Shang-chi was a little disappointing...

My issues were that although the film addresses the sexism his sister faced, and clearly alluded that she was stronger than Shang Chi, the film largely focused on depicting Shang Chi as the main savior of Ta Lo. So that was very confusing. She was literally by his side on the dragon fighting to save Ta Lo.
Even the dialogue from Michelle Yeoh giving Shang Chi and his sister their suits or armor only was directed at Shang Chi. “Your mother cared so much about you…she knew this day would come so she prepared this for you…” (Michelle Yeoh saying this to Shang Chi while his sister is right next to him)
Another issue I had was the lack of expression after Tony Leung’s character died. Simu didn’t react at all, nor did his sister. That made the death feel fake. That reaction would make more sense if the father was practically a stranger to his kids, but clearly Simu still cared for him, and secondly, technically his father helped him in his last moments alive by giving him the rings, you would have to feel conflicted with deep pain in that moment right?
And the end scene where they’re at the bar and Simu says “yeah..we lost some good people that day..” not even mentioning his father was just bizarre to me or a scene depicting conflicting feelings of grief over the father..just poor realism.
There are so many things that could have gone better with this film. The first quarter of it was great. I didn’t even mind that it was another Asian American film centered around martial arts. But many things went downhill

So I agree with pretty much most of this, buuuut I have some mixed feelings on the idea of showing the audience Shang-Chi killing his mother's killer. Like, I think it's really interesting that we're shown so much of his childhood through flashbacks, including the very traumatic death of his mother, the traumatic training regimen he went through the traumatic vengeance his father took out on his mothers killers.... like, we're shown a heck of a lot of trauma he went through, so the omission of the scene of Shang-Chi taking vengeance feels very deliberate. Almost as if out of everything, that's the one thing he's unable to relive, the one aspect of his identity that he wants to run away from the most.
I think leads into another aspect I like about Shang-Chi. He feels like one of the few MCU heroes with a nuanced take on killing and one of the few heroes that regrets taking the life of someone who arguably deserved it. When he says he's going to kill his father, I really like how he delivers it. It's not "I'm going to stop him" or "I'm going to destroy him" or something to dance around the idea, but Shang-Chi in that moment is fully prepared to take the life of his father knowing full well how such an action will affect him, and I feel like we don't get that from other heroes (on that note, plssssss come to the MCU DD, it needs you).
Anyway, totally agree with you on the whole CGI spectacle. Personally, I'm a sucker for CGI dragons and will never complain about them ever, but I think the final confrontation between Shang-Chi and his father would've been way more impactful if the rings weren't involved and it was just a hand-to-hand fight boiling down to who is the better fighter, which would reveal just how much knowledge Wenwu was willing to pass onto his son and it would feel much more personal to me.
Overall I agree with the 6/10 rating, but at the same time I'm still hype for more Shang-Chi in the MCU going forward. You just know he's going to get some SICK fight scenes in the future
Also, congrats on 1k!! you deserve it man :D

OH wowww. I really like your take on the reason that they cut away from it is to visualize that he simply can't relive that one personal and traumatic memory. Honestly, I feel like you kinda changed my mind on that, so thank you ^_^, but in general I do think the movie cuts away too much or has a bitttt too much comedy and exposition. But yeah, even though I didn't love it or anything, I'm also really down for future Shang-chi movies or shows :) And thank YOU!! You've been one of my more avid supporters here and it really keeps me motivated to make these videos :D

    SPOILERS
I expected Trevor Slattery to be executed with an axe or something just to show how intimidating the *Real Mandarin* is.

You know... that would've been extremely cool haha. But yeah as soon as I saw him, I knew he was just gonna be a comedic relief character and that would be it. A little disappointing but oh well :/

I agree. It felt into the usual marvel(isms) and not in a good way... The jokes didn't land, and they usually shyed away from showing any deep emotion.

Yeah, I just wish they let it be it's own little kung-fu action movie instead of forcing this other stuff tbh

what put me off the most in this movie is the "war" fight scene, most of the soldiers/monsters just standing still wiggling left and right waiting to be hit while the few main characters doing the flashy fights. all the weapons and armor pretty much look like cheap LEDs Props, MC facial expression pretty stiff and most of all, wearing a sport shoes for the last fight while wearing a "costume" to fight make it look REALLY out of place. And then, as if it wasn't enough, in whole movie 100% flashy fight, ZERO wounds, no cut, no blood, not even dirt, pretty face stay clean for pretty much everyone. And most annoyed thing of all is that they pay more attention to the bus destroying expensive cars only, almost all from luxury brands, like, that was totally unnecessary? wish they pay more attention to others detail mentioned instead.

Very good but the fights outweigh the film

Yeah... The fights are utterly spectacular and I wish that the story/writing was able to contrast better with it ):
