I’d love to see you use a 2017 or 2019 iMac (or similar) as a baseline to show us how fast these are compared to what a lot of folks would be upgrading from. It would be interesting to see.
That M2 Max Studio seems to be the perfect computer for a lot of people, myself included. Not crazy expensive and very powerful. Really good for at home music production or video editing.

I’d think most folks would find the Mac Mini overpowered for their general use. How often are ordinary people really doing intensive tasks, and since even the base model can handle this without stuttering, and it’s only a trade off on time, this just seems like a great deal for most. If you do more heavy lifting, completely agree with the Studio. I just think most people don’t end up doing as much as they think they will when they are shopping…
No the M2 mini or M2 pro mini is plenty powerful for many people who aren’t editing 8k video or exporting 150 photos with filters. Don’t buy an expensive Mac Studio if you don’t need it.
For home music production, the base M1 with 16gb ram is plenty. Worse case, in case you use a gazillion plugins, the M2 with 24gb ram.
The mini is fine for “now”. 5 years from now you will be happy you spent the extra $700.
Great video comparison. Still happy with my M2 Pro Mac Mini 10-16, 16GB, 2TB purchased in March 2023. I have it hidden out of the way behind my desk which I could not do with the Studio. When my needs change I will consider the Mac Studio.

Would love to see a comparison between the M2 Max and ultra, and also how they compare with the M1 ultra.
I’m currently working on a show that has 4 multicam tracks for a total of 50 hd cameras, 30 + audio tracks, layers of effects, subtitles, etc and the base Mac Studio M1 does the job pretty well.
I wound up going with the binned M2 Studio with a 1TB SSD. I was a bit surprised to see the lower SSD speeds, but I don't think it's anything I'll notice.

I still remember the shock at your teardown of the Mac Studio. I was expecting a Mac Mini with even more empty space (than the Mini) but the Studio was just crammed solid - incredibly technologically dense.
It did seem to me that the Studio was worth at least 3x the price of the Mini so if there are versions of both around $2k, there is only really one winner in terms of value for money considering design and hardware. Compared to the Mini, there is just so much 'stuff' in the Studio!
I mean the Mac mini is, just like the iMac, a laptop in a different case. So sad what Apple has done to those products. iMac used to be a true desktop machine but now it’s just a laptop.

Biggest issue i have with youtube content is, when the mini pro came out, i got the 12 core, 32g, 1tb version cost 2k. Only reason i got it was, all the youtube apple gurus said there would be no more mac studio upgrades, i really wanted a M2 64g studio. So now 4 or 5 months later the M2 studio come out , now i have to wait for a M3 studio, while i watch my mini pro sit at 100c or higher most of the day hoping it does not melt lol. When i use tgpro to max out the fan, it only drops the heat about 5 or 10c, but its still sort of quiet at 5k rpm. On the bright side , the mini pro fits in my carry on luggage if thats a use case , cant do that with the studio 😅
Thanks for doing this comparison. I got the Mac Pro mini binned but with 1Tb ssd. That is the sweet spot in bang for buck as a number of TH-camrs have said. And for the photo editing tasks I do it is great. If I did heavy video editing I’d get a Studio.
Tip: Buy the base Mac Studio with student discount and upgrade the ssd to 1tb. Thank me later! 😜

@@JimAllen-Persona My recommendation is don't. If you have not purchased yet, the 1 TB (for the speed for the main system and app drive) is all you need. Then get a cheaper external fast solid state for additional storage. Apple absolutely reams you on storage costs.

Great comparison, this has been on my mind since prior to the updated studios when weighing the difference between an m1 max studio vs m2 pro mini. I already have the base model Mac Studio so I don’t need to chose but always good to know.
The mini is epic to save 700$, but obviously the Studio is significantly better for power users.

