You have some of the best reactions I have seen on TH-cam. Based on this song, you may want to check out "Walkin' in Memphis" by Marc Cohn. You'd love those lyrics too. Great job, Britt.
Being from Memphis I have heard this so much growing up and Elvis was EVERYWHERE. I second listening to Walkin' in Memphis! It's still a favorite of mine❤
I was born in 1972. My mom was growing up in the middle of the Elvis craze. Therefore, I am an Elvis fan as well. She used to have a huge painting of Elvis painted on black velvet. I loved that picture. I swear those black velvet paintings were possessed by Elvis himself. You could look in those eyes and feel it in your soul. They were very popular paintings in the late 70's and early 80's.
Pictures of Elvis printed on a black velvet background were once very popular and were everywhere. Nowadays you are likely to see them at flea markets or antique shops. Great reaction! Thanks
I ultimately found two of them that weren’t cheesy looking. One was of him in the black leather suit. The other was akin to him up to the microphone at Sun. It was very subtlety done. Never saw another one like it. After all these years, never found two I’ve loved more than what I’ve got.
I suspect double meaning in describing Elvis as "Black velvet". As in also meaning how he sung black style music (rock&roll etc.), sung in a black style, and even danced in a black ghettos style (where he grew up).
@@memphisflashfan1 The Velvet Elvis paintings I saw were all cheesy-looking. When I first visited my parents who had moved from Memphis to South Carolina in 1989 my mother took me to a little store on Saint Helena Island. There were Velvet Elvis paintings on the walls. I remember saying to her, "We can't get away from Elvis on Velvet". But hey, the song is great and her voice is fantastic. :) Nice tribute and nice reaction!
At the time, Alannah said it referred to the first ever public performance Elvis did, at a county fair. He wore a black velvet shirt & his hair was still dirty blonde. He died of black shortly after. It's on You Tube. ( its b/w footage).
She has a fantastic voice! Thanks for your reaction. The car was symbolic. Elvis used to give Cadillac's (cars) away out of the blue to people in Memphis. He'd see a couple at a car dealership and say "would you like one of those?" and then buy it for them. I'm not kidding.
I met Elvis when I was a kid. My mother used me to get his attention because he always liked kids. When he got out of the car to do rehearsals for a concert he was doing mom put me on her shoulders and told me to yell Elvis. I did and he saw me and went through a small crowd to come shake my hand. I had no idea who he was because I was young. But, I remember him like right now. He literally did not look real. He look like one of those dolls with perfect features and perfect hair. I could feel his positive energy. I remember he had a great smelling cologne and the scent stayed on my hand for the rest of the day and my mother refused to shower me that day so she could smell my hand the rest of the night. He said to me hi buddy how are you ?? I said I'm ok. He said ok ?? No !! I want you to be happy and not ok. I said ok. He said I told you not ok. I said ok. He started laughing and put his hand on my head and rubbed it for a moment and he then walked in. My mother damn near had a heart attack after he left because she started to cry uncontrollably. So, I've been lucky I've met in person people like Elvis, Madonna, Michael Jackson at Madison Square Garden, Tupac Shakur four days before he was killed and even Robin Williams. Britt here is another video dedicated to Elvis that you will love to react to. It is Elvis daughter singing a sing to her dad. It is really good...th-cam.com/video/pAEpuJtgzEg/w-d-xo.html
I’m a seventy five year old and never knew this song was about Elvis. I always loved the song for its driving beat…first and foremost…and her incredible voice. They say you learn something every day and now I’m a little embarrassed that I didn’t know this.
Alannah is a Canadian Rock icon, in my humble Canadian opinion. I wanted her hair. Back in the 80's it was her and Sass Jordan who proved that women can be rock singers. Both are Canadian and both are incredible. Sass Jordan's Make You a Believer is a must see. Alannah does have many other hits here in Canada.
The phrase about "Love Me Tender" refers to his 50's hit song by the same name and his first movie role by the same name. Recommend you watch the movie to see a very young Elvis in a dramatic role that takes place in the Civil War.
Hey, for the record, I'm over 50 and know all these songs you check out. I had NO IDEA this song was about Elvis. After all, this song came out before we had google to check things out. I have always loved that slow groove - the feel of a very hot southern afternoon. So, thank you for opening me to that bit of trivia. Makes the song even greater (somehow).
I was born in Memphis and was a small child when he passed. There are pics of me and my sisters standing outside of the gates of Graceland. My parents were huge Elvis fans. I’m named Lisa and people always thought I was named after Lisa Marie.
The incomparable Alannah Myles. Please check out her hit "Still Got This Thing For You." Not many have reacted to it. She rocks out to the max. And yes, she's wearing her leather in most of her videos. One of Canada's many vocal treasures. :)
Fun to see this come up on my feed Britt, 1y later. He was something. My mom had one of those black velvet Elvis paintings. I played this song for her and she asked to hear it a few more times after that. ❤
I was 19 when this song came out, and she had all the boys feeling like the girls did for Elvis, I can still remember seeing this video for the first time.
Nobody did it like Alannah did it. I had SUCH a crush as a teenager... I absolutely recommend any and all of her stuff from her channel. I always prefer to suggest starting with any artists' older/ beginning material first and working your way up to the present. :)
In Canada her music got a lot of radio play, "Still got this thing" or "Love is" were big, one of my favourites, a bit softer, but still with her raspy voice is "Lover of Mine", I don't recall it getting radio play but liked it from her album.
At the time , Alannah said the black velvet referred to the first public performance Elvis ever did, at a county fair. He wore a black velvet shirt & his hair was still dirty blonde . He dyed it black shortly after. The b/w footage is on You Tube.

