you say this as though people didnt 'live off the grid' for thousands and thousands of years before modern civilization. If they're capable of building their first house, i'm sure they will be capable of building a second, bigger house with the help of their older children
They can just build another yurt. Or two. As for education, if they did want to home school and not send their kids somewhere, then there are home school education packs that people get that follow many large education boards curriculum. Some are digital but if they really wanted they could print them. Although I would think since there are no neighbors around for them to play with, that it would be a good idea to send them to school and not home school.
This is amazing, like a dream. I wonder why you don't use solar power for electricity, it would be much more efficient for heating water, cleaning water and general emergency stuff.
Heating with solar electricity would be very costly as even a small electric water heater needs 1500 watts or more instead for water heating you want to use a solar thermal panel.
+Patchuchan didn't they just recently invent solar power batteries to come out soon? so your panels will charge your battery all day when not using electricity so surely it wouldn't cost that much
Well, to some people this video might be very weird. But I have watched it and nothing surprises me in particular. This is the daily reality in rural Africa (well of cause it is a little worse than this). The out-door toilet, never going to grocery stores to buy food and being totally dependent on your own crops and stock farming, the medium of exchange being agricultural products and money used in very rare situations, is the normal way of life from where I come from.
+Qhawe Teyise This is normal to me, too. But then, this video is American and they like to crow about everything they do in that country. It also seems like that is the country where most of the people need to change the way they're living, so it's nice to see some of them making a positive change.
Very deep rural America is this way too to a lesser extent. Normally there is still electricity, as that is very readily avaliable here (although you can see this family doesnt have any) but there isnt always a water system or septic system
The comment section here is like a bunch of Wuss! Most people would be happy to live a life like that. Free from pollution.Don't need to go work in an office everyday and live in a consumerist society. Here you can see the amount of skill they are forced to acquire , this is fantastic. They are making the most of accumulated human knowledge for e.g. electricity generation , fabric making , composting , building , sanitation ,cattle rearing and water management. The kids have a great place to learn, plus the parents look educated so they can teach the kids way better. Self sufficiency! The only problem is what about health issues.
Most people like the internet good heating better food ect. Face it humanities new strong is intelligence not hippy hill Billies living in the mountains.
Atlasmas Samuel101 "intelligence" as in you being lazy and society doing almost everything for you? Right now I live semi-off grid, with some electricity and not consuming or as unhealthy / unhappy as when I was in a big city. The way we live is unsustainable. For everyone to just to live as a middle class and have enough resources to sustain that life style (not even talking about the rich people), we would need more than a planet and half.... And sadly everytime we find a breakthrough to better feed the people and make life more affordable, we start adding a ton more people and multiplying without much control... Mentalities need to change and fast. Also , I say we need more people / communities off the grid or living in more natural ways. We can't have all eggs in one basket. When an Apocalyptic event occurs, those " hippy hill Billies" will be for the most part the people surviving and rebuilding human society.
Herp Derp Most people in the city never learn from the perspective of living off - grid on near nature. You're basically Isolated from that kind of knowledge for most of your life. And till people become productive individuals, they would just use TV or the internet for entertainment or procrastination purposes anyway, specially in a society were we are so near yet so far one from the other. Technology and so called social norms/pressures have made people far more isolated than before. You can be in a crowd and feel more lonely than ever... disconnected from the people next to you, even family and specially disconnected from nature and the planet.
+perfecttrunks2000 I live off grid and am a full time homesteader. Home school three children; grow food; AND cut tonnes of firewood. Oh - and I don't have beard... (It must have blew off in that windstorm last week - you think?)
I am actually perplex about this whole idea. Does the kids have interaction with other kids? Do they get enough of diverse social interaction other than mom dad and brother/sister? Do they keep up with news and get proper education? If so I tip my hat to you.
A lot of people in rural Australia live like this. My parents for example built there own huge straw bale house. It has solar electricity, solar water heating, a composting toilet, wood fire heating, and uses rain and bore water. No outside inputs. Its not that hard to do, and you don't need to isolate yourself completely.
No problem! My wife and I raised 5 kids off grid, 4 graduated college and youngest daughter is about too. Planning and working together makes daily chores easier
I dont understand how people are getting mad at these people for living a different kind of life. It's like you're so dependent on modern comforts that you can't even begin to see a life different from your own. You are the type of people who don't see how lucky we are to live like this. We live a life of excess and decadence in comparison to the rest of the world. You are the reason the rest of the world hates us.
