Love the videos and there's something great that comes from your simple setup. a couple of friends have had great luck with Apple Airpod Pros paired with an iPhone, over the Rode wireless mic. The benefit being they're lighter/simpler and have great noise cancellation, plus when you're not filming you've got a set of earbuds. They're not the most "pro" looking option, but then I think not being "pro" is what makes TH-cam (and your videos) so great. Not being slick and overly produced, run what you brung, all showing that sometimes things are hard, all wraps up to some excellent content.
I understand how some can be skeptical because they could never think of doing the same amount of work. Thanks for showing that it can be done. It just takes a lot of skill, effort, and fortitude.
Thanks Josh, for your great high quality videos. I also appreciate you’re editing skills and music choice. Keep up the good work! I’ve been cycling for 45 years, but thanks to you, only a few weeks ago for the first time, used my GoPro to make a short video of me cycling, including a shot where I left the GoPro at the side of the road to film my cycling by.
It takes lots of effort to go back and get your Iphone for every shot. Thank you for sharing your adventures, and your tips of how you put the movie together.
Thank you, Josh. I like to ride slow and take photos, solo. Up until now all of my touring shots have been static and of the bike or views where I ride and not adding interest or telling the story. But watching your excellent videos has inspired me to do better. Great work.
I get exactly the same comments mate! 😂 It takes forever setting up, but in honesty, I’d not enjoy it as much if someone else was filming it. It combines my two passions! Keep up the great videos mate! 👏
Really enjoyed this, just discovered how easy it is to edit on the iphone, and you’ve confirmed my suspicions that I’ve been wasting my time editing on the MacBook Air!!!
I've always used the drone remote without the joysticks, which seems to give me a better control for slow movements. Also it is one less step to get the drone ready during a ride.
You can use the drone instead of iphone in your static shot on the ground.. so you don't have to climb again to the phone .. just RTH it will came to you 😊
Thank you for showing your behind the scenes. It takes tons of effort going solo and documenting your rides. Love the commentary of how you make your videos.
Really interesting overview of your filming kit. Your videos are superb. I expect the main reason they are great is not the kit you use but that you have a great eye and are a natural filmmaker
Nice video showing all that doubling back on yourself to get those shots! The Rode Wireless Go mics *can* be used without the receiver unit plugged into the camera. In other words, you can use it as a standalone microphone and recorder. The downside is that you'll have to manually sync up the sound and images if you're doing a piece to camera. If you just want to record, you could use a Rode SmartLav or VideoMic Me microphone direct to your phone. But that may be an issue where you're shooting with your phone too. Another, perhaps better option, might be the Zoom F2. It's a tiny recorder that comes with an included lav mic. Clip the mic on and pop the tiny recorder in your jersey pocket. There's no connection to your phone or camera (although a slightly more expensive Bluetooth version allows you to control it from the phone), but if you just want a mic/recorder combo that's tiny and cheaper than the more fully-featured Rode Wireless Go, it's worth looking at. Again, you'll have to do manual syncing of the audio to video with it when you're doing pieces to camera.
Thank you for showing the footage where you come back and pick up the camera! Having been on multiple long rides and trying to film it, I can understand that it must be such a pain to do this when you want to get more kilometers under your belt as quickly as possible. Keep it up! And thanks for showing your process. 😄
Wow, that is an insane amount of work! And I must admit I don't know how do you do that on a push bike where your luggage is very limited! I have traveled to +40 countries on a motorcycle which offers a lot more space you can use to carry all your gear. Plus it gives me the freedom to charge all my devices (12v plug) while riding which proved to work well. You have my deepest respect for what you're doing!
Congrats on your hard work, the spectator can truly witness how difficult yet satisfying it is to create videos! I'm a content creator as well and I'm fascinated that you can edit everything just with your phone!
Great insight on how you do your videos Josh, must do plenty extra miles with going back to retrieve photo or putting phone out and riding into the shot.
I would recommend adding some sort fo 360 camera to the mix. The insta 360 can get rid of the pole you're holding it on, so you wont be relying on other cyclists to film to going along, and it wont have a big footprint on your already small setup.
awesome video Josh - I am starting to do some vlog style videos and have been experimenting with the exact same gear as you. I only knew that of course when I watched. Lovely video - well done.
Great to see the process, how you capture everything so beautifully. Really puts your hard work into perspective to watch you do it and I can't imagine editing so flawlessly on a phone screen too. Brilliant and inspiring (both your riding and creating)
Thanks for sharing this man. So much effort goes into those ride past the camera shots, especially since you're often leaving the camera at the top of a hill and then descending a long way! Worth it though. Keep up the great work!
Great video, thanks for a look at your behind the scenes. The simplicity of the iPhone is a reason I’m using it more and more in my bike riding video’s. Just whip it out of your back pocket and start recording. It’s also great for YT Shorts as you can video in portrait mode and immediately upload to YT from the iPhone. I’ve also used a 360 camera which is excellent for getting different perspectives with the same recording, there is a bit more editing work required with the 360 camera’s but i think it’s worth it. Keep up the great YT videos.
