  • A lot of my older patients suffer from constipation. This is only worsened by surgery. Risk factors like anesthesia, immobility, dehydration, and narcotics can lead to constipation.
In this video I share the information I share with my patients to prevent post-operative constipation. It all starts with a high fiber diet, both soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Add in proper hydration by drinking enough water. When needed add in prune juice, coconut milk soup, sweet potatoes and lentils. If needed over the counter remedies like milk of magnesia, ducolax suppositories and occasionally fleets enemas are needed.
What I forgot to mention in the video is I have patient take colace daily around their surgery to aid with all of the things listed above.

As I mentioned in the video here is my favorite lentil, quinoa, carrot salad.
Add 1 Cup of cooked lentils with 1 Cup of cooked quinoa. Add 1 Cup of shredded carrots. Add 1/4 cup cilantro if desired.
    For the dressing:
    2 T red wine vinegar
    1 T curry powder
    1 tsp salt
    1 clove garlic
    1 inch ginger grated
    1 lemon - juiced
    ⅓ C EVOO

Incredibly helpful. I had to resort to Milk of Magnesia and it worked great. If/when I need to get my other knee replaced, I’ll focus more on hydration, mobility, and nutrition.

I took your advice and avoided narcotics. I took ibuprofen and tylenol at the same time, and it did just as you said, and I had very little pain. Very little!
You said 1+1=3, and that was so true. 🤗
