- After dreaming of the perfect places for my herbs, I finally have a permanent place for them. Today I dig them out of the buckets they've been living in all this time and pant them in our new raised beds.

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Parsley...... my favourite herb! ❤
One of our favorites - essential for making chimichurri to go with beef!
One of my must haves too! I like to use it in my herb dried blend. I dry oregano, lemon thyme, German thyme, parsley, mix together and densely grate together. Makes a very appreciated gift.
Flat French parsley! The chickens will like it too.
Fennel
Fennel! Especially bronze…OMG, so beautiful!
❤ the scent of LEMON BALM.
Add Mullein! They grow super tall and the bees love it. Nasturtiums, they need lots of space and they are beautiful throughout the fall.
You’d probably have to put mullien someplace where there’s more space and the roots get much to deep for the raised beds.
Yeah.... Mullein is an excellent suggestion..... but Sharon is def. right..... like Comfrey, it's gonna need it's own dedicated space, that those raised beds just don't/won't accommodate.
If anyone needs comfortery I have plenty of
Majorum. Garlic chives. Plant ginger in pots to prevent spread also pepper mint and lemon balm also in pots. I love herbs also. There's great healing in flowers also e.g violets.
I have been wanting to grow marjoram for a while but have not had success. I started seeds indoors and some came up but they were so delicate and fragile. I only got a few very small ones. Do you have any suggestions that works for you?
Cilantro/Corriander
GARLIC
Remember that the raised beds get colder during cold snaps than in-ground plants.
Rosemary is one of my favorites
Chamomile would be nice in a container. It can be a little invasive in the ground with Seed, but the container would work out nicely as a bonus pollinators love it.
Thanks for the tip, I just planted some in a pot. Not the garden!
Same as oregano-bees go crazy for it, rosemary-pretty flowers
Scarborough fair keeps running through my mind...lol. I make a chicken I call Scarborough fair chicken...lol, yup, features parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
It’s called Simon and Garfunkel style chicken!
@@johnr3603 LOL
Years ago when my grandson was about 4 or 5, I made pasta tossed with olive oil and parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme from my garden. I told him it was from a song and sang it for him. He insisted I just made that up. When his dad came to pick him up, I said we made pasta and told him the ingredients and he immediately started singing, "Are you going, to Scarborough Fair?..." My grandson was stunned that his dad knew about that thing that the 5-year-old had never heard of. Now he occasionally asks if I can make Scarborough Fair Pasta when he visits and it's fun to see his high-school friends seeking out Simon and Garfunkle to hear that song and make their own dishes.
@@xpurg8d mmm gonna try that!
@@marthasundquist5761 Sauté a little garlic in the oil before combining everything. I didn't mention that earlier because Paul Simon didn't include it in his song, but it enhances the dish immeasurably.😏
I look forward to watching everything's grow 😁 I know you aren't an herbalist but when you DO harvest anything that you use the roots on, can you bring us along to see how it's done?
Thanks for the great video ❤️
God bless
Kevin's shirts are LOL funny! Every week I look forward to seeing what he's wearing. Great tutorial on herbs, Sarah. Thank you.
Cilantro and parsley
I so enjoy watching how well God has blessed your greenhouse and garden. God did not bless me with a green thumb but I still love plants. Medicinal plants that I like to use are turmeric, ginger, elderberry, rose hips, hibiscus, lemon balm and chamomile ( I have all of these dried in my pantry). During the cold and flu season I make an elderberry syrup that has elderberries (of course), hibiscus, rose hips, ginger and raw honey.
Sarah, you can overwinter your lemongrass in your high tunnel so you do not have to buy it every year.
Lemon Balm, would over winter in the bed. Ours does and we are zone 6a
How about hibiscus?
I am in growing zone 5b and my lemon balm is a perennial as well.
I know you planted raspberries and blackberries but don’t forget about elderberries! Cilantro if you like the taste, it’s a favorite of ours. Also bergamot, sweet William, chamomile.... Can’t wait to see the beds fill out! So exciting! ❤
I would love to see them plant blueberries as well!!
Have you ever grown Lemon Verbena. It smells fantastic just like sherbet lemons. I use it to make tea. Also it's great if you cover the bottom of a sponge tin with the leaves, place a plain sponge mix on top & bake. The sponge is infused and the leaves easily peel off before eating.
I also make a lemon syrup to drizzle over the top.
Lemon Balm is used in the same way, but the Verbena is so much better.