You’ve very quickly become one of my favorite reaction channels to watch. I just love your personality, your obvious love for music listening to all genres and you’ve got a million $ smile! I’ve always absolutely loved this song!
Elvis was blessed with more than a one of a kind voice but the incredibly rare ability to connect with his fans to make us feel like he's thinking of only you when he's singing. A lot of other artists have a lot of great talents and abilities to marvel at but Elvis has a quality that no one can quite explain except to say he's Elvis.
Your voice was so beautiful when you mirrored Allannah's ending notes. It was a distinct pleasure to watch this reaction! I love when you do any music from the 20th century. Your joy is so evident! 💚

I saw Alannah in concert when this song first came out (she was opening for Robert Plant on one of his solo tours). She sounded great live, her whole set was really good. I've watched all your Elvis reactions & love them! But they're 70's Elvis (again, love it!) but you should also check out early Elvis in the 50's when he first took the world by storm. I was a baby when that happened. But I saw Elvis in concert twice in the 70's. I got a good close look & living, breathing, three-dimensional, he was the most beautiful person I've ever seen. It was hard to believe he was even real. And his voice was simply glorious live. I was about 19 & into Zeppelin & the big Rock bands of the day but I'd grown up hearing Elvis, seeing his movies etc. He was a true living legend & I'm so happy I got to experience him in person. Also, about this song..both Alannah & the songwriter have said the song title has nothing to do with those kitschy velvet paintings. It's about the overall mystique of Elvis. Loved your reaction. I remember liking this when this was originally played on radio especially for the bass. Then heard it again few years ago and was disappointed that great bass was destroyed by compression that radio stations have.
She played a free concert in my home town; her first after a serious car crash. Her voice in person is so much better than the recording, even the memory of it still gives me goosebumps. She is still one of my favorite female vocalists of all time.

I subscribed primarily for your AJ reactions but I do like your others as well. I always loved this song but never really paid attention to what it was about. Now that I know, it is obvious. Keep up the great reactions.
Elvis bought everybody he met a Cadillac. March 1955 when Elvis bought his first Cadillac. This was a testament to his success. Elvis bought over 200 Cadillacs for family and friends and just random people..Elvis was..TCB
I'm proud to have her CD, "Rockinghorse" in my collection. Back when I co-owned a little coffee shop (and could therefore pick the music when it was my shift), "Livin' on a Memory" and "Lies and Rumors'" would get regular play.
Awesome reaction. I remember when this song came out , it took a half dozen listens before I figured out who it was about. Love her voice ! Great job as always !!
"Black Velvet" connects to Elvis Presly in 3 ways. 1. It is a name of a wiskey that he enjoyed. 2. He used a hair dye that was called "Black Velvet" and 3. After his death many artists painted his portrait on black velvet cloth. The car is a Cadilac of the era when he first rose to fame, although it is not the custom pink convertibale he drove. This song is as pure Missisippi Deltaland Blues as I have ever heard yet it was written by 2 Canadian and sung by a third. I think elvis would have enjoyed it..
Yeah me too if I was around during his time then I would have followed him around and just be around him the closest I got was recent’s visiting Graceland and being near his graveside ❤ just a peaceful place
I still remember where I was working and who I was walking with to have lunch when we Heard Elvis was gone, was a lovely day up until then. . a workmate and I heard it from some schoolgirls as we passed by them. . . this was in New Zealand
I was a lil kid when I heard this on radio and it was the first time I knew how to be in love with a voice, my mom saw it and bought me a CD with the song, this was in 1992 just before internet became a household thing so it wasn't like one could just go on the internet and listen to songs as we pleased 🙂
Think of how many paintings of Elvis had been painted on "Black Velvet"? They were everywhere when I grew up! Every where!
So many songs about Elvis ,this is the best.

Yeah me too if I was around during his time then I would have followed him around and just be around him the closest I got was recent’s visiting Graceland and being near his graveside ❤ just a peaceful place
This was one of my favorite songs when it came out! Still love it
I still remember where I was working and who I was walking with to have lunch when we Heard Elvis was gone, was a lovely day up until then. . a workmate and I heard it from some schoolgirls as we passed by them. . . this was in New Zealand
I was a lil kid when I heard this on radio and it was the first time I knew how to be in love with a voice, my mom saw it and bought me a CD with the song, this was in 1992 just before internet became a household thing so it wasn't like one could just go on the internet and listen to songs as we pleased 🙂
She actually sings hard rock. This was her only blues song. The original video, that I wish I could see,was really good at showing her attributes.
I saw Elvis about a year before he died in Norman Ok. I have to say I will never forget it and Yes I am old.
You are very articulate and intuitive when reacting. I love that. Beautiful lady you are a favorite reactor of mine.
