The good news is my Ranger is still under warranty.. 100 dollar Deductable and they can have at it! Nice video ..Love your humor..Ya know your stuff plus you saved many a lot of money! Thx
I HAVE AN 87 TOYOTA MR2 THAT RUNS PERFECT BUT ANYTIME I WANT TO DRIVE IT I HAVE TO ADD HALF A QT.I KNEW THAT IT NEEDED THIS SEAL,BUT YOU JUST TOOK A DIFFICULT JOB AND MADE IT LOOK SIMPLE AND EASY.I THINK IM READY TO TRY IT.I LEAVE A PUDDLE IN EVERY PARKING SPOT I GO TO SO MY WHOLE TOWN THANKS YOU.
Found this video looking for info on how to replace a CAT C-13 crankshaft seal. Left with some decent (unrelated) knowledge and thoroughly entertained. Liked and subbed. Love the grunts.
for that one, try a bottle of AT 205 reseal in the engine oil, it can seal em since you already had it changed, it may not be too cracked. Amazon sells the stuff, it can be hard to find
you put the crank on the top dead center mark, and pray that's right. if not, turn the engine one more rotation around. Set the dist to point at number one spark plug position when you have it set up
Hey cool to see this vid, i just a couple of days ago changed mine on my Peugeot 205 from 1990 But it was the seal behind the flywheel so i had to get the gearbox, starter, gear linkage, clutch, driveshafts and flywheel off before i could get to it. Quitte a fun job to do, it took my about a day together with a buddy of mine. Greetings from Holland and keep up the good work.
you lock the flywheel with a special tool, or in this case just tighten it in gear cause it was a standard transmission. Can't do that with an automatic though
Is it imperative to grease the inner part of the new seal? The outer part? What type of greases are acceptable to use? Some people use "silicone" around the outside of the seal? what type of silicone product would that have to be? And just one more thing, If a timing belt does not have directional arrows, is it safe to assume that it can be placed either way? Thank the lord (or science) for people like you! Again I say, hope you make millions!
I took my car to a commercial auto repair shop. They said they couldn’t find the leak and advised me to take it to the dealership for repairs. My girlfriends dad took a look at it and immediately knew to replace the crank shaft seal. No more oil leak.
lifters on those are VERY weak, but have the battery tested and the starter and replace either if bad, that can cause slow cranking. But if they are OK, then your engine is just flat wearing out with worn timing chain and other internal parts.

Great video. All of Scotty's videos are entertaining. About to do this on my 2000 Camry since the timing belt broke and it's leaking. Make sure you get good quality brand parts, that way you only have to do the job once.
often worn bearings do lower pressure like that, but realize any worn engine oil passageways can drop oil pressure. Pretty much educated guesswork when taking the engine apart until you start measuring everything. that's what plastigauge is for
It's not the vehicle manufacturer that matters, it is really the previous maintenance that really makes a difference. If the previous owner never did oil change regularly, the car won't be reliable no matter how well made it is. I bought 99 Toyota Corolla with 100K miles& the car was abused by the previous owner. Now, it's having rear main seal leak& I have to put a few quarts of oil into engine every month. To replace the rear main seal, you gotta pull the transmission, which costs about $1000
Scotty, you are the greatest! Also, you sound just like Rod Stewart (at 2:44) when you say,"...and you just tug on it, and it comes right out!" Cracks me up!
depends on how it was taken care of. Just don't pay much for one with that kind of mileage on it, things will break being that old. They are decent cars for the most part.
unplug the electrical connection at the AC compressor clutch that supplies it power. Then it can't run, and if the problem stops, compressor is weak or AC system has internal blockage
tons of things can do that, so first, have the battery load tested, places like auto zone do that free. As can a weak starter, which can also be load tested.
engine oil is used to lube the inner part. realize any grease you put on would quickly just fly off anyway. Yes, timing belts can go either way if they don't have directional arrows on them
I bought my 1999 taurus with 176,000 on it for $400. Transmission went out at 202,000. Luckily a junkyard had a transmission for $350, and engine is still running perfectly at 217,000 miles. best $750 i have ever spent.
as tight as I could get it. And often you can put some locktite bolt sealer on the end, then quick tighten it and that will set it tight so it won't come off.
you need a special tool to put on the flywheel to do that in an automatic transmission. But this was a standard so I just left it in gear with the parking brake on.
Hey Scotty nice video , would you be able to give any advice my car is leaking oil but can’t figure out what exactly is going on PLEASE HELP ME. It’s a honda accord LX 2000 and i really want to know what’s going on with my car i’ve been to many mechanic and so far you’re the only one i trust. Thanks sincerely Jonathan.
you made that seal change look so easy, i'm sure it is, haven't done one on that make yet, but i was wondering, when you tightened the crank bolt back on, what were you using to keep the crank from turning. i understood the loosening, but with out locking the flywheel i'm tying to understand how you got the bolt tight. you mentioned taking the rad out to use the impact gun, usually when i do them i go that way for loosening and tightening, makes it easier in a way.
fan running is normal with AC on. Volvos pretty much have crappy ac systems as they age, it doesn't get too hot in sweden ever. but the compressors are know weaknesses, yours is probably on its last legs being that old
Great instruction mate, We are working on this fault on a 2002 mondeo tdci 1,8. I guess that it is the same thing we have to do on that motor. Thank's mate.
I bought a Corolla with 100k. Put ~55 on it so far without any major problems. The only real problems I've had so far are a bad intake manifold gasket ($10) and a bad automatic tensioner ($75 off amazon). Very easy to work on yourself, too.
I personally use AT 205 reseal for that, damages nothing. But of course the seal can't be completely shot and torn, which you can't tell, so it is a gamble.
Scotty, if the book time for a repair is 2.4 hours and the mechanic does it in 1.5 hours because they are experienced with my model car and very familiar with the procedure can they charge me the full 2.4 hours in labor? What if they had 2 techs working on it? Thank you, great video as always.
I know Scotty is right about many things and I hate to knock him but please don't follow this video even if you have the same car. He should at least mention differences in cars and pullers and various tools. You can easily find yourself halfway through this process and without the proper tools to finish. It leaves out some things that need to be done and I hope he did them off camera. This procedure is different depending on the vehicle but even here on this car he missed important steps. Most notably to me was not cleaning the balancer/pulley. Do you see the back of the pulley that actually makes contact with and slides into the new seal? You need to clean that up with an emery cloth or at least a scotch brite. That's burned/cooked oil residue that can and will ruin your new seal. There's a real good chance that it may start leaking again in a few weeks or months.

