    Thank you so much for the explaining this. I have had synths for some years but mostly just experiment by ear etc but in the last year I have been trying to understand what I am doing. It still confuses me but this helped a lot since I do understand the ADSR concept (finally) and now I can apply it to my new Jd-08. Very much appreciated!! Also I just subscribed too !

    Thanks for walking through the envelop generator on the JD-08 and demonstrating the bi-polar characteristics of the TVF. It will be interesting to see what new sounds can come from using the envelope.

    Excellent video! I'm just getting into synths and was pretty lost even with the JD-08 manual. Thank you for demystifying the envelope filters/section. Please continue this series!! I'd love to see a video explaining how to use Waveform Offset (oscillators) to the right of the Palette controls. Actually a video explaining all the LFO options would be awesome. Thanks again!

      Absolutely. I’d be more than happy to explain the LFO section. LFOs are amongst my favorite modulation types. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to upload content this weekend. Thank you for the support!

    Nice video, thank you. Always been a bit puzzled by the envelope. I´m very interested in the JD-08 but i´m always a bit afraid as most of the videos of it or the JD-800 sound like 90´s cheese. How far can this thing actually be pushed and how gritty and dirty can it get? I understand it has PCM samples of regular sawtooth/square/triangle etc but beyond that is it only useful for pads? I like my synths nasty like the og Microkorg/MS2000 or the Wasp so would this even be for me?

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another excellent question. For this I will have to demonstrate the overdrive and distortion/saturation capabilities of the unit. You’ve given me an idea for a future video but to answer your question, it can get a little dirty. I will show you how to dial in the parameters in one of my future videos. Thank you for the support!

      @@dncmusic8070 yeah that would be cool. its one thing nobody seems to demonstrate just how the JD-08/800 sounds when used as a more straightforward subtractive synth etc

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. No. You don’t have to have a controller however it does help. I would recommend either the Keystep or Keystep Pro by Arturia or (if keys are not important) the SQ-64 by Korg.

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another great question. You can loop sequencer patterns. Beyond that you can set patterns A and B to separate lengths for polyrhythmic sequences. It’s pretty neat. I’ll post a quick video on polyrhythms soon. Stay tuned and thank you for the support.

  • @edgarcortes

    Excellent tutorial, please keep them coming! This is the only Roland Boutique that really interests me at the moment and your clear explanation was great.
    One needlessly drawn out question if it's ok with you:
    How does the JD-08 handle manipulating the fader values within the same patch since the 4 tones and envelopes share the same faders? For example if the T1 fader was half way down on Pitch Env but it was all the way up for TVA once you click the "Envelope type" button does the value stay the same or jump to the current position for the type of envelope chosen? Even better if the unit has another clever way of handling this fader-sharing.
    My favorite part about this synth is the 4 separate tones aspect of the original 90's design. But it seems that manipulating the many values within the tones with shared faders might be challenging by just watching all the videos about this unit I can.
    Jeez too much fader talk and for a question, but I guess that's what this little beast is all about. I don't have access to one of these in Colombia so I have to buy it and import it, so knowing more than a bit in advance really helps.
    Thanks and again keep the great content coming!

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Excellent question. The values of the faders will not jump to new positions after switching modes. If the the TVA T1 fader is set to 5 and you switch to TVF mode, TVF T1 will not jump to 5. It remain just as you saved it until you move the fader again. I’m hoping that helps.

    • @edgarcortes
      @edgarcortes ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dncmusic8070 That’s great and just about the last thing I needed to know to press buy! Thanks so much, your content is the kind of deep dive stuff I’m looking for. From what I’ve seen and researched this synth is the most experimental-friendly, “budget” and portable in the market with the most hands on control, would you agree or do you have another recommendation? After messing around with the Roland cloud jd800 trial from an init patch I was able to create huge experimental drones, weirdness and modern pads beyond the 90’s presets with that 4 tone workflow and those great and some goofy waveform samples.
      It really can’t be more than 400us or in Colombian pesos I’ll go broke! Jajajaja

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My apologies for the delayed response. As far as experimental, multi-timbral and multilayered sound design goes, this is the way to go. The only other synth that I can think of that gives me same experience is the MiniFreak by Arturia however the JD-08 is more affordable and gets the job done (especially if you like tangible buttons and knobs). I've recommended the JD-08 to people close to me and they are happy with the purchase. Let me know if this help with the decision making.

    • @edgarcortes
      @edgarcortes ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dncmusic8070Thanks for your response! I purchased the JD, in fact I just got it from the importers so today is my second day with it and couldn’t be happier! You’re completely right the sound of the thing is wonderful and I love creating patches from scratch, the possibilities are really endless with those 4 tones and infinite polyphony, frankly nothing 90’s about it except the old presets. No other synth now really has this machine’s originality and character, perhaps the Minifreak as you say.
      Right now I’m binge re-watching all tutorials on it, including your video so please keep more content coming! 🎉

    Thank you so much for this needed tutorial/walkthrough. This thing was pretty complex for me so this helped A LOT. So TVF and TVA stand for Time Volt Filter/Amp or something similar? Please do more for the JD08 and make it a series so we all learn alongside you

    • @dncmusic8070
      @dncmusic8070  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the support. You are correct TVF and TVA are essentially the VCF (voltage-controlled filter) and VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) respectively. I plan on doing more soon. Let me know if there is something that you would have me go over. Again, thank you for tuning in!
