    Hi Pete. I was listening to the show on my way back from the airport. You have convinced me and after 8 years of flying fsx I can finally switch in to the smooth direction of p3d. The difference is something else. Thanks for the video. All the best !!

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm 62 years young and have been an FSX simmer since Adam was a flight simmer. About 4 months ago the computer I had died. So recently I've had a new high end computer built for the first time ever and I'm over the moon with the performance I'm getting. I installed FSX SE again and was confronted with the same old issues as always. You have convinced me to move onwards and upwards to P3D V4. I'm downloading it as I write this, as your synopsis of this platform has been so enlightening. It's going to be a whole new learning curve but from what I've seen and what you've described has convinced me to make the switch. You are a wealth of information and I thank you for all the work you do. You're enthusiasm for our hobby is infectious.
    Best regards
    Matthew

    Worth the wait Froogle. I am glad you did this video ! You can imagine , moving from FSX Gold Edition to P3D V4 for me was a big move, I am glad I waited for the right simulator to take the place of FSX. One thing I know you will love is the water feature. The water will reflect the aircraft which is a nice touch , but what really got me was the water reacting to weather and a 3D look rolling water leaping at the aircraft. WOW! Thanks again Cheers !

    Thank you Froogle, love seeing more fs content. But more importantly is I sense the love is back on your end as well. Myself and many others could feel the frustration you had toward flight simming and it is wonderful to see the passion again. Look forward to more content. Until next time...

    The licencing, right. That is indeed very clear on their website, but perhaps more people will readily buy the "correct" professional version when its price is appropriate. P3D is mainly just a hub to connect all the add-ons needed to fix all the missing features or the problems, it doesn't qualify for such a high price tag, period. In face of raising products like X-Plane 11, they will have to adjust their behavior anyway.

    • @lewisbloom
      @lewisbloom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      nofebak the price is a professional price and damn cheap tbh. To my knowledge xplane professional version for professional use is equal too if not more expensive than P3D. Remember this is the software being used the world over for flight training from ppl's to military.

    • @SteelBollocks
      @SteelBollocks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      really? he just explained that if the professional version was priced similar to the "game" version of this engine (like FSW) then it would open a huge can of legal garbage with Dovetail, because they are NOT legally allowed to be a direct competing product.
      It has to be marketed to education and training, which typically involves a price that casual computer nerds won't go for

    • @lachlangainey8452

    • @DennisMoore187
      @DennisMoore187 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @SteelBollocks: The price has nothing to do with legal stuff. The licensing terms per edition are important. It doesn't matter at all if the pro version costs 1 $ or 10000 $. As long as the licensing terms don't say it is meant for entertainment everything is fine.

    Thoroughly fascinating video. I was always told that in flight simulating, frame rate is not important - smoothness is, and that's what you're saying Prepar3d v4 is giving you. With all of the add ons you have installed, that's a big leap forward over FSX where I'm still at.

  • @tf51d
    @tf51d 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This should be a lesson for all those screaming for something completely new vs making a 64bit version of it's existing sim with maybe a few additional features. P3D took the latter route, and came out with a sim as full featured as V3.x and kept making addons relatively easy to update, that most of the important ones are already compatible, and many others soon be. Now take the route DTG took with FSW, they seemed to go a sort of hybrid route. The engine is still FSX/ESP based, but they are changing core pieces of the sim to the point like moving to a GUI map based flightplanner, Weather is currently fixed, no dynamic weather, no simconnect addon support, limited to GA aircraft, (At least for now). This is similar to the way MS Flight was developed, and we all know how that turned out, and I fear FSW may end up the same way. Right now of the new 64bit sims. the only viable ones for the hardcore community right now is XP11, P3D V4, and for Military DCS World (IMHO).

    Finally made the move from V3- V4. With almost every good addon there is including $500 in Orbyx it took 8 hours. That included going to EVERY payware and downloading the latest. Only out of pocket was for V4 and upgrade to ActiveSky. Did some house cleaning and said BYE to all the dusty FSX ports and ones not flown.

