholas throughout South East Asia. BAHUBALI was inspired from this Ponniyin Selvan.

It's like 70%history and 30%fiction. It is based on one of the best novels in Indian Tamil history which was written in the 50s. The author Kalki went to great lengths in researching the history of the Cholas/ land to write a novel based on that.
The historical part is about the Chola empire(Usually Not mentioned in any of the western societies) who ruled over southern India, and most of the southeast Asian countries as they controlled all sea trade routes and were very good in naval warfare/ flamethrowers on ships/ Elephant army. Their ruling takes place through generations for more than 1000 years(Yes, it is true, and the recorded time period is this, from 200-300BC to ~13th century. Unrecorded, may be an extent to 2000 years till the 13th century). Their maritime force was were very powerful. Some of their temples are over 1000 years(One was celebrated recently as it reached 1000 years) and many temples are still in active use by millions of people. This is the short version of history.
Actually, there were more like 2 more kingdoms(Cheras & Pandiyas) fighting out and Cholas won and outlasted them all in southern India.

The famous Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia was also built by a chola king.
Ponniyan selvan is a 5 volume Tamil novel written by kalki krishnamurthy on the chola dynasty and is considered as the greatest novel in Tamil literature.
Bahubali is a full fledged fiction...but this movie is history.....and it's a 70 year dream of tamil cinema 🎥

I think this could be confusing at times because of the ensemble cast and characters having different names and titles. They also speak in classic tamil language at times.
Infact it was meant to be a series, but was squeezed into 2 parts due to budget constraints.
It would be helpful if you could identify the main cast with characters and how they are related. It goes way over your head otherwise. Even Indians in other parts of India who don't know Tamil history find it hard to keep up.
