I can't believe Xu has transformed himself this late in his career but he has finally developed an elite RPB and just like we've always suspected, he's darn near unbeatable with that addition.

Cloud walker brings Thunder to the table. Better late than never. Seeing him taming the dragon in this final was one of the best moments of my life. He would still get to his old habbits when facing members of chinese team, and that would often spell his demise - he's clearly getting comfy going rpb against anyone and it bears fruit.

And the two to four defensive positions Xu Xin took against Ma Long - specifically where he was fishing and lobbing against Long's forehand loops and smashes were particularly entertaining when/where he eventually returned those Ma Long fast and strong shots with crazy backhand loops and BH counters, again away from the table, followed by several fast and spinny counter loops
Wow so happy for xu xin. Around last year everyone thought he is past his prime but somehow he is able to evolve and become number one again. His backhand is super deadly now. Well it's never too late Xu xin. Keep on going
It's not yet Wang Hao level of RPB, but given some more refining we might get another ultimate penholder in times when the style almost got extinct. And thanks for all the timecodes.

Xuxin proved that he can be a world champion. He showed constant stability more than ever. His miss shots were hard to catch. I think he deserves to be a next gold medal guy at Tokyo Olympic. Very unique style but strongest skills and strategies. Perfect footwork, endless rocket forehand shots in a row, incredible agility, unpredictable chop blocks, stable but very strong backhand even with penhold. I will treasure your autograph I got at the last year.

Ma Long is obviously going to participate in the singles (unless injuries or something similar, of course), since he won in 2016. The second player from China is probabaly going to be either Xu Xin or Fan Zhendong. I’m not sure who I personally think deserves it more
Nah, he lost to Mizutani in Rio and to Gauzy at WTTC. FZD on the other end never lost to a non chinese in majors. And that's more important for coaches.
This is truly a battle of the titans, two of the GOATs going at it. TT at its best. So happy to see XX come out on top. As everyone has commented on, his backhand is now just as devastating as his FH.
Xu Xin had to improve his backhand just to defend against a backhand attack. Xu Xin will still use his forehand to win points. He will not intentionally get into backhand rally. His forehand is incredible one hit win !
It's just incredible to see a top player like Xu Xin could still have improved big time in the last few months! His forehand is undoubtedly No 1 in the world and if he can keep his RBH at current level, he may well get a singles tickets in Tokyo 2020, which by the way is pretty sad that a player like him may not be able to play Olympics!
Xu Xin has brought penhold style to a new level. He is like a combine of Ma Lin and Wang Hao now. Solid in both wings. ML won't be able to beat Xu Xin so easily in the future.

What a final match! Long time no see Ma long has been beaten by pen holder player in the final. I think one of most difficult is to overcome an opponent who always beat you. Started watching Xu Xin since his 14 when he first beat Wang liqin in a Chinese team iner game. Now he's having another best year since 2015 approximately...especially the back hand...8:20 so impressive

Xu Xin being able to score points with his reverse penhold backhand (rpb) is amazing. He should have had this backhand years ago (Xu had a very good rpb as a kid). He has confidence there now. The victory was really set up by Xu's serving. Ma Long couldn't place it short and low enough to force Xu Xin to push. Xu was able to 3rd ball loop kill quite a few. And on Ma's serve, Xu used his backhand to topspin well enough that Ma didn't have an easy 3rd ball loop. And Xu's counter looping is just swerving so wickedly that Ma is not on top of the counter looping rallies like he usually is.
I know Xu Xin is the reason this video is so popular, looking at his meteoric rise this year, but I do enjoy how much Ma Long's game has evolved. He has developed chops, placement shots and he's thinking more. I remember watching Ma Long for the first time and he used to just out topspin you. Now his game has nuance, which is really nice to see.
Ma Long already had a spot on Olympic 2020, so Xu Xin and other Chinese players have to do their best. To be honest, Xu Xin had played really well lately ( except World Championship ) , he won this match cuz he needs it. I think Xu Xin's good results recently can really be attributed to the fact that he realizes the next year's Olympics, if he ever qualifies for it, is gonna be his swan song. xu xin, won and absolutely deserved it. ma long was playing 100% but he was overwhelmed. i think the confidence of being #1 and plus whatever that has awakened a better version of him, has made him a true #1 in the world.. i hope he has a long streak and keep it going. nothing is worse than be amazing. but can never beat that 1 guy and you both get old together and retire without ever reaching that spot. but he earned this one.
I'm a very passionate fan of Ma Long, but it seems as if he has lost his hunger for the game at the moment after winning his third world title and China Open. Of course, no one can count him out in the biggest stages, such as WTTC and Olympic Games, but one must wonder if he has enough fuel in the tank to win his second Olympic Gold next year in Tokyo. Only time will tell, especially considering that he'll most likely get his opportunity to defend his title there.