Scotty Kilmer i wish the mechanics i take my car to were as clued up as you
Man scotty you make everything look so easy
Scotty Kilmer youre awesome!
Common sense. The most difficult to obtain
Can I use the 205 reseal to stop a crankshaft seal leak?
He makes it look super easy. He did it all in three minutes. It would take me seven days working eight hours a day.
I do wish he included the time it took him and added some more detailed information for us non-experts to pay attention to!
that sounds like about how long it takes me not mention a really sore back
:D
Youd make a fine city mechanic
Lol
Oh man hearing Scotty go “Uh!” when wrenching something never gets old 🤣
this was a standard, so I locked it in gear. If an automatic, you need a flywheel locking tool to do that
Out of all the Scotty Kilmer video's I've watched over the year's. This is the only time I've seen Scotty without his sunglasses on.
Oh and thanks Scotty, I have this very leak now on my 2003 Tacoma 4 cylinder. This looks easy to do. Thanks again for all these videos!
did you do it?
The good news is my Ranger is still under warranty.. 100 dollar Deductable and they can have at it! Nice video ..Love your humor..Ya know your stuff plus you saved many a lot of money!

if an automatic transmission, you need a flywheel locking tool to do it, or an air impact wrench
After 46 years of doing this, he makes it sound so easy. Man, it ain't!
Haha anytime I see a video with him I watch it just love his energy
When fixing a car I always go to Scotty Kilmer first. He gets to point and makes it plain and simple.
Thank you Scotty, I have been my own mechanic since this ripoff!
Your videos are the best on YT..Thank you Sir Scotty!
for that one, try a bottle of AT 205 reseal in the engine oil, it can seal em since you already had it changed, it may not be too cracked. Amazon sells the stuff, it can be hard to find
Scotty you are the man, your videos have helped me out so much; always straight to the point.
you put the crank on the top dead center mark, and pray that's right. if not, turn the engine one more rotation around. Set the dist to point at number one spark plug position when you have it set up
yes, most mechanics go straight by the labor hour charge rate no matter how fast they can actually do the job.
That is the greatest tip on removing the crankshaft bolt. You are the greatest!

Wonderful video. Not for bmw. You should never remove pulley bolt off from crankshaft while doing a bmw.
Great video. All of Scotty's videos are entertaining. About to do this on my 2000 Camry since the timing belt broke and it's leaking. Make sure you get good quality brand parts, that way you only have to do the job once.

Scotty you are a legend my friend thanks for the tips
I've got a toyota avensis d4d diesel which is leaking might gave a go myself . Love the videos Scott keep up the great work
Thanks My Brother. Every other video I seen was about rebuilding an engine. Easier then I thought.
You are the best at quick explanations with car fixes. keep it up!!!

Love watching your videos. Not all inclusive, but enough info to know whether I should tackle the job or not. Thanks for the help the past few weeks!

