I started driving in 1977, which means your odds were good of owning a car that still needed points plus dist cap and rotor, that needed frequent inspection and/or replacing. Carb cleaning every few oil change intervals plus spark plugs that needed changing every 10,000 miles too. If you didn't do these things you'd know about it because your car wouldn't start and/or it'd run like crap so you couldn't avoid maintenance for long. Meanwhile, the amount of maintenance required on modern cars is a thousand times less and basically consists of an oil change; yet so many people can't even be bothered to do even that!

  • @brandoncarver8882

I wanted to comment on this with my experience. I recently (against my better judgment) bought a 2018 rouge the dealership was floored when I drove one tire up on a curb and crawled under it with a flashlight and checked every nook and cranny. The wife absolutely loved the car and wanted all the fancy infotainment junk and hated my perfectly maintained Mazda because it was old and manual. So after demanding a replacement windshield (the previous one had been cracked in a recent hail storm) I hesitantly purchased the car. Fast forward several years and I have had multiple check engine and service engine lights for various bull crap sensors on a car with less than 60k miles meanwhile my 02 f150 with 80k miles hasn’t given me any issues at all. It’s sad how unreliable vehicles are nowadays. I was very excited to buy a vehicle that wasn’t a junkyard special and even still had some warranty on it and yet it’s given me the most problems I’ve had in recent years.

Currently driving 2006 VW Passat B6 Variant. 2.0 TDI 103KW. I bought it 5 years ago from a guy whom I knew and he was the only owner of it. He was always car guy and bought this Passat to travel Europe which he did. I bought it with 520k km. Currently creeping on 700k km (450k miles) and it still runs like a charm. My exhaust pipe is rusted at the end, not a single sign of sooth! MPG is still great. City around 7l/100km (33 MPG). Doing 95km (~60mph) is around 5.8l/100 (~40 MPG).
Recent problems: Radiator leak (prolly original radiator because it got corroded at the bottom). Last year had to change AC compressor as it died. And currently 2 midle ventilation vents aren't working because automatic valves are broken. Other than that, the only MAJOR problem I have with it is damn paint started bubbling all over the place and rusts are appearing. I really would like to keep it as it runs so nice, but whole body paint would be pretty expensive.

Nice to see a vehicle that is well taken care of for once. Makes this mechanical engineer proud. Take pride in what you own! My Lexus ES300 is 19 years old and has 170k on the odometer. I have taken care of it for the last 8 years and put 100,000 miles on it. I've taken it up to the Canadian border multiple times, trips to Milwaukee, and the longest trip to date was some 9 hours to Keystone SD from the Twin Cities to see Mt. Rushmore last year. No issues whatsoever. This summer, I am going to an amusement park in Ohio which is some 12 hours away which will be the longest road trip I've taken in this car. No hesitations whatsoever that it will run just fine.
Even with the brutal Minnesota winters this car has endured (frequent car washes are a must!), it has held up well and the overwhelming reason for that is because I have taken care of it. Even the most well designed, reliable vehicle will fall apart if you do not maintain it. I grumble sometimes when I need to put in thousands for shocks, timing belts etc but I have to remind myself that the price of maintaining an older car is still way way cheaper than the price of buying a new one. I would like to get a hybrid or plug in hybrid and something with AWD as I go hunting a lot now and getting stuck in the snow isn't something I want, but with the price insanity that is the COVID era car market, the old Lexus will run just fine for a few more years until I can get something more decently priced and I'm sure the new owner will get a lot of enjoyment out of it as long as they take care of it too. Frankly, the only real killer of this car other than an accident will be rust from all the salt the frame sees.