They should be busy watching the great content not accusing you of a camera crew. If you’d have had a camera crew do they think you’d have still carried your own stuff 🤣🤣🤣
This always kept me from shooting really good cinematic videos i guess. It would just suck to stop and think about good views etc. The hustle with making awesome footage. Can you really enjoy riding when you have to do all these "return rides" to pick up the cam and placing mobile phone on the ground and stuffing it back and taking out the drone and stuffing it back etc. This must be such a big big afford. So much work. I mean i really appreciate your work! It's awesome! But damn it... This still kind of holds me back a little. Thank you for the look behind. Cheers!
I'm sure someone may well have already said this in the comments but I'm 99% positive you don't need to connect the rode wireless go2 receiver to your phone as it has the capability to make internal recordings on the transmitter. You may need to go into the settings to enable/disable that but I'm pretty sure you can do it. Loads on vids on youtube about it. Loved the cycle home from china video. Wish I was brave enough (and 30 years younger)
For the mic, try the TASCAM DR-10L. It records the audio on an internal microSD card which you can sync to the video during the edit. It is also less visible.
I use basically the same equipment as you. Although yours is the newer versions. I use my phone, GoPro hero sessions 5 and DJI mini 2. I've had people ask me "who's filming you". They're surprised when I answer "just me".
Really nice! I have DJI osmo pocket 2 creator combo, iphone 13 Pro and just bough the DJI mini 3 for bargain. Can’t wait to film my trips in the upcoming summer 😊. Subbed!
Nice video. Recently I travelled from Munich to Milan by bike through the Swiss alps, and I had this issue with carrying a mirrorless camera. But the rest equipment is the same as you have. 😊
I love the democratising element of the iPhone, the SE model is especially cheap, and whilst the mic isn't great, the lens is superb. As you say, it provides its own edit suite and so with a little experimentation makes us all filmmakers. It is really a pocket computer with a vast array of bolt-on applications, and should have been called the iPod, not the iPhone. Doing away with a microphone makes you tell the story in the cut, Hitchcock would have approved of that. Is there any way of holding the iPhone in your mouth like the GoPro? That would free things up a treat.
Re mics question @ 6:28 @joshreidadventurer I used to use the Røde but swapped to the excellent DJI Mic. Costly, but worth it for all the innovation (neat things like the magnet you can use to simply attach to clothing, for example). You can record on the (smaller than the Røde) mics themselves, or plug the receiver into your iphone. If doing the former, a simple hand clap in front of the camera will easily allow you to sync audio and video. Curtis Judd has an in-depth video covering the DJI mics… th-cam.com/video/f_zOcqD-Jak/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting and informative, thanks. I am intending to up my video skills for my motorcycle rides. Presently, I use a few different cheap and cheerful Amazon action cameras which are really for any accident situations, but sifting through footage of the many rides this last summer, the quality of a GoPro would have made them even better. I need to decide on a GoPro/ DJI Osmo/ Insta 360 cam for my helmet and bike frame rear, and either a small quality digital camera or upgrade my phone for entering the frame type shots as you do. My Drone is the mk1 DJI Mini, and still does nice footage.....when I remember to press 'record', that is!
Very helpful video! Not a criticism but would be good if you listed the equipment you use as I had to backtrack a few times to catch what you were saying 😃
What a ball ache it all is. Kudos to you for taking the time and trouble. I wonder how many extra kms you notch up with your back and forth for the camera. Thanks for the videos!
Cool. Thanks. You may have mentioned this but what app / program do you use for editing on your iphone? As someone who likes a big screen for editing, I’m fascinated (and terrified) by this idea of editing on an iphone. I should try it to challenge myself (and to face my fears). Cool music also. Cheers.
Great video ...Thanks. As you have pointed out, or "we" have learned.....making great video requires a lot of work; especially doubling back to pick up the camera! Keep riding! DD
Nice video. I wonder, (maybe the lens isn't the right focal length for the shot), but had you thought of using your drone for those driveby shots on the ground? Then you could just fly it to you rather than having to ride back up the hill to fetch it!
Great video, dude. If you are so inclined, I’d really be interested in how you actually utilize your drone. What I mean is: from taking it out to getting it in flight, taking shots and landing it. I have a drone but I feel like 80% of the time I’m just messing around and about 20% getting actual video. I want to learn how to improve that. Regardless, thanks for sharing your tips.
Not familiar with the Rode, but the DJI mic allows you to record internally. You wouldn't need to attach the reveiver, but you do lose the ability to record the audio directly to the video though. But if anything, the DJI mic is smaller and more lightweight, at the expense of better sound quality.. Haha
I'd take it as a massive compliment folk 'accusing' you of using a crew. Your content is second to none 👏🏼
Love the videos and there's something great that comes from your simple setup. a couple of friends have had great luck with Apple Airpod Pros paired with an iPhone, over the Rode wireless mic. I love how much time and dedication you put into your work , it’s incredible!

