I used to live in a college town (Berkeley, California). University towns are always lively and have good, cheap restaurants for the students that the rest of us can enjoy. When I was a college professor, we had colleagues from Santo Tomas visit for a sabbatical year. My colleagues and I enjoyed showing them around the San Francisco Bay area.

Wow! Thank you for the brief tour of UST. I enjoy watching your travel blogs. I'm sorry you weren't allowed to take more photos there. Have a safe flight to Davao. Those guys at the carinderia!
“No video, not allowed (?)” is a sentence Filipinos will regret. A few years ago, when Bohol had an earthquake, many of the 400-year-old Spanish Churches were destroyed. Before the quake, they had a sign “no video.” History is gone forever.
UST is my alma Mater, studied BFA...There are more greeneries today when I was there and the campus have more opened spaces, nonetheless, it is a beautiful University! I am sorry that you were not able to look and see more at the campus and maybe someday you can get in touch with a staff or a current student there, so they will guide you to the campus. THANK you, Marshall for doing a great job on your videos, we enjoyed watching you!
Watched Flying Kell do a campus tour of UST. I believed he got permission from the school to shoot videos. You may want to contact the school Marshall.
Nice to see UST again. I kind of miss manila now. I remember some friends who graduated there too. They have this distinct character embedded to them by the faculty and the school itself. Good pride. I think you're lucky because you got some footage because I think it really isn't allowed. Thank you marshall once again. These things just gives nostalgia.
Thank you for taking me back to my school. Graduated 1995 and been there once or twice since then. A lot has changed but the main landmarks still remain the same. That parking lot in front of the Botanical Garden is where I used to park my dad's old Mitsubishi Lancer back in the day. We dissected cats at the botanical garden and studied the plants there. I still know a lot of their scientific names. Sorry you were not allowed to film. Maybe it's for the security of the students there. Studied Biology and Medicine there but now I'm so far I can only get home to the Philippines every few years. Take care Marshall.
It was Covid madness at the time. No video anywhere; like it was going to spread the virus. Things are so much more relaxed now. Thank you for you reminiscence and your comment.
I don't know how that carinderia is surviving with minimal profit. P78 for the rice, 2 longganizas, egg and tortang talong. Just to give you a breakdown of the costing : Rice P8 + Longganizas P20 + Egg P6 + Tortang Talong P13 + Gas P10 = P57 cost while settling for P28 profit (¢0.54 USD) before taxes. They'd really appreciate the tip you gave 'em.
tweet 🐦 Not sure how long ago you took the short clip, but from the video, the University could use some exterior improvements, or structural refurbishing. She is due for that now. But then some, would prefer to see UST as is -- looking ancient as she is. I understand she needs to be preserved and all the more the need for immediate repairs. Thanks for the UST walking tour, Marshall. be blessed. apr2022.

When you do get a chance to reshoot (I hope you do) you may want to visit the UST museum-the oldest on campus museum in the country. And maybe even the UST Library and archives- the biggest one in the country in terms of books. It contains a copy of the first book ever published in the Philippines, Jose Rizal's grades (he graduated from UST med school) and even a book by Galileo.

Meals at a family-run Filipino carinderia are scenes that win the hearts of Filipinos, domestic or abroad. I am certain that Marshall has given his ability to earn subscribers a big boost. The cost of living in Manila has been found to be among the highest or the highest in Asia. If you've been to Hongkong then you'd get an idea how tough life in Manila or the Philippines is. The street food culture has been gentrified or hipified especially in Cebu and Manila, so much of what vloggers feature does not reflect the reality that many Filipinos live with. This foray that Marshall attempts to show here will earn points from those who appreciate the truth. It also wins many hearts amongst Filipinos. The course-correction is very much noted and appreciated, Marshall. Afterall, most Filipinos live abroad because of how tough life had been for us/them the past few decades.
Ive noticed if I mention to a Filipino about wanting to visit there, they haven't been back there or seem to want to. But I'm in las Vegas and the jobs here are paying good now so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.
