I’m an Irish dancer and I want to try Scottish dancing. The arms up look very difficult and tiring. Beautiful dance. I appreciate it. Great job, dancers👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
As a former irish dancing who's currently learning it, it's great. There's a lot of similarities which is great but can be a bit confusing. I personally think it requires more stamina than soft shoe dancing but it's really fun
I learned the reason the Irish dancing has arms down and stiff close to body is during the British invasion centuries ago , did not allow immersion of Irish culture hence Irish dancing was banned yet the Irish continued to dance with arm by side so British soldiers from distance only saw jumping people up and down.
I thought there was a historical military connection - dancing used for athletic training. Regarding old time Scottish step dancing (Sean nòs in Ireland), it’s competitions that have formalised modern styles. I blame judges for trying to removing free style, but it lives on!
I've done both Irish and Highland dancing and I can guarantee you Highland Dancing is by far the hardest. It looks easy because it's slower but you think of the amount of balance amd strength you need when your jumping like an antilope in circles with your arms kept high in the air and your back completely stiff all while maintaining the absolute grace of a pure bred mute swan. Its hard..... its really flipping HARD!!! 😭😭😭😭
Wow as someone who never heard or seen what highland dance is before I really amazed. It looks like ballet n irish dance combined and ith is twice as complicated. Lovely performance
@see ya I know someone as an 8 year old who got a black belt in Taekwondo. They had to break through pieces of water-soaked wood. The way they practiced for that was by punching walls! 💗🌵
I must admit; this is the most elegant Scottish highland dance I have ever seen. It almost reminded me of the dance Felicié did from the movie "Ballerina".
I'm from Brazil, and although our cultures are quite different, I have a deep appreciation for Scottish music, dances, and games. I really enjoy the music because it helps me concentrate while studying. I hope to experience a Scottish festival one day! ❤🇧🇷
dierdre doyle...it,s a mix of nothing. it,s highland dance which precedes irish dance by at least a couple o hundred years and probably ballet. you might want to look up the irish dance steps borrowed from ballet.
My older sister did highland dancing for 12 years. (and then broke her foot but oops!) So for most of my life i did highland dancing too. i did it for 6 years. it was not my favorite but. i do really like the bagpipes. and haggis. idk why more americans dont like it. its so good! 😋
Amazing...guess you need some real spring in your tendons to do this...someone said the arms raised are representing the antlers of the mighty red deer....
I can't remember the name of the step... but do they no longer link arms and spin in a circle?! I always remember 95% of the other dancers attempting to fling me off of the stage during those parts.
we still dance the version with linked arms! (though not in covid times hahaha) that would be the “reel of tulloch”, and this version in the video is the “highland reel” :) the version we do usually depends on the year’s assigned championship steps!
Anyone have the name to the song being played? My art final is about highland fling and part of it includes having to collect songs of that genre and I am STRUGGLING to find any titles:')
The first tune is a 2-parted strathspey called "Molly Connell", composed by James Wark. The second tune, which starts at 1:21, is a reel called "Mrs. MacLeod of Raasay".
@@RustyTomato You're welcome. More commonly heard for this genre are "Devil in the Kitchen" or "Marquis of Huntley's Highland Fling". There is an article that may help you, which lists many more tunes. Look up *Bagpipe News Piping for Dancing Part 1* and see the article by Donald MacPhee. A quote from it: The Highland Fling is the most popular of all the Scottish highland dances. The type of tune that is played for the Highland Fling is the strathspey. The introduction is a four bar or 16 count intro and each step is equivalent to a part of music (eight bars or 32 beats). Dancers dance either a four step Highland Fling or six step Highland Fling. The tempo for the ’Fling is recommended at between 112-124bpm. As stated the tune type is the strathspey and the more popular or easily recognisable tunes for this dance for the dancer would be The Marquis of Huntly’s Highland Fling, Orange and Blue, and Devil in the Kitchen. Possible introductions for the Fling would be playing the last four bars of the first part or the second part and then playing the tune as written, keeping in mind as stated earlier eight bars or one part of music equals one step, so for a four step fling you would play a four bar intro and then four parts of a strathspey (two two-parted strathspeys) or for the six step Fling you would play a four bar intro and six parts of a strathspey.
В европейские игры пусть Бах этот танец включает вместо гимнастики, например. А там и в олимпиаду - чего уж! - мировое спортивное достояние английской колонии. 😂
Sad to see this wonderful bit of Western Civ relegated to the dustbin. I always like reel dancing, but it's not for the young people and sadly, the Scottish people are disappearing. Edinburgh looks like Islamabad these days.
The girl in the glasses got that one. Ladies more work on stamina and your core. Get to ballet lessons if you are not already doing so. Or get running, They were all running out of puff and the end.

As a former premier highland dancer, yes! It’s very hard, we need a lot of strength, muscle!
Wow as someone who never heard or seen what highland dance is before I really amazed. It looks like ballet n irish dance combined and ith is twice as complicated. Lovely performance
@mayanlogos92....this dance was around before irish dance which was adopted from scotland by the irish in the late 1800s.
I learned as a very young child. Love to watch now and recall at 80.
They make it look so easy! But as a dancer myself I can tell you IT IS NOT EASY
When your instructor screams "and shed and shed and toe and heel and toe and heel" and you have a panic attack...
@@bluehydrangea5506 so true 😂

In Norse lands and the bask regions this dance was seen, imagine coming from a frozen land and then to see Scotland in the mist.