Right now I use the Ulanzi J12 I think, a very small mic with a very small receiver which goes directly in your phone. No cables no hassle
One man crew! I can't wait to try some of these tricks out next time I'm filming!
Really enjoyed this, just discovered how easy it is to edit on the iphone, and you’ve confirmed my suspicions that I’ve been wasting my time editing on the MacBook Air!!!
Love your videos Josh, never an intro or outro, please don't change, it's so refreshing! Keep uploading
I often thought Steven Spielberg was following you in a van but this is great,
Great man..I appreciate your courage and patience..
...my country has no good smooth roads like your country has
Thanks Josh. I’m amazed at how professional your videos are with such a small and simple setup.
This is the same way I record my Cycling films too- thanks for the motivation 😊🙏🏽
I've always used the drone remote without the joysticks, which seems to give me a better control for slow movements. Also it is one less step to get the drone ready during a ride.
Ken oath, f those joysticks.
You can use the drone instead of iphone in your static shot on the ground.. so you don't have to climb again to the phone .. just RTH it will came to you 😊
battery bro, battery
Thank you. Not only have I been trying to work out how to do this, but I am also so Impressed with your stamina !❤
Again, absolutely brilliant mate. Just shows you how good you are if people think you have a film crew 👍
U r one of the very few biggest inspirations for anyone trying to push himself to the limits the way u did
Nice video showing all that doubling back on yourself to get those shots!