***** The kids will not be more educated than if they go to school.(which they do) They would not be able to do anything skillful that requires teaching like medicine or the arts.
Add on a source of electricity such as solar panels... build on another yurt for the kids as they grow older... make sure them kids are doing well in school... that is the life. Gotta make sure you got the internet to watch some TH-cam when your done with dinner.
I like your thinking. For me, having no electricy & internet would be completly unacceptable. Its completly backwards. What if these kids later decide they want to live in a city ? Going to city would be like going to Mars. Having internet also gives you an oppurtunity in getting an education remotely. I know society/nations have their problems, but you can't simply poop on the perks society has to offer. You get good at something, you get a job, you produce, you elect a good leader, you work like 70% of time, society is self sustaining. Nothing that mattered was ever produced by being a tech-rejecting hermit.
This is what we do in Finland during summers, many of us own a cottage far away from our homes and we go there to really relax. Look up "kesämökki" (summer cottage) on google image.
illyounotme i could see that if they had actual resources such as books lol plus we dont even know how knowledgeable either parent is to offer an education.
I feel like there are more efficient ways of doing some stuff. Gathering water in particular. You could put a tank up high that gathers rain water and then filter it like they do in earthships.
Living doesn't have to be simple just because you live offgrid, electricity and water can be managed on sight, and when you need food you can travel and buy in bulk so you are always stocked up.
While I admire the courage to take the step and have a lot of respect for the family for their decision and how they are sticking to it, I only have one question. How will you manage the need for things you can't make yourself over the long run (e.g. tools, books and clothes). Once again, I do admire the family and wish them the very best of happiness and luck. But I can't stop asking myself "what happens when metal tools will break or simply end?", "close eventually get worn out and tear, how do you get new ones without money?" and of course "it's fine to leave electricity and digital communication behind, but what about books?"
The bad thing about this and homeschooling is that it can enable abuse. The kids have nowhere to turn for support. (Yes I saw the channel saying they aren't homeschooled but it doesn't matter, it's connected in people's minds because unschooling/homeschooling is also an alternative thing)
I feel bad for the children having to live in a tiny hut and without all the modern marvels and conveniences technology has to offer. While the other children are having fun playing the latest Halo game on their console, they'll be out in the forest counting ants...
From much personal experience you DON'T have to leave everything behind to go off grid. solar power and hot water, wind, water tanks and composting toilets are just some of the ways off grid can be less difficult. A well designed system of living does not have to be hard or on grid! The family in the video still have some outside inputs, like the Petrol (gas) for there huge gas guzzling truck, they would be better off using the same or less fossil fuel as LPG to power a small cooker and standby hot water heating. We also use bicycles as a big part of our transport.
I'd be curious how the kids are doing with no other kids to play/socialize with. And let's be honest, its not the family's dream, its the mom's dream. The rest of the family is just following behind her, not with her.
I wanted a simpler life (leaving the rat race) so I started to research different options, living like this family or just minimize my life I have now, I found out that living in the city (with a paid for home) was a lot cheaper in the long run, power $80 month $30 water $15 garbage $25 phone (republic wireless) total $150 + food, no car I bike everywhere, I personally think that my way is much easier, call me crazy but I love all the perks a modern American lifestyle provides (shower every day)
I think there is a lot more people living similarly to this than the average person would know. They are the homeless, people living under our cities, people just pitching tents or parking trailers in the woods. There are people that live @ camp grounds year round without electricity. There are Amish that have ne modern appliances or electricity. There are people living in the eastern hills of Kentucky and the hills of West Virginia that live basically this way They are all over America. Hey give me my pick up, my mangy dog and a cabin in the woods and I would be one of the happiest guys ever.
I live in Boston and if I was them I would go closer, they could stay in New England, other than the coast and some inner cities and their metropolis its mostly wilderness, western mass, most of Vermont and New Hampshire and 90% of Maine and maybe 10% of Connecticut
For a second there I thought y'all were going to talk about kids that are off the grid in China but when you didn't the first thing I thought was "there are so many things wrong with paying attention to some hippies in the woods while there are kids in China who will never get a stable life due to them being off the grid"
Hellough financial independence? you dont have any money. sustainable living? whats unsustainable about the way weve been living for the past hundreds of years? emergency preparedness? get some guns and food storage. more time at? doing absolutely nothing and alienating yourself from the world.