      JIMJAMSC :D I just made the switch today from v3 to v4 and I smiled because all I had to pay out of pocket was for v4 and the Active Sky upgrade. Ughh, I’m DL everything as we speak lol

      What sucks is I moved my sim to a different hard drive... Gonna take me a month lol
      I wonder how many people buy orbx airports

    • @JIMJAMSC
      @JIMJAMSC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Been at it since Microprose F-119 in my early 20s and now at 54 I am about done with the tweaking. I have probably a grand in addons on P3D and have not played in in 3 months. I am 100% into DCS VR. My SSD is full so I deleted close to $500 in Orbyx and another $200 in weather, clouds. A realistic figure for just addons since FS9 would be $10 grand. Just on DCS I have spent $500. Its a addiction and I compare simming to frying bacon nude. Since losing my medical and injuring my back in a heli simming is really my only outlet.

    • @eastonwilliams1722
      @eastonwilliams1722 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JIMJAMSC Same here, I haven't flown in P3D in months, and neither DCS. DCS killed my FPS with their lighting update so I basically blew $500 on it. I think I have $1000 at least in P3D but I love it and am starting to develop airports for it.
      I don't think it should cost so much, the sim alone should include the weather you have to buy, and I imagine at least one good aircraft. If there is one thing P3D and all of the flight Sims disappoint me in it's the fact that they're still in the past and don't innovate.

    • @eastonwilliams1722
      @eastonwilliams1722 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JIMJAMSC I guess a highlight of all of the add ons is that you can choose what you want. In many cases they cost a LOT though.

  • @robainscough

    RAW Input is actually also available in P3D V3 ;) You'll need to calibrate ALL your devices in P3D (even if you import, you'll still need to calibrate) and be sure to set sensitivity to 127 to 1. Odd that you have AA set to None? Are you managing AA via nVidia Inspector? Oh and yes, if you turned on ILS aid it would have been easier to find the intercept ... and yes that feature was in P3D V3.4.

    If you want to navigate to a VOR station you can just center the VOR needle on the dial and keep it there by compensating left or right.

    • @isuckatsoldering6554
      @isuckatsoldering6554 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darren K What a strange reason to not help.
      He's trying do navigate to a VOR. Presumably he thought of that spot as a nice place to show off features of the sim.
      Whatever the reason, he was having trouble. So I'm trying to help him.
      He can use that knowledge going forward, and so can anyone else reading my comment. But the scope of this video wasn't specifically navigation, so I shouldn't help?
      Strange way of thinking.

    The 64bit advantage, was what I always thought, was to kill the notorious "out of memory" error, especially with mods loaded, long haul flights and large citys DESPITE having decent FPS, are almost non playable for much of the player base, but sorry just heard you touch on this.

  • @Avantime

    The more GPU-dependent a sim is, the better the performance you'll get over time. That's because graphics card performance gets much better with successive generations compared to CPUs, where mobile-based considerations, like power saving, are becoming increasingly important.

    Still to this day the A2A Piper Cherokee is my favorite GA aircraft available for Prepar3d. There's just something to It that I came to love. But moving to subject in matter, I think that LM did a great job going 64 Bit and however invested on that platform got exactly what they paid for from having all their add ons quickly being updated to new version to the peace in my and that the security of having a major error is now substantially smaller than before. Allthough with all that being said, when It comes to new costumers I cannot see how P3D would have the edge over XP11 with a better "out of the box" sim overall, which has excellent visuals in general, better physics in default aircraft and with a much stronger freeware comunity. So in conclusion, I would not even think twice IF I HAD TO CHOOSE, to pick P3D If I previously spent any money on It but as a new costumer I think Laminar has quite an edge with their sim and unless LM has a trick up their sleeves that should be maintaned. In general, all we enthusiasts should be pretty happy on two major sims getting to the lever on which their are getting and it suggests a brilliant future for flight sims.

    Read all about what top framerates monitors are capable of. ( If you haven't already ) It's apparently around 60 fps, unless you have a faster 120hz monitor.
    Of course our GPUs can do much, much more. But anything over that, starts smearing 1/2 frames into your full frames.
    Anything much above 80 fps on a 60 fps capable monitor starts actually degrading into diminishing returns of screen quality. No?
    I've been playing games at over 100 fps for years, until, I recently found out the truth. LOL!
    Fantastic Video! Thanks for this important deep dive, into Prepar3D v4! Everyone interested should consider this excellent presentation.

    The shadows moving across the flight deck at 17:00 are much better than X-Plane 11's harsh, contrasty, unrealistic, shadows. XP 11 reflections are also annoying and unrealistic, they make glass instruments hard to read, creating a huge performance hit and very little benefit. I am a long time user of XP and real world pilot and will most likely be moving to P3D.