I am not sure why we have inane rules here of video footages not being allowed to be taken of publicly visible buildings. I've not seen such rule anywhere else in the world. Am so sorry for your experience. UST could have used some exposure from vloggers like you. You started out giving very interesting information about UST that many people are not aware of. It's so unfortunate we have been deprived of a deeper understanding of UST's history.
Totally agree with you. Same thing happened to Marshall when he went to Quezon Memorial. Leaves one scratching one’s head and ask what the sane rationale is.
Also experienced that in egypt. I was taking a picture of the pyramid and suddenly, the police said that i can't take videos or photos. They even deleted alot of the videos and photos that i took.
U made it sir marshall-u had videoed the main bldg(oldest bldg),the church(Santisimo Rosario),the driveway leading to the botanical garden, lover's lane-but the security guard was a certified KJ..before the pandemic, joggers around from the vicinity have to register at the guardhaus& pay 150php for an id pass... well money talks.. probably u should have paid them...Have a safe trip sir marshall...
Marshall, my wife graduated from the university in 1990 with a degree in mathematics. I am sure you also know that the university was a POW camp where the Japanese Imperial Army imprisoned so man Americans and others. The death and suffering there was horrible. It should also be noted that the Angels of Bataan/Corregidor were imprisoned there and served their entire captivity in the hospital set up on campus.
Good video. Did you watch your video after filming. no one in Or around the restaurant where you were eating had any masks on. We stopped wearing them about 6 to 10 months ago in the US. You had the shot and were the only one masked up. Does it make sense to you. Take care safe travels
Brilliant Mate I really like the way you narrate the history of UST. You seem to be expert in doing so. BTW, it is the oldest “catholic” university in Asia. Keep it up. Next one should be other schools near like Adamson, Ateneo, University of the Philippines amongst others. Stay safe and enjoy 😁
Hi, next time visit UP - University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. It's about 493 hectares. #1 university in the Philippines (like Harvard of US). Too big, suggest have map.
I would say not allowing video-taking of university buildings is a stupid policy. The school is even promoting itself especially during enrollment season. It's free advertisement to the whole world!
Crazy why we don't let outsiders get in these University to roam around even with passes for the day! Anyways, my young daughter was thinking of going there this year but opted to go to University of Lasalle instead. This campus has so much history.
It's disappointing that they don't allow you to film even if it was holiday/no classes, or summer vacation. I finished college in this school, BFA in Advertising Arts, and some security guards cannot allow you to take a video/photo of the campus as long as you are a student or a faculty member. But you as a tourist, I'm glad that you visited my alma matter. The next time you visit I suggest you to go inside the main building, they are really known for historical artifacts.
Mate, I'm quite sure if you requested a visit from the staff there, they would have entertained you and let you film the entire campus. Excited about your Davao trip! Collab with Kyle Jennerman (Becoming Filipino) Canadian vlogger who lives in Davao Oriental. Love watching the Aussie Bourdain in action!
The school should have a policy as to who, when, and what can or can’t be filmed or that a prior request is required for campus filming and advise their security accordingly. Without that, the guards are left on their own to just say filming is prohibited which make them sound rude and bad optics for the school.
@@marshallbuttersvlogs6880 in davao fruits is a must especially durian and see a Philippine Eagle. Crocodile egg ice cream also a must try. Mindanao cuisine also.
For me it's good enough that you enjoyed the oldest University in Asia, even off cam (hopefully). A lot of academic events and students have videos of the place, so I can't understand the rule. Security may be concerned of giving outsiders clues of any possible vulnerabilities (they may have reduced security due to the pandemic).
It was really unfortunate that you weren't able to video much of the campus. I just came for a visit August 2022 and almost everything was back to normal, students and all. I took videos and photographs to my heart's content. The guards were more concerned about face masks than anything else at this point. I'm a 1994 alumni.
I took a small break over Easter after the fire at Emma's and my cancer scare and colonoscopy ( All's good now on that front ). So, I'm flying to Davao City tomorrow and the vlogs will start flowing again very soon my friend. Thanks for the query.
