  • The 2022 ISRA Slot Car #worldchampionships are nearly upon us. I am off to Latvia soon to compete. I have started my preparation and wanted to share these tips about preparing for some of the races.
    If you have #races where you have to use "handout" #chassis and #motors then there are some tips for you in this video.
    I have also included footage of the #track that will be used for the world championships and you can see a #qualifying run by one of the top teams.
    Here are some AMAZON links to the tools used in this video. As an Amazon Associate I earn a very small amount from qualifying purchases...

    Wow, those cars were seriously moving.
    Had a huge scalextric setup as a kid, had no idea things had progressed so much
    What actual speed are these cars doing ?

    • @CleaveTech
      @CleaveTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some types of cars can easily reach 70mph on the straights. With most types of slot racing, it is not just the top speed that matters, it is cornering speed that is most important.

    What axles are those?

    • @CleaveTech
      @CleaveTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use 3/32 Vitula axles for my 1/24 slot cars.

    Back in the 1980's era, when I raced Wing cars, we all would have axles with setscrew gears mounted to them on our cars and in our pit boxes. When checking the axles for run out I noticed that the setscrew gears would bend the axles. To counter this I would bend my axle and mark it so I knew where to position the setscrew when tightening the gears in place.

      Good point 👍🏻. In my past before I used to glue in the gears, I sometimes was able to use the grub screw to help straighten a bent axle. I didn’t deliberately bend it in the first place though 😂.

      @Slotcartires 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CleaveTech There was an effort to run two setscrews back then as well. With some fooling around you could avoid bending the axle as well as helping to balance the rear axle assembly somewhat.

      I recently built a plastic bodied car that came with 2 set screws in each wheel and the gear. Seems like the trend continued 😉😁.

      @@Slotcartires Yeah, we used to do the "Two Grub Dance" here in Hollywood with those pink gears. Also helped if you stripped the threads in one hole.

    Would it help if the gear had two set screws on opposite sides of the axle which would apply force from two directions - hopefully cancelling each other out?

    • @CleaveTech
      @CleaveTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      You raise a good point and some of the hard body slot car manufacturers use 2 opposite grub screws. The problem with using 2 grub screws is that the gear or hub is then pivoting about the tips of the two set screws and will probably not be running very true to the axle.

      I maybe start a 45minute race with tyres at 17mm diameter. 👍🏻 It can depend on the type of tyre used; some tyres wear down quite quickly, whilst others hardly wear.

    Alot of classes don't allow gluing gears on, as in ISRA.
    In some setups it's a major to get a glue gear and axle out without removing the motor.

    • @CleaveTech
      @CleaveTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know of people who have used glued on gears in F1 and have used glue on angled gears 😁. A bit of a nightmare to remove though!