Well I guess it's all in the way you see it. I don't see why you wouldn't want to rely on nature for stability instead of a paycheck. Nor do I see the current method of burning finite fossil fuels sustainable. A consistent garden along with guns and food storage are certainly part of going off grid successfully. And your last point all revolves around what you prefer to do with your time. I prefer working the land with my family and community. Going off grid doesn't mean going to live in a cave all alone. In an intentional community it can mean a rather rich life. I'd rather feed livestock with my children than limit my time with them to 30 minutes at the dinner table each evening.
I think its a neat idea to live off the grid, but humans are very social creatures. It worries me that the kids might be deprived of a healthy social life. Social interactions with your family is important, but it is a very limited experience and one day the kids will have to be on their own. if they are deprived of a chance to develop their social skills and experiences with people outside their family it will greatly negatively impact their future. I appreciate the fact that they wanted to spend more time with their kids but there are many better and easier ways to do that, that would also benefit the kids much more than living off the grid.
good for them. I could do it but i would have to have a solar power generarted battery or something for some movies or my video games lol aside from that id love it too
i think a 12 volt solar charging system would give them some lighting & if enough some 120 volt stuff, i run computers and tv off solar! this is some power with out grid! i used 4 old boat batterys and a 40 dollar walmart bought schmocker inverter my first solar set up 3 panels and small inverter (i use for laptop in car now it to small to run bigger stuff),the whole was 420+ 40 plus cables 20 dollars 480 a price of a good deer rifle! the solar was portable i have bigger system for camping i upgraded system , my home use ,after i under stood how solar worked!
gatorred157 i also have a bigger system with same 4 battery's i started with for solar, for camping and boat used both solar charging system! i added 11 battery!s for my home use, i run lights & tv internet & computers desktop computers too! people tell you computers don't run on solar! mine do computer run 5 volt and 12 volts inside there made that way!! i use to repair computer's that how i know that!!!!
The thing to do if you care about this planet is to find a way to live in a small space not a forest. Teach your children to do the same and get the highest education possible. These people do not care about humanity and don't see the future their children have to live in. Don't escape, change things.
I don't feel like reading all comments, but how is the kids going to have a child good if they don't have friends? because younger or older siblings always never get a long to well.
I love the idea but I could not endure and be active enough to keep up with such daily jobs. I am willing to sacrifice to stay within the luxury of convenience.
My house is the last one this side of the mountain with electricity and internet. I have a friend who lives about a mile away who lives like this. I don't think I would mind so much but using a outhouse when it's -20 wouldn't be very fun. Still even though I have electricity and internet, I have a well and a blacksmith shop and a garden, and the power goes out about 3 times a month. I also invite you all to meet Ben Hewitt and his family they live about 20 miles away. benhewitt.net/
trade the mosin off. get a 12ga or even 20ga pump or 2 or 3 singleshot shotguns, used preferably. ammunitions cheaper, easier learning curve and capable of killing anything from mice to grizzlies. plus if you decide to start hunting for the larder...
Good video, but the title should reflect that this is part 1 of several videos... I like the channel, but it feels a little chaotic. Do you want to do Vice style reporting or make these artsy videos like "One Day In LA"? It feels inconsistent. Same problem with the Seeker Daily.
Hi Myko! Seeker is dedicated to the spirit of adventure and pursuit of wonder, a personal journey as people travel. There is a lot under that umbrella as we tour new locales uncovering forgotten stories, remarkable people and abandoned places, to ultimately better understand the world around us. Seeker Stories will hold our longer form videos, short documentary style and weekly shows. Seeker daily is a more informative approache with shows you can expect new episodes almost every day, if not every day!
No electricity? Why? This is stupid. If you can get clean, renewable, free energy from the sun, why would anybody not want to harvest it and improve his standard of living like this.
I feel like this is a poor representation of going off-grid. Families like this are why the government creates bogus regulation like needing all homes to be hooked to public power and water.
It should work! This is the only time we've heard of a problem there...try again! You won't want to miss the new episode, Part 2, coming out on tomorrow.
