  • The University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest existing university in Asia. It also has one of the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen. I also check out some cheap local student eats.

“No video, not allowed (?)” is a sentence Filipinos will regret. A few years ago, when Bohol had an earthquake, many of the 400-year-old Spanish Churches were destroyed. Before the quake, they had a sign “no video.” History is gone forever.

I used to live in a college town (Berkeley, California). University towns are always lively and have good, cheap restaurants for the students that the rest of us can enjoy.
When I was a college professor, we had colleagues from Santo Tomas visit for a sabbatical year. My colleagues and I enjoyed showing them around the San Francisco Bay area.

Thank you for taking me back to my school. Graduated 1995 and been there once or twice since then. A lot has changed but the main landmarks still remain the same. That parking lot in front of the Botanical Garden is where I used to park my dad's old Mitsubishi Lancer back in the day. We dissected cats at the botanical garden and studied the plants there. I still know a lot of their scientific names. Sorry you were not allowed to film. Maybe it's for the security of the students there. Studied Biology and Medicine there but now I'm so far I can only get home to the Philippines every few years. Take care Marshall.

Wow...i grew up in that area...my High School Alma Mater is just beside it ...the Ramon Magsaysay HS. We used to enter the campus freely last time...and we could play in their big grassy area just across the swimming pool. During Xmas...I normally attend the "Simbang Gabi" there, and after the Holy Mass, the fire crackers start to pop whenever the priest says " Humayo kayo ng Mapayapa"...( Go in Peace...). Very nostalgic for me.

I’m usually late going to school. Right by España, there’s an old saserdote who walks rain or shine. We run into each other most of the time. No one would confirm this, but in 1979, they allowed students to visit the basement where Jose Rizal was jailed. There were old memorabilias from his days on display. I was lucky enough to go there as a freshman. I returned in 1994, and the University staff denied knowing there was such a room. If you go to the Dapitan side, there’s an area that pays homage to a Filipino soldier, who single handedly downed so many Japanese combatants. When he was finally subdued and killed, the highest ranking Japanese commandant saluted his lifeless body. A honorary gesture from one soldier to the other, for unprecedented display of valor and bravery. There was a time when a med student was assaulted by another med student ( allegedly), in the wee hours of the morning. It was so shocking that I thought classes would be suspended. The whole place was so morose after. A heavy gloomy atmosphere hung in the whole med school. One pre-med doc tried to lighten the mood with humor. He said that the old spinster of a professor was asking for a very detailed information of where and what time it happened, in the hopes of getting …
I remember the worse flooding happened in 1982 I guess. I was standing in waist deep water along España (again) when a dump track drove by creating ripples of water. I was tossing and almost was submerged had the staff from the registrars’ office not grabbed me. I had since hidden my face when ever I payed my tuition. I remember doctors eating in the cafeteria, with the water up to almost their knees. This one famous consultant, ate so heartily despite the River of water surrounding him. I am so glad I went to UST. I could almost imagine that Praile looking at me to say “your late”. Also thanks Fr. Cabezon for calling me a charlatana. 😅 It took years for me to find out what it meant but I thought then it was a good praise word because it was foreign sounding, European to be exact. 😅

I don't know how that carinderia is surviving with minimal profit. P78 for the rice, 2 longganizas, egg and tortang talong. Just to give you a breakdown of the costing : Rice P8 + Longganizas P20 + Egg P6 + Tortang Talong P13 + Gas P10 = P57 cost while settling for P28 profit (¢0.54 USD) before taxes.

Meals at a family-run Filipino carinderia are scenes that win the hearts of Filipinos, domestic or abroad. I am certain that Marshall has given his ability to earn subscribers a big boost. The cost of living in Manila has been found to be among the highest or the highest in Asia. If you've been to Hongkong then you'd get an idea how tough life in Manila or the Philippines is. The street food culture has been gentrified or hipified especially in Cebu and Manila, so much of what vloggers feature does not reflect the reality that many Filipinos live with. This foray that Marshall attempts to show here will earn points from those who appreciate the truth. It also wins many hearts amongst Filipinos. The course-correction is very much noted and appreciated, Marshall. Afterall, most Filipinos live abroad because of how tough life had been for us/them the past few decades.

UST has produced not 2 but 3 cardinals: Cardinal Ceferino Gonzalez (late 19th century cardinal-archbishop of Sevilla then Toledo); Cardinal Jose Sanchez, who became member of Pope John Paul II’s cabinet and head of his Congregation of theClergy; and the incumbent archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Jose Advincula.

I'm sure that there is a high-level administrator of the University who will watch this video and see how badly their security guard treated somebody who could have promoted their campus so nicely. Instead the blocking of the video gives their school a bad vibe that was so unnecessary after other vloggers like Flying Kell and even their own students have already posted several publicized videos of the same buildings. The school administration could have used this video to their advantage but now they look bad.

I am sure you also know that the university was a POW camp where the Japanese Imperial Army imprisoned so man Americans and others. The death and suffering there was horrible. Mate, I'm quite sure if you requested a visit from the staff there, they would have entertained you and let you film the entire campus. Excited about your Davao trip! Collab with Kyle Jennerman (Becoming Filipino) Canadian vlogger who lives in Davao Oriental. Love watching the Aussie Bourdain in action!

The school should have a policy as to who, when, and what can or can’t be filmed or that a prior request is required for campus filming and advise their security accordingly. Without that, the guards are left on their own to just say filming is prohibited which make them sound rude and bad optics for the school.

It was really unfortunate that you weren't able to video much of the campus. I just came for a visit August 2022 and almost everything was back to normal, students and all. I took videos and photographs to my heart's content. The guards were more concerned about face masks than anything else at this point. I'm a 1994 alumni.

I suppose the vlogger was referring to the archi design of the building because it is an art deco and there are only few art deco buildings left in PH.

Good video. Did you watch your video after filming. no one in Or around the restaurant where you were eating had any masks on. We stopped wearing them about 6 to 10 months ago in the US. You had the shot and were the only one masked up. Does it make sense to you. Take care safe travels

Having a GoPro mounted on the strap of your backpack in front might be good idea when filming a walk tour. Stealthy.
