This is Xu Xin we've all been waiting to see. His backhand has improved a lot.
IMHO His backhand hasn't improved a lot, it seems that he just started to use it much often.

@@dickn.ormous1064 Yes, just coz ML knows him TOO well, lol. XX is now coached by Chen Qi instead of LGL. Surprise to see how Chen can unleash the best out of him. XX is now #1, well deserved after cloud walking these years. Doesn't matter he wins or not, we still adore and enjoy his superb skills around the court. Awesome talent, amazing athlete.

We don't hear so many Ohs and Ahs from commentators and spectators in other world-class matches. That shows how people are enjoying/adoring the skills of these superb players. Simply awesome, respectable and adorable.
It really pains me to see timo loose this way. He really seems to be in pain and somewhat lost his never giving up attitude in this match. But we have seen such comments on him many times but time and time again he comes back and proves us wrong. I hope he continues to play for as long as he can. Because he is truely a sportsman and inspiration for many tt fans. He is like the face of table tennis.

Congratulations to both, Xu Xin was the better player today. And penholder grip is still competitive!
Penhold should be superior... bat is more in line with palm of hand... no wrist bending is required on forehand & more wrist action can be incorporated into shots.
Only drawback is fingers on blade on RPB.

This is the complete form of Xu Xin, next rival Ma Long, can’t imagine how hard he practiced his backhand though. PS: Timo doesn’t seem to be in good condition, this game went out of my expectation..

rpb improvement for xu xin. glad to see the cloud walker/showman is back on his feet again. as for timo, i hope he’s doing okay. i know he’s getting older, and he’ll retire soon. miss seeing all the legends leave. but new legends will soon take their place. love them both :)💓

I love the style of Xu Xin, so I use CS blade. Xu Xin 's forehand is so strong, but now his backhand also improved. I guess I need to learn how to use backhand instead of traditional counter block.

I think the difference between this game and Boll's match against Yu Ziyang is that Xu Xin is far less temperamental and has that incredible forehand.

Spinmeister Timo really does not like playing ultra-spinny Xu Xin. Cannot find an answer to his style (but then, neither can most others!)
@00 00 Fair enough. Though, I meant more generally across their playing history, as I have never seen Timo get near him anyway, even though Timo has beaten, or pushed hard, most of the other top Chinese.

See now XX got his backhand stable, he's lethal, even to Ma Long I guess. Remember back in 2014 how XX was beating everyone. XX still got his already-best forehand, and now semi-WangHao-RPB. He can go to at least finals with this form.

riemikes, yep, yet butterfly releases rubbers and prices them even higher than the current batch of over priced rubbers. They now have a “hard” version, so they knew the cheaper priced Chinese rubbers had it right all along. Shame on them.

This upgraded game... & more aggressive & consistent RPB by Xu Xin must be a reaction to his disappointing performance at recent World Championships...⁉️
He's obviously decided he's got to step up & improve these shots & aspects of this style keeping him down or he will fade out of CNT...
I did see a video where Liu Guaoliang addressed National team & said Xu Xin's style is 'out-dated' so I assume that cut deep... but that video was back a year or two.
I assumed Liu Guoliang meant long range spin looping is less effective these days with new plastic ball... Some adjustment was obviously required from Xu Xin.

Timo is using the new butterfly Dignics rubbers, I have not seen him make so many mistakes in recent high pressure matches, hmm.
he's making mistakes because he's getting old, you can see from the forehand rallies that whenever he's given more time to breathe he plays fine, but in the situations where you need high reaction and explosion, he's getting too slow
Samuel Pardana, just general flicks and short top spins, most are missing the table, almost like his setup is off, funny thing is I find that Xu Xin also looses more points in rallies, he steps away from table giving himself lots of time to lob and chase down balls, but in rallies I see him loose more these days, but he seems to be on form for this Open.