The new owner has to replace 4 tires (all 4 have at least 1 screw or nail in them dang food delivery to the construction area but only 1 tire has a slow leak), had 2 accidents, the window washer fluid reservoir wasn't replaced after the second accident that cracked it. I can say 80-90k miles was all food delivery. The air filter needs to be replaced but Idk if they left the clean replacement in the trunk under the floor. Also, the new owner doesn't have to worry about getting an oil change for another 19,000 miles. The cars I use have to work just as hard as I do, so I take care of them the best I can. It does cross all vehicle brands......if you take care of the vehicle, you will have a reliable car that sells for WAY MORE when it comes time to sell it.
I bought a 2010 Suburban 2500 4x4 with 119,000 miles for $20K. It looked (inside and out) and drove like a 50K mile vehicle. I put 60K miles on it over 7 years, sold it with 180K miles for $18K. The guy and his wife could not believe the condition of my Sub, compared to all the others they looked at. They didnt even haggle on price!

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE! Keeps your vehicle in A-1 condition. That’s what I try to tell friends and co-workers, but most don’t and in the end pay astronomical fees to repair and replace things that if maintained would have lasted the life of the vehicle. Roger in Pierre South Dakota

This is bizzare to me. Why would you make the kind of investment that buying a decent car costs, and not follow the manufacturer's service schedule? I don't mean take it to the main dealer, but once a year to the guy around the corner to do your oil, your filters, your spark plugs, etc. and then the big jobs at the major intervals.
In the UK, we have a thing called MOT test (really to assess roadworthyness). We just take it to the mechanic once a year for the annual service and have him take it for the MOT test. It tends to cost between £200 - £300 a year. I've never had anything major fail in 30 years. (Though I do drive Hondas, so there's always that.)

@@henrydillard6217 I know what you mean. My VW mechanic I had for 20+ years retired and now it’s hard to find anyone up here in South Dakota I would trust working on my 67. I do oil changes, because they don’t know how to clean the oil screen before refilling the oil. Or adjust the valves. I wouldn’t trust a VW dealership to touch it. My new mechanic doesn’t know a lot about vintage VWs, but I know he would do research before attempting any repair or adjustments. Haven’t taken it to him yet. It’s running quite well at the present moment. I don’t drive it when it rains or even when there is a chance of rain. Strictly a summer fun car these days.

A well-maintained used car is almost like the Holy Grail... I tend to drive mine until they're worth more as parts, so it's odd to have both my cars under 75,000 miles. Both are immaculate mechanically. The interior on the 2010 Beetle is a little screwy, but that's just age vs plastic in a black on black car and the fact that someone decided to destroy the hooks by which you remove VW radios thus necessitating the disassembly of the dash to free the unit for replacement without damaging the [completely working] head unit itself. I'll do it when I'm ready to punch the hole for my NMO 2 meter/70cm antenna mount and wire in my Yaesu in the console area which will involve going to the battery since it puts out 80 watts over the air [and draws about double that from inrush current] at 13.8v and while not a rocket surgeon, I know that's far too much to draw from an accessory socket.

This may not apply everywhere, or to everything, but hear me out,, water needs to drain, streets typically are taller in the center to facilitate such, so left 2 tires riding closer to the center could potentially be higher then the remaining two on the right, the result of which being a slight drifting off to the right. EZ way to tell is drive opposite direction but also in the same lane, if in fact caused by the street, car likely would pull left. It.will pull right again going back the direction you came if you are in the right hand lane , because the angle from center to curb is sloping the same way left to right. But if you were in the same lane you arrived by, but just heading the opposite direction, ie driving on left side of he street, the slope would then be from right to left.

Organic solvents (like brake cleaner fluid) dissolve plastics, so by washing covers and non-metals with it, you're actually aging it rapidly, not cleaning it. It's a quick fix but it'll cause longer term problems when the client is trying to sell it. May as well wipe it off with a cloth and burn it off. Used cars aren't brand new, and they shouldn't be expected to look as such. If you're that concerned about how it looks, wipe off the residual oil and wipe the cover down with high heat oil. What you're doing is making it pretty but you're actually depreciating the integrity of the engine cover. From my chemist prospective, I'd use a solution of Dawn dish soap or any any other surfactant and water and spray it down, and then spray it afterwards with water. Do not use organic solvents. If you can't pronounce the name, don't use it on plastics or polymers.