I over winter mine in a greenhouse as in in the UK 🇬🇧 & it is semi tender here.
“I just wet my plants” Love the shirt❤
Someone mentioned nasturtiums above. I second that one. They repel squash beetles! Plus they're beautiful and tasty in salads. The green fresh seeds can be harvested and brined or pickled for a wonderful caper substitute. Yummy!
Parsley and coriander. I find these herbs essential in any cooking. Good luck and God bless
Coriander leaves….use in cooking for salsas, etc. = cilantro
Love ground coriander seeds in the Indonesian chicken dish I make. I share recipes if you want it.
Your herb garden is as pretty as the rest of the garden. You two are awesome. Have a great evening. Lisa
I live in central texas. I found the lavender likes very little water. I could not keep mine alive, so i planted more and just ignore them, getting blooms now. I blended with sugar (1 TBSP to 1/4 cup of sugar) sprinkled in Bundt cake and on cream cheese icing. Fam loved it. I got purple turmeric from baker creek and ave grown Ginger from the groceries store.
I know the feeling of having to wait for something. But just look at how perfect it is turning out. You had lots of time to decide what you needed to do.
I think there is something special about planting herbs. It feels different than planting ,let's say a tomato plant. I plant tomatoes lots of them, but planting herbs, just feels different. I think it's because our bodies know how beneficial they are. And also just our medicinal plants that are growing naturally around us that we have ignored or called weeds for so long. We need to go back and learn the old ways of using herbal medicine. You look so happy.
I'm so happy for you! 😀
I've planted a long row of chives. In my part of Sweden chives are among the first plant in the garden that I can get a harvest from and harvest I do. I cut them up an put them in the freezer.
And I use them instead of onions in fried rice, omelettes, soups...
It's kind of a 'plant once and harvest many years' kind of plant. And that's perfect for me. 😊
That is awesome!
Wonderful! So glad your herbs have a more permanent home. I've been watching for a LONG time and know you were always looking for some place to have a specific space. ♥
Thank you so much!
@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I wanted to share some observations and suggestions on your medicinal herb gardens.
I also have mine in raised metal modular beds (mine are Birdies beds)
Firstly, I noticed that the chives you planted are fully mature, with blossoms atop.
My recommendation would be to trim them down to about an inch from the ground. This will help the plants recover from transplant shock. If you don't trim them, the roots will struggle to support all the top growth and seed development.
It's always best to fully trim perennial herbs before transplanting .
Secondly, I urge you to remove the yarrow and catnip (catmint) from your beds immediately.
Yarrow is known for its prolific spreading through underground runners and self-seeding.
I made the mistake of planting a small area of yarrow - a 3 inch square, in my bed and within a couple of seasons, it had taken over the ENTIRE bed and started spreading to other areas of my yard. Even with constant vigilance to contain it, you cant prevent it from taking over.
The same is true with the catnip you planted in the last bed. The correct name is catMINT and as a true mint, it spreads prolifically. I removed all my catmint over a decade ago and I continue to find patches throughout my property to this day. As a true mint, it spreads aggressively.
Lastly, you mentioned planting holy basil, also known as Tulsi.
It's important to note that there are four different varieties of Tulsi, each with its own unique medicinal properties.
It would be helpful if you could specify which variant you planted, whether it's:
Tulsi - Vana
Tulsi - Rama
Tulsi - Temperate, or ;
Tulsi - Krishna?
All 4 cultivars get quite large. You may find that the quickly overtake the space.
I hope these suggestions are helpful to you in maintaining your medicinal herb gardens. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

So glad your dream is finally coming true. Beautiful ❤
One of my favorite perennial herbs is Lovage. Very much like celery but somewhat stronger... very useful for cooking... great dried and used as a seasoning! Blessings on your family and your new herb garden!!! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
I tried lovage for that reason (several times) and it has never grown! Does it not like zone 3b weather?
So happy you finally have your herb garden! I'll give grace on not being a cat person since I have 3 and they all love catnip! I also love oregano. It is my favorite herb!
Thanks for another lovely Saturday visit with y’all at your homestead!
Your project looks great! Chamomile would be a great addition. I didn't realize how easily it reseeds and mine popped up some volunteers in the pot where I have dill. I had to play a game of "Now, which one of these is dill and which one is chamomile?" I won. My granddaughters love keeping it harvested so we can dry it for tea.
All your garden beds are looking amazing! ❤
Good Morning All ! Glad the herbs have a permanent home now. Hope you have a nice day. Gona be a hot one hear. Lv and Prayers to all.
