It wasn't just the animation, but Ray's ability to style his creatures and with the use of lighting and he understood the limits of film. He was a true pioneer. I admire his discipline, patience and determination to get his vision on film. What would my childhood have been without the nursery ryme stories, monster and fantasy movies?

I showed my 3 year old son Jason and the Argonaults, and from the moment Talos entered the scene, grand music and all, he was hooked.
I have to act it out, I am Talos and he is Heracules lol
Thank you Ray, for not only evoking the imagination and childhood to flourish for my son's, but of my own too when i was a boy. True master bar none

One can never get enough about the Great Ray Harryhausen: single-handedly did the fantastic and magnificently dramatic creations for decades of wondrous productions.
    Only him.
    One man!
One incredibly brilliant, charming, humble man.
If it was a Ray Harryhausen movie, you knew you were in for a magical experience like nothing you'd ever seen before!
Creatures the pathos of which could make an audience weep.

That's why I appreciate that filmmakers like Tim Burton are keeping stop motion alive. I also like that lately their has been a push for more practical effects in movies from audience rather than just CGI.

Has the pleasure of meeting harryhausen in Glasgow in the 90s. He was showing his creature creations at a convention and managed to get a pic with him. Moment I will always cherish. He was to become like his creations. Legendary !

Absolutely amazing. I grew up watching those Harryhausen films. Some were better than others, but the special effects always made me watch until the end, just in case something else happened. That kind of movie magic is timeless.

The children of the Hydra's teeth... the legend and the art of Ray Harryhausen will continue. I have devoted my life to this artform and have sworn a personal oath to it's continuation in addition to it's memory.

This needs to be on a t-shirt. "I destroyed New York, I destroyed San Francisco... it gets tiresome. - Ray Harryhausen".

I think I might find stop motion more interesting than cartoons and CGI animation, I can appreciate different forms of art but there's something about stop motion that is just so eye catching! And my mom showed me that Hansel and Gretel film by Harryhausen and I was really intrigued by it, Sinbad as well.

After applying a bump map to a 3D model you have to render it to check your lighting. Its not the same as sculpting and building your own model then lighting it and seeing it right in front of you where you can adjust everything by eye sight. That's where the artistry is. As an amateur 3D modeler and renderer I'm fascinated by the software but I'd much rather see stop motion and practical effects in film.

As someone who has worked with CGI professionally, in addition to compositing, I really think that stop motion, if used today, could be used to create a more realistic image and effect than CG.

I've had a great appreciation & vast respect for RH ever since I was little & had first seen the artistic beauty/grand efforts of his work. And admittedly it quite possibly ruined me on most nearly all CGI/non-animated style special effects...May you rest in peace Ray!

Both Willis Obrian and Ray Harryhausen's stop motion creatures seem to have one foot in reality and the other in fantasy on the screen. Both men's subjects appear very warm and alive, While displaying a great deal of peronality. Creatures made by Computer graphics lack the warmth & personality of Ray H. & Willis O. creatures. Todays subjects/creatures made by computer are not limited to the laws of gravity. So this will usually have a negative effect on the operators self discipline which will effect the outcome of the film.

Even to this day the stop motion carves a niche. Its equal to Jurassic Park range but I wish more work could have been done using the technique. Movies like Valley of Gwangi could use some more creatures and even King Kong has omitted parts. The best parts of stop motion is the beautiful color and landscapes. It gives life to the word prehistoric while current films set the animals too from our time and space. It lessens the mystique.

Most CGI I have watched is complete TOILET, the action is so fast and the screen so cluttered you can't even see what is going on. Ray Harryhausen was a genius.

The only depressing thing about Harryhausen's career is that he was pushed into B-movies out of necessity. So many great effects scenes were created for movies of such low quality in terms of dialogue, acting, etc. Shame things didn't work out differently.

Not all of Ray's films were B movies!! Ray hated it when people would say that. The black and white films were certainly B movies but most of his color films were tightly budgeted A films! And Clash of the TItans had a very large budget in 1981! The films that had composer Bernard Herrmann using the London Symphony Orchestra to record the score were definitely NOT B movies! And The 3 Worlds Of Gulliver had its premiere with the Royal Family in London as a Royal premiere event! B movies don't have that opportunity, believe me.