For traders the more screens the better. I'm running a MB M1 Pro and I grew out of the native support for just 2 screens very quickly. It's jarring with the specs that I have that I'm not able to have 3+ screens without a circumvention. Looking to upgrade to a Studio M2 Max for this
I feel something is wrong with the Logic benchmark you’ve done - it can’t run only 180-181 tracks when even the M1 Pro computers easily run more. Have you selected the max cores and 1024 buffer per benchmark instructions? Thanks!

In the end you recommend rather not to upgrade the base models, however at 0:46 you show how an upgrade to 1TB storage is recommended in order to get twice the read/write performance.
Thanks for the comparison. I ended up getting the base Mini Pro as I don’t need an SD card slot and having ports on the back isn’t a big deal for my setup. I prefer a headset with built in mic for video calls and always use headphones for music because I live in an apartment and don’t want to bother the neighbours so the tinny speakers aren’t a problem either.
I watched a lot of videos before making the decision and didn’t find one that addressed my situation which is general computer use and a lot of video conferencing.
I tend to text, check email, browse the web, shop, bank, etc. from my phone these days and don’t need the portability I once did. My MacBook Pro has been gathering dust for the last five years. But now that I’m studying and working from home I need a good desktop setup where I might spend up to six hours a day on video calls where seeing and hearing others clearly is the most important thing.
I didn’t consider the iMac because I wanted to chose my own monitor, mouse and keyboard and to have the flexibility to change them. I guess my years of using Windows is showing.
I’m happy so far. The setup and data transfer went surprisingly fast over wi-fi (because I was too lazy to dig out an Ethernet or USB cable). My USB mouse and wired keyboard are really showing their age so I’ve ordered new Bluetooth ones. If I have any regrets it might be that I didn’t add more storage just in case I want to play with running the Windows OS. My apps and data are already taking up half the space so guess I’ll have to download some photos to external storage. Upgrading to a faster Ethernet might also future proof the device but the one on the base model should be fine for a few years.
Always my go to Mac reviewer in YT. Now that the M3 is out, I'd love to see your recommendations on it over the Mac Studios. Thanks in advance!
Audio tracks: the more RAM you have in your system the more tracks and plugins you can run at the same time. Seems that you need the Studio in that case.❤

Very nice comparison data. I am in the market for an upgraded Mac desktop and sure looks like the Mac Studio 1 TB 38 core GPU is the one to get since I do a lot of photo and video work. Also, sure am looking forward to the day that I can run full Madden on my Mac. I would like to hold out for a M3 Max Mac Studio which sure seems like it would be a major upgrade but that probably will not be here until 2025 which would be too long to wait.
I’m just looking for something to do some light day trading with and some excel modeling for daily fantasy sports… no editing or any of that fancy stuff. Is the studio worth it for me or is the mini pro enough?

Will a Mac mini pro with LG 5k - 27” ultra fine monitor be enough for photo editing/ post processing with occasional, but small 4K video editing.
I am strictly a hobbyist in bird photography.
In India the difference between M2 Pro Mac Mini & the base M2 Max Mac Studio is of 975USD. Even the base iPhone vs Pro Max price difference is huge here when compared to the US. So that is also what something most people should be keeping in mind as with Apple as far as the rest of the world is concerned, the upgrades are costlier.
In Canada we’re paying roughly 25% more because of the exchange rate then there’s 5% GST (service tax) and another 0-12% sales tax depending on the province you’re in so the upgrades cost a lot more.

The M2 pro Mac mini is still a good option with 1Tb ssd (£1599) though but if you really need the power then get a Studio.

Hi Max, we met a long time ago at Sony Camera Camp and I always value your opinion. My wife is now working with Apple and I can get a small discount and I want to purchase the Mac Mini with 16gb and 512 storage or the new base model of the Mac Studio. As you have said it comes out to about $700 difference and I don't edit all that much and don't do Photoshop or after effects. So Id really only need it for light video editing and day to day use.
On the other hand I don't want to upgrade for over 5 years so should i just spend the extra money and get the Mac Studio? I always get the warranty as well.

