This movie is basically the License to Kill of Batman. Shit hits the fan very quick into the movie once Selena's pushed out the window. Selena's sanity slowly declines throughout the film (from Selena completely destroying her apartment once she gets home after surviving a fall out the window to the point where she even admits she doesn't even know who she is anymore when she meets up with Bruce at Shreck's dance party), Batman's framed and almost killed in his own vehicle by the Penguin (although Batman does clear up his name), Shreck's corpse is traumatizing, and the Penguin's death is just heartbreaking and is probably the saddest villain death in movie history.
This is my favorite of the 1989 - 1997 Batman films. I like that it was set at Christmas time & Bruce was more of a character. Does a lot of it make sense? No, but damn was it fun!
I really wish Batman had saved The Ice Princess, but that was never going to happen because the writer, Daniel Waters, admitted in a podcast that he conceived the whole frame-up sequence backwards, starting with the idea of a person falling to their doom and hitting a tree-lighting button (he also suggested that he made The Ice Princess 'unsympathetic' so no one would feel too bad about her death, but judging from other people's comments, he didn't succeed in doing that, and simply making a character ultra-stupid doesn't necessarily make them contemptible).
The part with Catwoman being resurrected by cats reminds me of another bad superhero movie, Catwoman. Also I personally don’t like this movie either. I get what they mean about themes but that is a big Death of the Author problem. Like you mentioned in your review of Metroid Other M, Intent and Execution are two different things.

I remember watching your video on Metroid: Other M and you talked about characters we are meant to despise, and ones we were meant to like, but hate. But what are your thoughts on characters we are supposed to hate at first but then start to like later? Btw good video.
I guess Rufus from Street Fighter 4 is a good example. I assume he was meant to be seen as a loudmouthed jerk, but he's also one of the most animated characters in that game.
Do you think the circus performers were bad guys? I sympathised with them. They were outcasts marginalised by society. They were clearly extremely intelligent (judging by their tech skills), but, for whatever reason, they were excluded from regular employment, and they were thus lashing out at Gotham's capitalist society.
Let’s be honest Tim burton basically ripped off the penguins backstory from Killer Croc. I really feel like Batman returns was the first truly bad Batman movie and is what started the rot of the classic Batman movie franchise.

Please don't hate me for this, but I actually like this way more than the first movie, well, it's kind of mixed but I prefer Returns more.

I just watch this film yesterday to see how it holds up as a kid (and yes I watch this film when I was a little kid “best parents :)”

Batman Returns is good *in its niche category*. As a mainstream Batman movie, it can be alienating.