I love ma long, I don't think I've ever seen xx so confident in his game than in this tournament. I think he actually broke ma longs spirit in this game. Ma long didn't play his best and looked like he had given up towards the end. Xxins all round movement was much better and I don't think Ma expected such a match. Love the Dragon, probably the G.O.A.T, but Xxins performance here was simply outstanding. Right now Xu is the best player in the world. Love watching him. God I want to keep talking about these 2 players. Love it.❤
What a match!! The level of play in the first 3 sets was just out of this world, both played at an insane level, perhaps even above anything I've seen before, including during the best FZD-Ma long matches. After the third set, ma long's level obviously dropped a little bit but still. Xu Xin having a BH now makes world of difference, what a player!!!
After the WC he started to play more backhand and he is playing it more agressive..Xu is playing better..it will be interesting to see how will he play when it really matters againts Lin,Liang,Fan and Ma long..if he is going to use his backhand like here and in last 2 tournaments..we could maybe see a new World champ...
Man xx is really on a roll. I think in a previous interview lgl said xx is amazing but can sometimes get into the "show man mode" and get distracted. But now xx looks super focused on the game with deadly precision and strategy

I wanted ma long to win again but xu xin came more hungry and more mature

Question from someone who just started watching the sport: Why is the point (at 2:04) awarded to Ma Long despite the ball hitting his bat outside bounds. I was under the assumption that if the ball hits your bat even if it does not bounce on your table, you'll lose the point.
XX got the touch, more stable in all round techniques. It's always enjoyable to watch ITTF finals with these players with unforced errors hardly exist, it's like enjoying an art shows.

The victory was really set up by Xu's serving. Ma Long couldn't place it short and low enough to force Xu Xin to push. Xu was able to 3rd ball loop kill quite a few. And on Ma's serve, Xu used his backhand to topspin well enough that Ma didn't have an easy 3rd ball loop. And Xu's counter looping is just swerving so wickedly that Ma is not on top of the counter looping rallies like he usually is.

I know Xu Xin is the reason this video is so popular, looking at his meteoric rise this year, but I do enjoy how much Ma Long's game has evolved. He has developed chops, placement shots and he's thinking more. I remember watching Ma Long for the first time and he used to just out topspin you. Now his game has nuance, which is really nice to see.
Ma Long already had a spot on Olympic 2020, so Xu Xin and other Chinese players have to do their best. To be honest, Xu Xin had played really well lately ( except World Championship ) , he won this match cuz he needs it.

@OVM watch it again, you'll see Xu Xin ( like me ) noticed what Ma Long was trying to do too. That's why he wasn't too excited after won the match, but still i think Xu Xin appreciated what his friend did.

I think Xu Xin's good results recently can really be attributed to the fact that he realizes the next year's Olympics, if he ever qualifies for it, is gonna be his swan song. As much as I like FZD I'm gonna be rooting for him. He's really talented and entertaining but is always seen as the third wheel.

xu xin, won and absolutely deserved it. ma long was playing 100% but he was overwhelmed. i think the confidence of being #1 and plus whatever that has awakened a better version of him, has made him a true #1 in the world.. i hope he has a long streak and keep it going. nothing is worse than be amazing. but can never beat that 1 guy and you both get old together and retire without ever reaching that spot. but he earned this one.

I'm a very passionate fan of Ma Long, but it seems as if he has lost his hunger for the game at the moment after winning his third world title and China Open. Of course, no one can count him out in the biggest stages, such as WTTC and Olympic Games, but one must wonder if he has enough fuel in the tank to win his second Olympic Gold next year in Tokyo. Only time will tell, especially considering that he'll most likely get his opportunity to defend his title there.

I love ma long, I don't think I've ever seen xx so confident in his game than in this tournament. I think he actually broke ma longs spirit in this game. Ma long didn't play his best and looked like he had given up towards the end. Xxins all round movement was much better and I don't think Ma expected such a match. Love the Dragon, probably the G.O.A.T, but Xxins performance here was simply outstanding. Right now Xu is the best player in the world. Love watching him. God I want to keep talking about these 2 players. Love it.❤

Question from someone who just started watching the sport: Why is the point (at 2:04) awarded to Ma Long despite the ball hitting his bat outside bounds. I was under the assumption that if the ball hits your bat even if it does not bounce on your table, you'll lose the point.