My recommendation would be yo get the mac mini pro with 1TB with 16gb
If you need bit more wiggle room, just upgrade to 32gb but it makes almost close to max studio , so go with max studio.
Otherwise the sweet spot 1TB ssd , 16GB Ram, base variant of m2 pro.
I am not a video editor. I am day trader using using 2-3 screens with many applications open/running at the same time PLUS I do daily Camtasia, screen capture, videos. I am currently on a Intel 27" iMac. Nearly ready to upgrade. I was hoping the NEW M3 iMac brought back the 27" but it didn't. SO... I am looking at mini/studio. Any advice???
I was using 4 monitors on my Studio but ran into a bug with one of my programs and so I had to drop to 3 monitors but I would normally use 4. I have a 5k iMac as the fourth screen right now.

I think the base iPad’s performance would meet most people’s needs for FB, web browsing, youtube etc. $400. Choose your computer wisely. Look at your needs. Don’t pay a lot of money for things you will never do with your computer. You do the above mentioned things but need a bigger screen and maybe MacOS? Then get the M1 Air. Then just go up from there depending what you do.
Does the studio still suffer from coil whine form the fan? my wifes M1 studio suffers from this.
The perfect config for 99% of users is the 10/16 core M2 Pro mini with 16gb RAM and 1tb SSD at $1499. You aren't limiting yourself with too little RAM or the 1/2 speed SSD, and you aren't overpaying for outrageously priced upgrades.
The $2199 Studio with 12/30, 32GB & 1TB SSD is the other logical point for people with really demanding workloads.
I'm still waiting for M2 iMacs and hoping that the M2 Pro from the Mini makes an appearance on that platform.

Logic is not only about CPU but memory amount, which makes the Mac Studio a better choice for professionals.
I want an all-in-one computer able to handle my main job activities (I'm a frontend developer and currently learning backend) and my TH-cam content, I do covers so I work with DAWs, plugins and do video editing therefore I need a lot of RAM and video processing.
Considering that you can't upgrade it later and probably change it after 5 years I'm thinking on get the Mac Studio M2 Max 12 cc 32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD

I had an iMac Pro which ran extremely silent for a year before it started to become very loud and perform slower (despite clean installs).
I wouldn't be surprised that Apple makes their fans run more idle than they should within the first year.
This allows them to get nice reviews when a product is launched and also to get less complaints the first year (while arguing that later on, it's the customer's fault).
I don't say that's what's happening for sure but here you have it : a preview saying that despite de 40°C difference, don't worry, you are fine.

I teach at a local university and do most word processing work. I might make a few 10 minute videos using Camtasia a dozen times a year and I use Canva to make things look pretty lol. No photo editing and heavy video editing.
The Mac Mini M2Pro with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage is $2244 with educational pricing. The Mac Studio M2 Max upgraded to 1TB is $2654.
I normally use my computers until they slow down enough they impact my workflow, so 6+ years.
Do you recommend the Mac mini M2 Pro to is it for the $410 to upgrade to the Studio based on the type of work I do?

yo good shit same boat man, i just ordered the m2 max 38 core 2tb 64 i do a lot of animation, editing, vfx mostly after effects premire and photoshop. so excited for it would love to hear how that improved it workflow!

Yes it’s better with 32 for most people. 400$ plus tax is a whole additional device like an iPad or iPhone or a nice external Nas. But if you know you need it, and can afford it, sure.
WHAT IF?!?! I already have an MBP M1 Max 32GB RAM for video editing on the go but looking to replace my M1 mini desktop for something more powerful than the MBP M1 Max... Im leaning to the M1 Ultra Studio but still on the fence with the M1 Max Studio. Just the MBP M1 Max is too good...

MAC Studio with 38 Cores & 1Tb is a nice performance at that price level
I just received my M2 Mac Studio.
I up graded to 38 gpu, 96 G of Ram and 1T of storage.
Looking too keep this machine for a while and edit Video. That is the reason for the upgrades.