They are very strict,They should be thankful so that other country can watch the oldest U.S.T,Only rich filipino can study in that umiversity.😊Thank you SirMarchall for short video.its beautiful,u desreve more subscribers,ICoz you are promoting the food en culture as well thebeautiful places in my country.Stay safe Sir,😍0.f.w.Hongkong
Go and call rhe favulrt staff ans rhey will let you film and guide you. Lpts pf vloggers got detailed full access to the campus and the renownes muaeum inside. You have to come back.
It's quite surprising that the security guard didn't let you video. Because this vlogger did the same thing and ironic that he even had a chat with the security guard then .th-cam.com/video/P9Gox0bnrR4/w-d-xo.html , I do realize that this video is 3 years old but the thing is they were very accommodating then. I hope you can revisit the campus, i think face to face classes will be starting this June to August. Also it would be better that you revisit when there's classes as the Main Building has a little museum and has a few interesting artifacts in there. The Main Building is the last building you shot before you got cut off.
You should check mang tootz carinderia beside UST.

Oh, gladly.
That's interesting Wes. I have done quite a bit of research but the security guard cut my visit very short!
Yes, including the British, Australian, Dutch, Polish and more others and was made into internment camp by the Japanese during WW2.
Good video. Did you watch your video after filming. no one in Or around the restaurant where you were eating had any masks on. We stopped wearing them about 6 to 10 months ago in the US. You had the shot and were the only one masked up. Does it make sense to you. Take care safe travels
Not really. But, in a crowded space I will continue to wear a mask. But, I get your point Ja Ja.
This is my Alma mater University of sto. Tomas 👍👍
Hi, next time visit UP - University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. It's about 493 hectares. #1 university in the Philippines (like Harvard of US). Too big, suggest have map.
Good idea. Thanks.
and no rules against filming or photographing
Thanks Jcrew 😂
The school should have a policy as to who, when, and what can or can’t be filmed or that a prior request is required for campus filming and advise their security accordingly. Without that, the guards are left on their own to just say filming is prohibited which make them sound rude and bad optics for the school.
@@marshallbuttersvlogs6880 please go to up diliman and up Los banos next.
Tour of manila zoo or Arroceros park would be great
Both good ideas Lau, thanks.
Can you just walk in without an appointment?
Having a GoPro mounted on the strap of your backpack in front might be good idea when filming a walk tour. Stealthy.
Yes, haha, stealth is the GoPros strength.
2:46, that's because of the Data Privacy Act. Filming around schools and universites is a bit iffy with the law
MARSHALL CALL THE UST CUSTOMER SERVICE FACULTY AND GET PERMIT TO HAVE FULL ACCESS VIDEO TO TJE CAMPUS LIKE OTHER VLOGGERS DID.
It was really unfortunate that you weren't able to video much of the campus. I just came for a visit August 2022 and almost everything was back to normal, students and all. I took videos and photographs to my heart's content. The guards were more concerned about face masks than anything else at this point. I'm a 1994 alumni.
The campus will be open on September.
Why is ther no new video?
I took a small break over Easter after the fire at Emma's and my cancer scare and colonoscopy ( All's good now on that front ). So, I'm flying to Davao City tomorrow and the vlogs will start flowing again very soon my friend. Thanks for the query.
@@marshallbuttersvlogs6880 miss watching your videos! Hope you’re fine Marshall 🙏
wait I dont get it, the guard asked you to stop recording a video, while people with cellphone cameras do that inside UST all the time? i mean wtf
Why not email the school to ask permission to vlog. They may also assist you in some lecture s
Australyano ako rin Marshall!
Thanks Florida, I hope you are well and safe.
Go and call rhe favulrt staff ans rhey will let you film and guide you. Lpts pf vloggers got detailed full access to the campus and the renownes muaeum inside. You have to come back.
you may need to coordinate with university admin for permission to film.
Marshall 🇵🇭💪🏻❤️
Keep safe
The security should have been more polite.
