The vegan who gave Lisa some hope when the rest of the world teased her for not eating meat? They had a whole episode on immigration that told us all that if you support deportation you're getting rid of one of your best neighbors. Getting rid of him was some real short sight.

I also liked how the jokes about Hinduism were mainly about the American characters being dumb or ignorant. My favourite Apu moment was when Homer is...being weird about Apu's Ganesha statue, and Apu, in a very dignified and firm way, says: "Please do not offer my god a peanut."
The joke isn't "Ooo, weird foreign religion!" it's "Americans are ignorant about world cultures."

    Apu was:
    - A college graduate
    - Able to earn his American citizenship.
    - A volunteer firefighter
    - A vegetarian and made Lisa a better one by telling her not to judge people.
    - The only playable character in Hit and Run outside of the Simpsons family

After more years on this planet I've only learned more things that I am grateful for, and wish I had learned earlier in school. As a vampire-level-white guy, Apu is an inspiration to me too (and he should be to anyone). Look at him! Graduated top in a class of 7 million. Extremely knowledgeable about US history. When Homer says "democracy doesn't work", Apu gets annoyed at him for badmouthing the country Apu loves. Harder-working than... everyone. Worked 96 hours straight. Briefly became a ladies man but settled down. Takes pride in his heritage - even has a statue of Ganesha at the counter. He's one of the best characters in Springfield.
Anyway, great work on the special! (Also, I'll add that I'm moderate-left, so I didn't just enjoy the special because "people that I agree with = good = funny". IMO a measure of good comedy is "do people that disagree with me say that this funny?")

Here’s another one: Apu was a consistent voice of reason. He wasn’t a simpleton in a minstrel show, he was somebody whom many characters turned to for advice because he was knowledgable on a number of topics and one of the few stable adults around. That’s why I knew most of the people complaining about him probably hadn’t actually seen much of him in action. He owns a convenience store? That’s a harmful stereotype? I’m busting my ass working minimum wage (or less) at one of the few jobs in this shitty border town I’m qualified to do (options are severely limited when you don’t know Spanish), owning a convenience store sounds like a DREAM!

My dad has to give speeches to his department about trans identity despite it not going with his religious beliefs at all. He can work with people and be cordial but he has to swallow his faith for the firm. The company he works for is historically not supposed to be political at all, but corporate culture is starting to obligate it. It’s stuff like this that frustrate people enough to vote for a guy like Trump.

A person is a person. They're gonna have different opinions on things. Some right, some wrong. Are we so obsessed with finding like minded people that we are just going to ignore those with different opinions?
There are some people that I liked who I found out later had STUPID opinions about certain topics. Stupid to the point where I was pissed that they reached that conclusion about a particular subject. But you know what? I don't care anymore. If they're respectful to me, I will respect them.
We, as society, have forgotten what it means to respect people. We just take shit for granted. I'm very much writing this with myself in mind. I'm not the younger generation, but I'm old enough to understand the boomer side of things along with the younger gen. I feel blessed to be in this spot.

Wow, I watched his podcast without ever seeing his stand up. . . I already loved him but this is so good. I love him so much more now. This is exactly what comedy should be. Jokes that bring everyone together while also providing perspective and context. . . This is good. I was just talking with a friend earlier today coincidentally about the Simpsons. I grew up on that show. I think of the Simpsons like it is a family member giving me guidance. My personality and humor and political thoughts are all based on watching the Simpsons every day of my life until I finished high school and went off to college. .. so I was raised by the Simpsons. But I have no idea what they have been doing or saying for two decades. I have not watched the Simpsons for twenty years. How crazy is that? This one show made me who I am. And then once I was who I was, I stopped watching it. And now there is a whole new generation that has their own opinions. But all I want to do is get in a time machine and watch the Simpsons back when they were good.

I think The Simpsons handled the whole “Apu thing” really badly. As a “white dude”, I completely agree with Akaash. Apu was actually one of the richest characters who developed and gave a different perspective and it’s a shame the (somewhat justified) criticism was so narrow only looking at the “glass half empty”. For example, it was Apu that introduced Lisa to vegetarianism and the different views of Hindu culture. So now we don’t have that anymore, because his accent is “offensive” (and there are tons of bad accents on the Simpsons!)
Yes, his character was a lazy stereotype in the early days in particular, but ALL the characters in The Simpsons are stereotypes - it’s kinda the whole thing about the show. It’s a parody of America at large.
Just like almost everything in life there is a relevant Simpsons reference for this. Remember when Marge went on an anti cartoon violence crusade which ended up with the “Itchy and Scratchy Show” getting literally canceled. The lesson from that episode was “one person can make a difference, but they probably shouldn’t”

I'm still waiting for the controversy to erupt over Scottish (Groundskeeper Willie), Italian (the Italian chef), Mexican (Bumblebee Man), etc, stereotypes. The problem with outrage and cancel culture is that it lacks nuance or consistency. It's always just a bunch of bored children (and yes, some may chronologically adults, but emotionally they are still children) jumping on whatever is the current fashionable social media outrage bandwagon.

@@paulw5039 to be fair, no one asked for Apu to be cancelled and he wasn’t cancelled. Hank Azaria made a personal decision to stop doing the voice. That’s it. TBH, my issue is that one persons viewpoint is not necessarily understanding the full picture. Unfortunately most issues are complex and multi dimensional and you need people of good faith from different perspectives who want to have a discussion and actually understand what’s going on. That’s why I say the Simpsons handled it so badly, because the character and the show style are defensible, they just didn’t bother to engage and explain and try to persuade the audience

I ended up here the “usual” route: Rogan->Shulz->Flagrant 2->Rogan->Akaash Special, and I have zero regrets. I had a feeling this might be good, but no idea it would be great! Count me in as a fan!

Damn Akaash, the end was a mic dropping game changer for me. My family is from kerala, India. They come here broke and barely spoke English. I tell my friends and cousins similar things that you expressed. If our parents who barely spoke English, made it America with no money and worked hard to give us a better life, we should be doing the same, if not better. You're 100% right, we don't deserve shit. Go get it. Preach brother.

Stupidest shit I heard in my life. Just because your parents had it hard doesn’t make it okay to be racist to us. We should not be shamed for standing up for ourselves.
He should have the balls to say that to everyone, not just desis.

@@shinyguy1 that was not his point. Successful people has a particular mentality, "I should not expect others to hand me things, if I need to succeed I need to work hard".
And in today's society people use "I deserve things" just to be lazy.

@@ashs5612 pointing out inequities that Indian Americans face is not asking for handouts. I understood the message just fine. Indians don’t even bitch about that shit. You also ignored how I said he only directed it to Indians, not everyone.
Because in all honesty, there’s groups who get shit handed to them and it’s not Asians. Affirmative action makes us have to do better than all races, even whites. So advocating for equal standards is not asking a handout, it’s asking for an even playing field. As Asians we are constantly shamed for standing up for ourselves and this is an embodiment of coping with that. He’s just being a pussy who is saying what whites and blacks want to hear.
Keep in mind England fucked Indians but we don’t get special treatment there like blacks and Hispanics get in America.
Calling out any Asian group for complaining is insane, we do it the least. This message should be directed to black people and women.