It's so great when a plan comes together. Its fun watching your plants grow. Can't wait to harvest. Take us along.
I always put a frost bag over my lavender and since doing that they have always survived the winter. God bless and take care❤,,💙🧡🧡🩵
I know you have gotten this said a thousand times but boy do you guys do an awesome job at your projects. The beds look amazing. It's always such a joy to see what you two have accomplished now. Can't wait till the next video.
Lemongrass is considered a TENDER perennial, in zones 8-9 it can live outside, but where temps get below 20 degrees it needs to be overwintered in a garage or greenhouse.
So happy for you Sarah! You have your herb garden :) You are such a joy! I know your family and friends appreciate your sharing! I planted all my mints in big pots. I have basil and Cilantro all over in my garden and green stock planted, I love both :)
Good morning. LTH community! Always excited to see a new video pop up. 💗🌿 God bless you all.
Lovely herb garden!!! So happy for you. Your lemon grass is going to spread & get quite large. : )
❤ Happy Saturday everyone! ❤
I am interested in the fence behind y'all, it looks to be 48" what is it called. It appears to be stronger than welded wire? Thanks
Self Heal is something I want to grow.
It's wonderful to see you so excited about your herb gardens
Good morning Sarah and Kevin. What a wonderful Herb Garden you two have planted all around your garden and greenhouse. Thanks for sharing with us, keep up the great videos and the fun you have with your gardening. Fred.
Congrats on the new herb beds. Love seeing how happy this makes you.
I love tarragon and plant it every year, although it did come back this spring. . It has a mild licorice flavor and love it on fish. Lemon verbena is a great one too, it's an annual here. I add it to tea for flavor and love the smell.
Your garden has turned out so beautiful!😍
Hey guys! So happy you are finally getting your herb garden! Looking forward to seeing everything you harvest!
My favorite herb is Silver Lemon Thyme! Look for it! A very lemony, floral scent and taste. I use it on a lot of things, but especially on eggs and in marinara sauce. I had one survive the winter in a pot, but usually buy it as an annual every year.
I’ve grown marshmallow from seeds from Baker Creek for three years, but only from seeds three years ago. Reseeds itself and I’ve had marshmallow even grow in my wood mulch on top of landscaping fabric!
Those gardens are going to be beautiful❤️
Lovage! I love having lovage that I can use in my cooking. 😊
Thank you for sharing your dream with us Sarah. 💗
Hello Kevin & Sarah 😊 I would highly recommend Paracress or also called toothache plant. The flowers are uniquely beautiful and I made a tincture last year from the flowers. My children came to live with us last fall along with their toothaches and the plant has been a life saver for them. It will take away pain and get you through until you get to a dentist. Have also used it this year still. Almost gone and I wish I had planted more this year. Love your videos!
Good morning. Glad you got your space for the herbs, have a blessed day.
Bay laurel, chamomile, cilantro, dill,, lemon balm, marjoram, parsley, , rosemary, tarragon and thyme are all good additions in an herb garden.
Bay laurel is a great one. I can see you planting that in one of those buckets and having more than enough for life.
When I plant mint I take a big pot cut the bottom off and plant it in the ground so it doesn't spread, you forgot bee balm. 😊happy herb gardening ❤God bless you 🙏
Happy Day! I use herbs as they are a gift from God.
If it were my herb garden, I would have to have cilantro and parsley. Thanks for the video.
So happy for you. You will have such a sense of pride and comfort each time you go to the garden!
Really enjoy watching you two work together!!! ❤
I’m so excited for your herb garden! Herbs have been a part of my focus this year but my ideas have far outreaches my time and abilities this year. I’m being patient though and trusting the process. I look forward to seeing your herb garden grow. Thanks for sharing the garden with us!
PS my husband keeps asking if the cow had her baby 😊
I know what it feels like to wait for a long time for your dreams to come to fruition. I’m very happy for you! Grow what you love and use. Space is too precious to grow things you don’t love using. For me, lemon balm - I drink it almost daily, but it too can spread. Personally, I can’t have too much and when mine spreads too far I just dig some up and give it to friends.
I love watching your farm grow and become everything you dreamed of. GOD bless
I am so glad for you. I am enjoying every moment getting vicarious pleasure. Thank you for being such an excellent teacher as you do all these things. God bless you both as you homestead.❤
Chamomile!😁Love your new herb gardens❤️
Kevin, if you don't stop loosin weight you're gonna blow away in that Missouri wind 😂
I love herbs. I would say get some Mullen and wild bergamot.
