Salt of Kanawha: Unearthing Appalachia’s Buried Treasure

  • The briny legacy of an ancient sea under the Appalachian mountains is inspiring a seventh generation of salt-makers to resuscitate their family business. Their incredibly structured salt is, in turn, inspiring chefs across the country - most notably Sean Brock - to standardize on its use in their restaurants.

Fascinating....and indicative of West Virginian's tenacity and ingenuity. We sought this out while visiting our children in Charleston after experiencing the flavor difference in Dickinson salt!

Love it, love how she says she wants the salt to be a product of nature. Such a satisfying sound at the end of the video, scraping the salt... Gotta look this up and see if I can buy to taste.

There is a salt mine thousands of years old in the middle of Austria also in the middle of Poland, and Pakistan there are salt mines. It all has to do with the geology of the area. I think it's great that this industry is being revived here.

I didn't know untul recently that there were salt flates theiughout Appalachia. West Virginia had flats and Daniel Boone discovered them for settlers and mapped the areas. I had no idea.

Very nice video. I feel sad for these people as this video takes a nostalgic feel. I want these people to have their salt business back, but there are so many salt companies producing cheap salt it is unlikely.

Well most of the commercially available salt is bleached and chemical processed. It's no real surprise that you didn't know that, funny guy.😁

Guess any business will die out if you lose slave labor. How come the filmmakers didn't mention the amount of slaves who died working those mines before the civil war? Not to mention the amount of slaves who escaped to Ohio with the help of the underground railroad.? You can't fool all the people.

Can't liberals let one video be made without it being about racism or some other non problem they want cry about?
Almost Every country in the world has had slavery in one form or another so get over it, you are not special.

I don’t think anyone’s ‘crying’ but you. You seem so antagonised by the fact that someone pointed out that some facts were missing from a ‘factual’ documentary. The fact that the slave trade is well documented and it was an awful thing mainly for one race for over 400 years is a fact. No one is trying to be special, just speaking the truth. instead of getting so offended by the truth, spend some more time focussing on using what little brain cells you have left to read a book and learn a few things, before spewing nonsense.😂

It's you that could benefit from a little reading. Since you are so interested in dealing with facts here are a few. The supply side of the western slave trade was controlled by west African tribes who were the ones that raided and captured members of more vulnerable group to sell at slave their markets. These tribes had been involved in this industry since Islamic invasion of western Africa kick off the Saharan/Islamic slave trade a thousand year prior. When African sold their slaves to the Europeans they were loaded on ship that were owned predominantly by Jews. So as you can see everyone had their hand in the slavery cookie jar. So climb down from high horse you sanctimonious jackass
