- Pat (Patricia) Mackey was an inaugural member of North York General Hospital's Patient and Family Advisory Council. Following her cancer reoccurrence in the winter of 2013 and while receiving care at the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care, she generously shared her time, candid thoughts and observations, on video, of what it is like to live with a terminal cancer diagnosis.
Pat's wish was that by sharing her experience, patients and families will know that "palliative care is about finding energy and joy in your day, not focusing on the illness."
On February 24, 2014 Pat passed away surrounded by her family.

i am 22 with severe heart troubles, and mu kidneys failed so i am also a dialysis patient. i worry about dying every day, im just afraid, but for now as long as i am alive i will love as much as i can. bless this woman.

Do not fear death ! According to all the research we have done with people who went to the other side and came back; it is fantastic. They describe a feeling of absolute love . Usually they are asked if they want to come back and most decide to do so, but somewhat reluctantly. We do not hear about the ones who decided to move on . Pretty sure, they are fine. Nature has a way to care for us and after all, our organic bodies will always fail but the energy that makes us what we are, is indestructible. Hope you can read this. If not, you are in a better place, for sure.

Hi Don,U been going to a lot, but keep going, remember persistence pays.
I had 5 tumors from 2 and a half to 10 cm in my breast, 37 lythnodes positive, removal of both breast, have bad lythodema had chemo then radiation then more chemo took pills hormone tablets and will take them for the rest of my life but im still here 10 years later! So their is hope! Dont give up!

I was lucky to have met this wonderful woman just before her diagnosis. She was very strong and positive. I moved out to another country just after her surgery. I was wondering about her. I sent a messsage to her e-mail sometime ago but no answer. I was very sad to know she is not in this world anymore. Such a lovely lady which everyone can see in this video through her message and insights about passing. Hip Pat Mackey. You are certainly very much missed.

My husband died of glioblastoma multiform in 2012. We still miss him every day. It never changes. We’ve move on, but yet we are stuck with a hole in our family forever.

Thank you so brave. My husband has stage 4 pancreatic cancer he is 52 years old. We found out 4 months ago. It is so hard my world has changed. It is hard but I have to be strong for our teenage boys. I hate cancer a cure needs to be found.
My husband is 61 and has been diagnosed with liver cancer!
We know it’s very bad, going to see a oncologist on Tuesday next week, this will be the make or break of how we move forward!
We know it’s terminal but I pray I will have him for as long as I can as long as he isn’t in pain x
My story continues with 6 months home by and he has been on oral chemo and the cancer has halved in size in his liver!

What a beautiful women how positive and beautiful she is thank you for giving me strength as a cancer patient myself …. I just cannot believe how calm and lovely this women is ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think fear of death and cancer is deeply related to our notion of liberty. We want to believe we’re the owners of our life and being imposed a death sentence is almost unbearable. But on the other hand being told you’re going to die in 6 months or 2 weeks gives you a sense of power and wisdom that most people don’t and will never have: you know the whole story, from beginning to end. Some doctors die before their terminal patients do. I even saw this documentary where a 40 year old british lady was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she suddenly lost a friend to a car accident. That friend was not aware she had even less time left to live than her cancer-ill friend. So the moral is: we’re ALL going to die someday. It’s just some of us know exactly when it’s going to happen, so don’t be afraid: live your life to the fullest because no one knows who’s going to be here tomorrow or next week.

Dear God, when she was talking about what her husband's life would be like once she's gone, & how widows/widowers have a "gaping hole of loneliness", I lost it. My husband of nearly 30 years passed away 5 weeks ago, & her words are the truest explanation of my life now. We weren't able to have children, so it's just me & our cat. He's great for cuddling, but not much for conversation. I live in pretty isolated rural area, so it's not easy finding ways to socialize if you don't go to church or the local bars. I never really understood loneliness until now. I'm in my mid-fifties... I can't fathom living another 20 years this way.
Be strong
You will find a way. Be strong and know that where there is a way .all things are possible, . Get out and about. People need people. Donate time ,. The Lord will always be here . Just call on him . our mnents and time on Earth . I love you my friend l

So beautiful! I hope her end was as peaceful as she wished, and that her husband and children find comfort as they remember her. I am surviving Stage IV CRC, and while I do not dwell on Cancer, it is always there, in my thoughts, in some form, every single day. I understand her every word, and live each day as best I can. Life is too short, no matter the age we pass.

What a brave person. I admire her courage in facing this situation. Im 29 now and was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. I was lucky that it was controllable with molecular targeted drugs. All I had to do was take pills every day and at one point I was even motivated/fit enough to do a triathlon. But nothing in this world goes smoothly. Sadly, this treatment was too strenuous for my body and last summer I unexpectedly came down with Pulmonary Hypertension and heart failure triggered by it. I was hospitalized for 1 month and fully recovered now (I think). They took my off the drug for a few months (my body felt so "light" without having to consume those chemicals) but the tumor marker started coming back up and now I am on a different pill, which has less side effects but belongs to an older and slightly less effective generation. Whats tough for me is that I initially had hope. I believed everything would be fine, that one day my life would go back to normal. But the reality that things may not go as planned started to sink in since the hospitalization incident and this has really bothered me the past months. The fact that my work life is competitive/stressful (I choose this job so shouldn't be complaining), that my current pills can be fatiguing at times, that I live alone and cannot discuss my worries with anyone including colleagues/friends (some people walk away when they find out about my condition, so I stopped talking about it with people), has also been picking away at my mental armor. I think the key is to make peace with what may potentially come and I can really tell that has helped Pat improve her QOL. Maybe its time to truly face my emotions and maybe that will change the course of my life, however long that may be.

Angela Reed Jenny gave me so much strength. Took away so much fear. My daughter got me a bracelet with the words "this too shall pass". When I started following Jenny I had a scare from a lung exam. I followed her whole journey. I miss her so much. She was so strong.

I am 52 and was diagnosed out of the gate stage four. Been one year I joined a dragon boat team and am going strong. Hopefully for awhile.

Yet we as a society think spending on the military ($700 billions) is a priority over Cancer research ($6 Billion)

@@Timbergal It sure seems that way doesn't it!!, but we have gone a long way, a hundred years ago there was nothing, now, we have over 100 chemo regimes, radiation, improved survival rates, my family member died with prostate cancer, not because of cancer and lived up 95!! but we need more money for research, instead of building billion dollar planes or war ships we need to redirects those funds towards cancer research!!

I have incurable leukemia among other things. The first time you’re told, it’s a real shock and the thought of missing the people and events around you are the hardest. I still have bouts of extreme sadness, but I get on with the time I have.
You are every strong. I have severe emphasema, I just WANT to live everyday to the most I can and I will meet the future with as much guts se I can.

i feel just about everything you do. i'm about your age, post chemo, metastic breast. will be in treatment til the end. makes life seem more precious. i love what you said about being in the process of living. living in the moment is a gift the cancer gave me. this is the best time of my life and i'm peaceful and happy. don't know where the disease will take me over time, but if i feel good today and am doing the things i choose to do, life is good.

I wonder if there's anyone out there who is going through what I am going through. My entire family abandoned and ghosted me after I became ill. And after years of me doing everything I could possibly do for them when I was able. I am so beyond devastated and no one seems to grasp how completely eviscerated I am. I haven't met anyone else this has happened to; I am completely disoriented all the time. I feel lost at sea or shipwrecked on a deserted island, that's the best way I can describe it.