Thanks Josh....and the crew of Josh and DJI drone ..I greatly appreciate you sharing your adventures and experiences !
Nice me too - been filming my journey riding northeastern Thailand for the last 5 years
Astonished that you do all the editing on your phone - that’s shows such skill on your part. Kudos!

Wicked video! That tripod looks the business and the gopro mouth attachment... why haven't I seen that before! Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on your hard work, the spectator can truly witness how difficult yet satisfying it is to create videos! I'm a content creator as well and I'm fascinated that you can edit everything just with your phone!
Inspiring stuff, amazing footage and done with dignity and unquestionable integrity. Well done!!
Great insight on how you do your videos Josh, must do plenty extra miles with going back to retrieve photo or putting phone out and riding into the shot.
Thanks for sharing all the details. 👍
Fantastic insight into what you do to produce your videos 👍
Lot of hard work and initiative, I know... thanks for this video!

Good Luck, man! You are Welcome in Bulgaria again next year!
You are incredible ❤️ doing this puts a lot of effort and creativity 👏
Wow!
Hard work. Wonderful result!
Thanks.
because of this filming tricks your trip multiply x2 distance 😁
BTW great shots and angles - wish you good luck, man!🤩

Look up the Insta360 camera. Amazing.
That’s amazing. The Insta360 x3 can help with a lot of your shots

Hi Josh, thank you for the nice video full of profitable informations. And it´s great fun to watch you.
Thanks a lot for sharing all this tricks! Very inspiring
Thanks so much, it would be great if you could explain the edit process and which software you use.
So insightful and inspiring! Amazing to see the effort and passion behind your work 👊
Bravo! Nicely done. With your talent, you are going places...no pun intended.
Good video, thanks I was looking for ideas for mine, amazing videos!
Instamic is the best solution for your audio and you can get also the audio when you film with the drone

Love the idea, been using the same method for recording, yours are inspiring . Have a safe ride 😀
absolute legend
For audio you can use airpod as a microphone. I think the audio quality is decent.
awesome vid. Its work man!! I highly suggest checking out the new Insta360 X3 cam. I ditched my GoPros after years for this camera.
Very interesting and informative, thanks. I am intending to up my video skills for my motorcycle rides. U r such an amazing guy Josh keep the good stuff going
Very helpful video! Not a criticism but would be good if you listed the equipment you use as I had to backtrack a few times to catch what you were saying 😃
nice and easy set, i overcomplicate my life always
What a ball ache it all is. Kudos to you for taking the time and trouble. I wonder how many extra kms you notch up with your back and forth for the camera. Thanks for the videos!
heyy... nice channel
you're gonna be big
i love your music choice, what is it named?
ambiance?
Good work, well done.
Thank you for your sharing, it is nice video and the best vlogs
Your work is excellent and amazing!
Great Video, keep it up!! Love from India
Ur putting great efforts into filming rides. Keep it up.
Cool. Thanks. You may have mentioned this but what app / program do you use for editing on your iphone? I just found on another comment that you use iMovie to edit on your iphone. Cool.
Thanks for sharing. Amazing effort!!! I totally understand you :P Keep up with the good work!!!
Very impressive! I bet that is very time comsuming but I would have never have guess all editing is done on an Iphone.
Great video ...Thanks. As you have pointed out, or "we" have learned.....making great video requires a lot of work; especially doubling back to pick up the camera! Keep riding! DD

Nice video!! I am using the same cameras and drone in my videos!! Best regards my friend.
Bit of cool behind the scenes action! BTW, what gloves have you found work well for riding? I'm especially curious given how much flming you do.
I tend not to use gloves a huge amount but was using rapha brevet gloves whilst on the tcr
Great video, dude. If you are so inclined, I’d really be interested in how you actually utilize your drone. What I mean is: from taking it out to getting it in flight, taking shots and landing it. I can certainly do a video on this at some point
@@Josh-Reid thanks, Josh. It’s so easy to ask…but I appreciate your time. 😉
Life goals❤
Thank you so much for sharing this ❤
Not familiar with the Rode, but the DJI mic allows you to record internally. You wouldn't need to attach the reveiver, but you do lose the ability to record the audio directly to the video though. Respect! Grandiose Aufnahmen🤗
Awesome video. Love it!
When people think you have a crew, you’re doing it right!