often a leaking cam seal will do that and on many models you have to take the cam off to replace the inner cam seal.
this DIY Method is very Crude and Raises questions of safety into concern.
So, you have an annoying crankshaft seal oil leak... Fix-it-yourself!
Thank you, Scotty!! :-)
LoL WOW YOU"RE FAST!! You fixed a BIG JOB in 4 mins hehe :P
Magic!!
wish my supra was that easy to fix lol... awesome video, your maf video helped me out a lot too.
scotty, you are so entertaining. id watch you even if I didnt own a car
You're the man Scotty for the videos helping people save tons of money I know they all are appreciative....... Thanks again Scotty
yea, they weren't very popular due mainly to low horsepower engines. I would also replace cam seals and oil pump seals while you're in there.
generally put a new tension assembly on IF the belt is new
engine oil is used to lube the inner part. realize any grease you put on would quickly just fly off anyway. Yes, timing belts can go either way if they don't have directional arrows on them
What about silicone on the outside of the front main seal?
I just love this guys channel
generally one of the pulleys has a problem then, try to figure out which one using any listening device like a stethescope
you just saved me a lot of money thank you
yea, try AT 205 reseal, amazon sells it. otherwise, you have to pull everything off to get to the seals
Crank Pully / Harmonic Balancer Last time I had to change a seal I had to use a Balancer puller,I wish it came off that easy !
I bought my 1999 taurus with 176,000 on it for $400. Transmission went out at 202,000. Luckily a junkyard had a transmission for $350, and engine is still running perfectly at 217,000 miles. best $750 i have ever spent.
You are the best Scotty Kilmer !!!
Scotty Kilmer, thank you so much for your help,we will try and get that done as soon as possible.
about half an hour for each, but the shooting really depends on the severity of the job, how long it actually takes to fix something.
as tight as I could get it. And often you can put some locktite bolt sealer on the end, then quick tighten it and that will set it tight so it won't come off.
2:03 the first time I have every seen Scotty without glasses!
you need a special tool to put on the flywheel to do that in an automatic transmission. But this was a standard so I just left it in gear with the parking brake on.
Scottykilmer@gmail.com
U make it look so easy
Because he has more than 40 years of experiences fixing cars, he knows inside and out of the cars.
TheMiddleKingdom and yet he does a couple things no professional mechanic should
on that car it is., on many IT ISNT
The power of video editing!!
you run the engine and look as the crankshaft pulley. It will either spin to the right, being clockwise, or spin the other direction.
interesting method with using the engine to pop the bolt. i like it!
How do you replace the rear seal .Thanking you a lot on your wise counsel on very special issues.
cool that you take time to teach people
once again the greatest most informative channel on the youtubes! thanks Scotty:) your the best.
Thank god for TH-cam car guys!
timing belt systems are as you describe, but this is a timing chain engine, so the seal is on the outside.
yes, this thing's old, so it has fan driven by belts. Newer cars call em serpentine or drive belts.
Great shows - all of them. As for crankshaft bolt on a engine that turns counter clockwise, just put the breaker bar on the other side of the frame.
Thanks sincerely Jonathan.
electrical short somewhere, check the brake light sockets first they may be corroded
Toyotas are so amazingly reliable, gotta love em
this one has a groove with a key on the crank, so it only fits on one way
this was a standard, I just put it in gear. But if an automatic, you must somehow lock the flywheel from turning, they make tools for that
it can blow out engine oil seals and if really overfilled, bend piston rods
Always great videos informative and entertaining.thanks for taking the time to record and upload the video.waving hi from central illinois
I actually do, but I wasn't using it. A canadian front was blowing through yesterday.
you made that seal change look so easy, i'm sure it is, haven't done one on that make yet, but i was wondering, when you tightened the crank bolt back on, what were you using to keep the crank from turning. i understood the loosening, but with out locking the flywheel i'm tying to understand how you got the bolt tight. you mentioned taking the rad out to use the impact gun, usually when i do them i go that way for loosening and tightening, makes it easier in a way.
guys used to try selling em, but they weren't too popular.
scottykilmer. thanks for posting really informative videos about cars. your videos help a lot of people! thanks again
i know it well, if it plays in peoria it will play anywhere, lol, thanks for taking the time to respond, waving hi from central illinois, ken
scotty is the man
often leaking valve cover gaskets do that, as they are on the top. Oil leaks down
fan running is normal with AC on.
Thank's mate.
try AT 205 reseal, often stops em, hard to find, I use amazon to buy it
You sure made that look easy. I have to do this on a first gen 350 chevy. I think I need a pulley puller to get it off.
I bought a Corolla with 100k. Put ~55 on it so far without any major problems. The only real problems I've had so far are a bad intake manifold gasket ($10) and a bad automatic tensioner ($75 off amazon). Very easy to work on yourself, too.
I'd do that in an afternoon for a case of beer. haha It's not that bad of a job. Scotty should do a video on that! 22r's are quite popular engines.
I personally use AT 205 reseal for that, damages nothing. But of course the seal can't be completely shot and torn, which you can't tell, so it is a gamble.
On newer cars, you have to switch to off very fast, as the starter will continue to crank even if you let go of the key and start the engine!
any of those Mother products (mother is a brand name, auto zones and many stores carry them.)
depends who's doing it an what kind of vehicle. This was an easy one
Scotty, if the book time for a repair is 2.4 hours and the mechanic does it in 1.5 hours because they are experienced with my model car and very familiar with the procedure can they charge me the full 2.4 hours in labor? What if they had 2 techs working on it? Thank you, great video as always.
yes, it often can. But not in this case, it was too old and cracked.
I know Scotty is right about many things and I hate to knock him but please don't follow this video even if you have the same car.
