Ariana and Kelly's "That's my Jam,” [LIVE on the VOICE] - SINGER REACTS

- This is my reaction, analysis and breakdown of Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson performing the “that’s my jam,” medley from the voice. This was a super fun, impressionistic performance that displayed a lot of control over these ladies’ tones and stylistic elements. Many great pop hits in the medley that I completely forgot existed hahaha. Very fun to hear all the little ornamental differences among different styles and how both ariana and kelly shifted their sounds to recreate a different Pop diva’s iconic timbre. I really enjoyed this one and found it super enlightening! Loving the mixed belts we’re getting, and how diverse they can be in color. I also love Kelly’s voice and enjoyed finally getting to dive into it.
I am a jazz and R&B singer, saxophone player, and vocal coach. I have two degrees in Music, one in Music Education and one in Jazz studies/performance. Ariana Grande, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are all big influences of mine vocally. I think there’s a lot we can learn from picking apart performances and understanding the different nuances in the sound.

Hi! Thanks for reacting! One note to point out: Kelly is not actually a country singer, but a pop singer. But then again, she is so versatile that she is not restricted to any genre :)
Oh yes! I meant that first song she was singing is a country song, or at least sounds that way to me! But I know she’s a pop queen. You’re right tho that she’s super versatile and can sing anything. Thanks for watching and commenting!! So happy you enjoyed :) ❤️
She sings with a country style in most of her songs though, it’s obvious she grew up singing a long to country songs and admiring that. All of those bends and slides that she does, and a lot of those vocal brakes she has are very country like. It’s cool.

@@kaylee5438 yeah she does. She doesn’t do many country songs but the point was that you can tell she is influenced by country music with the vocal breaks, yodels, and twang she has sometimes. (Her album Stronger has lots of country vibes on it) Also gospel. In addition to her influences of classic rock and Mariah Carey and other pop and r&b singers
Can we just talk about Kelly vibin and singing the back ups to Arianas songs.
Literally the first 60 seconds and I subscribed. I just laughed so hard because how you were in the first 60 is exactly my type of personality and quirkiness.
Then you went on about some really deep important truth about why singing competitions aren’t always the best for these talented artists, or for the viewers who truly want to learn more by watching!

Hi Erika. Another great analysis video. This one you really worked it, especially with two superstar singers with contrasting vocal ranges. Both singing different stylistic and genre songs. I agree on most vocal and talent shows, but on The Voice, on the later seasons anyway, they constantly give actual technical critiques. Especially on Kelly's seasons. Aside from that this was so fun to watch these two talented women have fun showcasing some amazing vocals and impressions! The talent is off the charts! Also, I find it odd that on so many reactions to this clip, there are so many people who do not know Shania Twain, Toni Braxton and Cher songs?!?! That blows my mind.

Two vocal powerhouses slaying 'pop divas' (tho some of the ones given to KC were debatable) was so fun to see you react to! Especially Kelly, the Queen of Covers, and Ari who can be a vocal chameleon on top of everything else. Would love to see you react to more of Kelly Clarkson, especially Kellyoke, a portion of her talk show where she does brief covers of fan-chosen and permission-granted songs.
Irrelevant detail: this actually isn't from NBC's The Voice, but a new show on NBC hosted by Jimmy Fallon that had the Voice coaches on its premiere episode.
And I don't know if The Voice is just more lax on coaches giving technical advice, or if no one dared to tell Ariana Grande what to do, but I remember her and Kelly giving technical advice-less so in front of the live studio audience, so you may actually enjoy the practice sessions with the Voice coaches and their guest coach. (My musical theatre heart adored that Ari had Kristin Chenoweth as her guest coach. Also that season had Ed Sheeran, so, stars align.)

Toni Braxton is the singer I like to mimic sometimes. She definitely influenced my music. You should check out Unbreak My Heart. It’s a classic.

And if you’re gonna talk about who influenced modern singing, you need to include Celine Dion. This is the second time I’ve heard you not do that. There is a singing Trinity, not a singing duo.

Any Jessie J performance from when she was on “The Singer” are incredddibleee. My Heart Will Go On is very emotional and personal for Jessie so she really gives it her all and it’s just beautiful

The voice (America) is the only show actually that gives valuable lessons. Especially the past 10 seasons. You see the coaches work with them and give good music feedback

Agreed. The judges have given constructive feedback to auditioning singers, invited them to try again next year, and the people come back.
A favorite moment was when Ricky Martin was a judge. One singer auditioning was really good, but his dream was to sing on Broadway. All the judges praised the singer for his talent, but they said his wasn't right for the show. That said, Ricky recognized the singer's style and promised to connect the singer with his own agent to get the singer an audition for Broadway.