"I JUST WET MY PLANTS", Oh how I wish I'd thought of that way back in the day. It would have saved me a ton of embarrassment.
Great herb garden start! Thanks for sharing! It will be fun to see how they grow in there! Blessings to everyone 🤗🇨🇦
God bless you Kevin and Sarah, and so happy for your dream herb garden. Also, some herbs to consider growing, are Pau d'arco which are good for a wide range of conditions, including pain, arthritis, inflammation of the prostate gland, fever, dysentery, boils, ulcers, free radicals and most important (various cancers, it's a potent cancer killer.) Tea tree leaves which are good for preventing tooth decay or cavities. 😃👍
Herbs are an essential part of the garden.❤❤
How exciting!!! Herbs are one of my most favorite things to grow, so I know how excited you must be. A few herbs to think about chamomile, lemon balm, and bee balm. All three are culinary and medicinal. Thanks for sharing your love of growing herbs! Take care & God Bless ❤️
If you plant bee balm or lemon balm, keep in mind they are in the mint family so they will take over anywhere you put them (and anywhere close they can reach).
Sometimes it takes a long Time before something will be getting to come true.i wish you well well congratulations ❤
The whole farm looks beautiful.❤
So happy for you! Thanks for sharing. 💚🐸😎
Marjorum, parsley, thyme, ginger, if you have these and I forgot..... Oops 😉
I love planting herbs, I have them interspersed among my flowers and borders, and places in my yard where it's difficult to get other things to grow. I don't actually use all the herbs I plant but the pollinators love them. The beds in front of my house I planted herbs in there's a lot of Lavender, Thyme and Lemmon Balm. I love to sit their and watch the bees have fun. Although I really have to keep after the lemmon balm or it will overrun the bed. And it smells so nice. It's nice your herb garden dream came true. It will be so pretty. Plant Cilantro if you use it in salsa. 😊
Chamomile - freeze dries well! Great for tea.
I just love the way you set up your herb garden. Can't wait to see them take off.
The herb garden looks great! Don't forget the chamomile! It smells so good! God Bless!
Yay! A permanent home for your herbs! ❤
Love your new herb garden! Thanks for sharing!❤
Oh I am so happy for you that you are getting this set up
Great job know you have been waiting for this to happen. Excited for you and thank you for sharing.
Parsley, cilantro, rosemary, chamomile, garlic chives, tarragon, um...I can't think of anymore right now but congrats on your beautiful herb beds! They are going to be amazing for you!
So exciting Sarah! You have inspired me to get a little herb garden started! 🇨🇦
Rosemary!
So happy for you Sarah!
Have great weekend both of u😎👍
Borage is beautiful and has many uses
I'm so happy your herb garden is set to produce. Have you ever heard of wild lettuce for pain relief? A quick side note, I went to a "cervical chiropractor", and my migraines are almost non-existent. I normally get 5-6 migraines a week. I've now only had 1 since July 3rd. I'm almost 65 and have had them since my teens. I just wanted migraine sufferers to know. He doesn't crack your neck.
You will definitely LOVE the lemongrass!
Tarragon! It’s a lovely perennial, comes up very early in the spring, which makes my heart happy, and is great with eggs, poultry or fish.
So wonderful you have space to grow so many herbs. I love my herbs too. I Just made a jug of lemon balm iced tea. So refreshing.
I love this beautiful corner herb garden!! I would include chervil, watercress, and fennel!
Break the flowers up and use them in your salads or make a very pretty pink vinegar. Plant parsley, I dry in my microwave between paper towels on a paper plater for one minutes, check if needed to redry again
I take most of the stems off first. When dry I store in a jar and it taste so good. first
Valerian, nettle, parsley, marjoram, purple basil (YUM), lemon basil (amazing smell and taste)....oh my gosh, there are so many! You have a wonderful start right there and I know you have more in the lick tubs too. Our marshmallow plants are EIGHT feet tall right now! They tower over our 6 ft privacy fence. We can finally harvest root this year; we always harvest flowers. Shabbat Shalom and Blessings to you both!
I am so happy for you!
Always good to have Moringa,
😊
Good morning all. ❤❤❤
Love a good herb garden… I also enjoy growing and using savory, marjoram, parsley, tarragon and chamomile. Enjoy your new beds Sarah. God bless.
Looking forward to the marshmallow root harvest and processing, what helpful information.