It takes a lot of courage to give up everyday comforts and trek into the unknown.
..... that is a mighty long shootin' iron!
Manuel Schneider
It was a Mossin Nagant, cheap gun, cheap ammo, tons of knockdown power.
Oseois for their purposes it was a good choice you can still get them in decent shape for less than 200 dollars
I don't think any of us could do this!
Hey, everybody, we're the family featured in this! Find more at www.estheremery.com or on our channel. Thanks for watching!
Courageous choice. I love to living off the grid. But for now we're stucked in this swamp (Italy, u know...).
I think it's fantastic. Wish you the best!
thought you had no electricity?! :O
Rockistar Exactly my thoughts!!!!

I can relate to the "absent father" feeling. I'm at work right now watching this video while someone else is taking care of my children. It sucks! I have no plans to go off grid, but we are saving for a nice long sabbatical so we can travel as a family. We are halfway through a 5 year debt payoff plan, with our goal being the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse going through the USA!

Don't live near a steam or su'in?
I wouldn't say a mosin would be my choice of rifle to take down a bear, but to each their own.
I live in Boston and if I was them I would go closer, they could stay in New England, other than the coast and some inner cities and their metropolis its mostly wilderness, western mass, most of Vermont and New Hampshire and 90% of Maine and maybe 10% of Connecticut
For a second there I thought y'all were going to talk about kids that are off the grid in China but when you didn't the first thing I thought was "there are so many things wrong with paying attention to some hippies in the woods while there are kids in China who will never get a stable life due to them being off the grid"
what was the dad's profession?
mosin for bear protection? well to each their own.
Yeah, I doubt that thing could take out a human let alone a bear.
I knew I heard a Ling. I just thought it was Lisa. I was wrong ! Laura sounds alot like her sister.
Looks like fun
ive always wondered wtf is the point of going off the grid? someone please explain.
+zaah haaz Human brain is a complex fucker.
+zaah haaz If it's done right, it means financial independence, sustainable living, emergency preparedness, more time at home with family, etc.
Am I the only one who noticed that the person in the picture had a Mosin Nagant?
Wow and respects
Damn its a real life George in the Jungle
They were an all-American family. Does it mean they are Native Americans who used to speak only 1 tongue before all the Union states were established?
I don't feel like reading all comments, but how is the kids going to have a child good if they don't have friends? because younger or older siblings always never get a long to well.
The interviewer was asking very stacked questions, I'm not sure I can take this seriously.
I love the idea but I could not endure and be active enough to keep up with such daily jobs. I am willing to sacrifice to stay within the luxury of convenience.
If the kids don't get an education they won't survive in any common world. It's a little sad. If they want anything else they won't be able to get it!
I feel like thats really unfair to do that to the kids. Especially taking away their social life like that
A Grand adventure
My dream is to live off grid far away somewhere in Alaska, grow a beard and live by my compound bow.
Am I a bad person for seeing this and thinking I could do a night raid on these people and pillage their tent and take all this belongings
+goofiegoofball You wouldn't get much
My house is the last one this side of the mountain with electricity and internet.
I'm pretty sure the husband is an architect.
Bible characters lived without electricity and plumbing. Evidently prior to the medieval times.
Is just me or has the wife lost her marbles?
I sooo want to be their neighbor
Poor you. Life is so hard...
No electricity? Why?
This is stupid. If you can get clean, renewable, free energy from the sun, why would anybody not want to harvest it and improve his standard of living like this.
I think it's very selfish because their kids are too young to decide whether they want to live off the grid or not.
I feel like this is a poor representation of going off-grid. Families like this are why the government creates bogus regulation like needing all homes to be hooked to public power and water.
What about soap or tissue paper?
Calvin Laganzon Did you catch part 2? It goes a little deeper into some daily activities and hygiene: th-cam.com/video/l0Huy1547po/w-d-xo.html
What happens when their children get older? I'm guessing they don't go to public school. It's almost foolishness.
MsDanceDiva234 They do attend public school
+MsDanceDiva234 It's not like you can't home school your kids or anything... Oh wait!
+MsDanceDiva234 why dont you ask them? fouch o matic off grid is their channel
I WANT TO SEE THE PART ABOUT THE BEAR !!!;_;

Vice Is better at when it comes to making these kinda videos

What happened next? This seems like an incomplete story.