    I haven't had issues with OOM's so as it stands I think the V4 upgrade cost/benefit ratio would be quite bad, so V3 will have to do for the time being. I guess XP11 might be a more interesting upgrade at the moment, as I do enjoy both sims.

    • @4IN14094
      @4IN14094 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LobsterminatorX TBH the cost vs benefit ratios from V2 to V3 is worse. OMM problem is too persistent for most people except for a few luck people that going from V2 to V4 or even V3 to V4 seems like a huge jump of stability thanks to better memory management. The only problem P3D have is that ESP, while a proven platform, seems lacking in terms of advanced simulation when compared to XP, BUT, what XP really lacks is developers who were willing to push their products to the absolute limit of XP for the most realistic as possible.

    -Does the game come with jets? (737,747,Learjet,etc.)

    -How much money does it cost?

    Pretty good video. I especially like your stand point on the licence and 64 bits. For the first one I really hate about everywhere those people just saying to get one or the other instead or just very simply direct to the prepar3d page and let people make their own decision.
    And the same on 64 bits, as a developer I knew as PMDG's Kyle stated that it just meant the box was bigger to put things in and that it was all that 64 bits specifically brought, no more no less, anyt other stuff is engine developement :)
    I'm quite happy having made the jump to v4 though I don't have the v3 view you had simply because I was still on FSX before v4, I had awaited this v4 to actually see how developers would follow to 64 bits :)
    The only point is the night which I think is definitely better than FSX, and so I can imagine than v3. But I still think that right now at this very moment, the night winner is really XP even in version 10 I've not seen a simulator beat it out of the box or with addons. The rendition of the lights is just stunning, and I don't think P3D is as good as that yet. It's better but it still seem very bright outside while the night is full :p
    But other than that I'm quite sure P3D if they really want to go a step forward should really plan to get things done from scratch, because no matter how much they tweak it the engine still is based on a decade old base technology and lots of things have changed, ESP at the base was not even planned for multicore which is really the norm, and I really think they are getting at the point were it will become harder and harder to make improvements.
    Just like Graphic API (DirectX/OpenGL) reached a point where they were actually limiting the developers doing a lot of housekeeping stuff eating lot of CPU, while now we are slowly going to graphical application using the best of the power available with DirectX12/Vulkan.
    But it's definitely an interesting time, and just as you I had been flying quite a lot less, and now I'm flying quite a bit more since P3D, and also XP11, I'm just waiting for PMDG level of quality addons on X-Plane which is my main disappointement with the platform so far, as there are addons but developers are I'd say less mature, and you often get, advanced version, pro version or even v2 versions making it really difficult to know which is the best. With IXEG being one exception which I really await to be compatible on V11.

    I personally have not found CPU optimization to be great TBH at stock my core 0 was at 100% now I know one CPU is always used more in every sim/game but expected it to be a little more balanced,I had the exact same crash on startup and did suspect the orb weaver so thanks for clearing that issue up and I have to agree if ur into FS get both sims I am gonna upgrade my HDD so it can accomidate xplane11 and P3D all in all good 1st look and very fair well done Froogle

    Also love the LOD on v4 You could say it does perform better because if you increased the LOD in v3 to what you see in v4 then it would be a stuttering mess on all but hard core systems

    I've used FS9, FSX (+tons of addons) and P3D for almost 10 years and I put big hopes into P3D v4. Now as it's released I'm pretty disappointed that I can only take advantage of the new versions features by buying even more addons which make use of the 64bit architecture. As a result I "switched" to Xplane11 last week and I have to say in terms of graphics it outperforms the other sims in nearly every aspect. Paired with the freeware scenery and textures created by the community and one or two (!) payware addons it looks and performs absolutely amazing. The only thing that keeps me coming back to P3D right now is the lack of study-level modern airliners in Xplane (I love the PMDG and FSL products). After all I really want to encourage all of you to at least take a look at Xplane11 (free demo available) and decide afterwards wether to buy or not to buy P3D v4.

    Love the videos and your channel, have been watching them for quite a while. In a more recent video, you mentioned your conclusion is that primarily only 2 flight sims really stand out to you as we move forward: Prepar3d and Xplane. After watching your comparison videos and others, I have decided that xplane 11 is what i will be moving over to (from 7+ years of FSX). Why is it that if xplane 11 is one of the guys to go to, we're seeing much of the developments and "big-boy" add-ons (like A2a and pmdg) not available for xplane 11? Same thing (to a certain extent) for Carenado. Kind of bugs me that I am deciding to go with Xplane 11, yet everything is being developed for Prepar3d. What's the future of 3rd party add-one for Xplane? As always, love your work, keep it up, we're all learning a lot from you. Thanks!

    Really liked this video, a fair and in my opinion an unbiased review. But I have a question. If you buy Prepar3d and you have a conscience it is $200, X Plane is $59. If you had NOT invested in add ons for Prepar3d would you still have bought it? I know you said get both, but your average Joe can not afford to get both and all the add ons.

    Hi Froogle, Long time fan and thanks for the hard work you do!
    Great video on Prepar3d V4, I don't know if I'm out of line
    but with all these improvements in flight simulation in
    eye candy why can't we still not simulate icing?
    Hope you can explain the reason why in a video.
    Thank you Froogle
    P.S. Don't know if carb ice is even simulated right, is it?

    There is a circle on concrete TWY Alpha at about 4:52. It has a triangle pointing North with a 3 in it. Look on Google Maps if necessary. What the heck are those Circle and triangles? They are not VOR checkpoints as, KSNA only has VOT.

    64-bit, yay!! Another flight sim dragged kicking and screaming into the 1st decade of the 21st century!
    And people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for this???
    I suppose I should add to that by asking whether a patch to add a technological innovation from the early naughties plus volumetric clouds to the same decades-old recycled code being sold as a completely new, full price product strikes anyone else as a bit of a ripoff?
    I don't do flightsims any more but if I did I'd be opting for the piratebay license on this one. Can't understand why people are willing to pay time and time and time again for the same old obsolete code . It's no wonder that the sim community is saddled with 3 different flavours of the same polished turd. Why would anyone go to the the trouble to design a new sim engine from the ground up to make use of modern technology when it's so easy to just repackage and sell the same old crap to people who have already bought it half a dozen times.

    Hello Froogle,
    Very nice video and very clear explanations.
    But I still have a question. What does "entertainment" mean ?
    I mean, the second you play P3D, you are entertaining yourself.
    Unless you are a real life pilot training for a situation that could occur in real life, you are playing the sim for entertainment...
    Does that mean that people playing with P3D are actually doing something "illegal" or more like out of the User's agreement ?
    And aren't you actually using this sim for entertainment ? In this video, you're not training for a real world flight, or simulating something you saw in real life. You are actually just playing...
    If that is the only way for Lockheed Martin to bypass the non-entertainment licence ESP they have, then good for them,
    but it is actually very blurry what they mean by "not for entertainment purposes"...

    Froogle, hello! Long time since I last commented on one of your videos. As one of the few people I genuinely trust the opinion is P3D V4 now suitably supported to make the jump over? I have hung back and given the devs some time to get their products compatible. I've seen comments from PMDG's RR (someone I also have great respect of) that some devs might not be properly updating their products, as in not properly changing where their code is installed to take advantage of LM changes where by you don't need to completely reinstall the sim for updates in future. Any opinions on this?

    have you seen some company has developed a new api called Vulcan which they say will improve fps a lot as it's same as direct x etc! Looks interesting!

    • @xTheZapper
      @xTheZapper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lilly Sims - you mean Vulkan, with a 'k'. It's not some company, it's the Khronos group who managed the development of OpenGL. Vulkan is the new version of OpenGL, and as such is not the same as DirectX more like the strongest competition. You can't just drop it into a game and expect the fps to go up, it requires a complete rewrite of the graphics engine.

    You have explained everything perfectly and I thank you. Accordingly and going along with the KISS principle, my system is elderly(like the owner) and needs an upgrade or replacement. Presently I am operating a i7-2600, 3.40, 12GB 64 bit with a GTX 650. I am enjoying P3Dv4 after many many years with FSX, even though my system is old. Primarily because I am not suffering from the OOM. I would appreciate any advice you could give me as to upgrade. Again thank you.

    Very nice video. I have both FSX and FSW and I am currently making videos following the development of FSW. I completely agree with everything you have said, particularly with regards to the 64 bit holy grail and how there needs to be work elsewhere to allow the sim to have full use of what we have in terms of our multicore processors, GPUs, etc.
    When you said you never had to tweak the config files and sliders seemed to do everything you needed, do you think there are still lines in there that would definitely help improve the sim in a fashion that is noticeable or would any config tweaks in V4 just be not worth the time? I'm guessing many simmers who have been playing around with config lines for a decade or more would be interested in that, myself included as in FSW I have found I still need to tweak the lines (not that they improve things too much yet...)
