Barry Switzer is one of the top five coaches I have seen personally coach football on the sidelines. His decisions during the game were based on calculated percentages. Great coach and recruiter. Greatest feat: He recruited all the Selmon brothers out of Eufala on the Canadian River. The guy coached lights out. Watched Joe Washington run 78 yards for a TD against the Missouri Tigers to win the game. Great coach!
The man has a million stories. I've had the pleasure to interact with him one-on-one a couple of times. He always gave you full consideration. It's getting late in the day. Gonna miss him.
I have the great honor of knowing Coach Switzer. He is one of the most brilliant, charismatic, and misunderstood coaches ever. When Coach Switzer says something, contrary to he belief of some of the Texas media types, he is honest to a fault. His mind is still sharp as ever. What a legend and great man! He touched the lives of a lot young men and other student athletes.
Barry Switzer coached 16 years at OU 15 of his 16 teams finished in the AP top 20 12 of his 16 teams finished in the AP top 7 9 of his 16 teams finished in the AP top 3 7 of his 16 teams are recognized by at least 3 or more official ncaa selectors as National Champions 3 of his 16 teams won the AP National Championship The King 157-29-4
No one deserved it more. Barry was an excellent college coach, three championships, one of the best winning percentages ever. He also won the super bowl in dallas, the last time dallas was really a good team.
One of the first to aggressively recruit black athletes at a time the country was not that far removed from segregation. Barry never saw color, just talent.
A man once told me a story about how his car broke down and he was walking down the road in Norman one day back in the 70s and it was pouring rain. Nobody ever stopped to see if he was ok or anything. Finally one car did stop and asked if he was ok and needed a ride. He got in the car. The person was Barry Switzer.
Barry Switzer was the best coach of Oklahoma. He came 2 my high school 2 recruit my cousin. I saw him going N2 weight room where my cousin was. N high school, we ran the wishbone offense & I-fornation. He also had black players 2 play quarterback when no-1 else would let play that position. Thomas Lott was the wishbone quarterback 4 Oklahoma back n the 70s.
He was way before my time watching college football, but I watched the 30 for 30 on Brian Bosworth. I did, of course, watch Oklahoma beat FSU for the BCS championship. Does he compare to Bob Stoops?
As an OU fan, he is an absolute legend. Changed the game for sure. He's seen as one of the greats here, if not THE greatest. Plenty of great coaches have come through OU, Bob was one of the greats. Barry could be called the greatest. 🙌
@@RobbieStacks90 Not comparable really. Barry was one of a kind. Smoked cigs on the sidelines. When they were blowing someone out, he could be seen sitting down and eating a hot dog or something on the bench. Won 3 nattys. Bob only got 1. Some crazy recruiting stories. Barry would walk around in a fur coat with championship rings all over his fingers. Great coach but even better human. Amazing that his mind is still so sharp at 87.
Bob Stoops had 1 undefeated season & 1 one loss season at Oklahoma. Barry Switzer had 2 undefeated seasons & 6 one loss seasons. Switzer's teams won 12 conference titles & finished 2nd the other 4 seasons. Barry is possibly the most popular person in the state of Oklahoma, even bigger than the big-name musicians.
You play and coach in your time frame, it is really a different game then verses now. Barry dominated the game for 15 years. Bob had a great career under very different times.
Great interview, Paul. I got to do some artwork for coach Switzer in the mid 80's. I painted action pictures of all his wishbone quarterbacks. From Steve Davis to Danny Bradley. He was a great guy and treated me special. We bartered for season tickets, Texas tickets, and a sideline pass. Those were great times.
My husband and I both coached in Oklahoma and Barry would always sit down with the high school coaches at the coach’s clinic and talked to them about whatever they won’t to. The coach from the other university wouldn’t do that.
OU fired Bob Stoops brother Mike Stoops just days after that Army game he talked about with Kyler Murray barely winning the game. Bob left his brother Mike for Lincoln Riley to have to terminate and managed to beat a struggling Auburn and retired. A 4 loss ARMY team actually did rush for like 600 against Mike Stoops defense for 45 minutes. Barry is truly the OU Legend. Things would be different at OU if Barry was hiring the coordinators. He had some great ones.
Barry Switzer; the coach whose teams could hand half-a-hundred on their opponents. Far cry from now when they're lucky if they hang half-a-dozen on the other team.
A say BS - Switzer is a legendary coach and really did a lot for the game. However his success is a couple of decades removed from Oklahoma joining the SEC. So what happens if Oklahoma defects yet to another conference? Is he still an SEC legend even though he never coached/Oklahoma not a member. 😂
@BobbyMoore2-mp8wp - Dude get outta here quick. Switzer's 1970s teams were MORE dominant than the Miami teams of the 1980s/1990s AND the recent Alabama teams. There is no question that we had the best team in the nation in 1978. Also, the 1985 NC team wasn't bad either.
Barry is a national treasure! Wish we still had coaches like that roaming the sidelines in college football.
Lol.. STOP SMOKING CRACK
I'm a Vol and hats off to legendary Barry switzer glad to have OU in the conference. A Great program. They will right the ship
A true legend of college football. One of the best ever! I could listen to his stories all day. Reminds me of listening to grandpa back in the day.

I attended OU from 1955 to 1959 when Bud Wilkinson was coach.Good memories.🏈
I’m sorry you are having to witness Oklahoma football in 2024. It’s a far cry from when bud was coach

Thank you Paul for giving TV time to the old coach from Norman. Barry's Stories are always awesome.
He looks amazing for his age, 87.
Cocaine must be a good preservative... lol!!
Long live coach Switzer!

Congratulations Coach Switzer! So many lives are better because you pour your life into theirs.

I read his book Bootleggers Boy as a kid,,,amazing read
You could interview him every week. "NIL" priceless!
Lol. And you SHOULD STOP SMOKING CRACK
He always had his teams ready to play. What memory and what heart for his players....Definitely one of the best to have ever coached.

Coach gave OU it's BBQ sauce.

Barry is a legend. He will live to be 200. He sounds like he is not a day over 50
Idiotic, ignorant and beyond foolish.
Put down the crack pipe and

I love Coach Switzer
I love listening to Barry's stories. Barry has forgotten more about football than any of us will ever know.

Good old bagman Berry Switzer there's been a few books written about it from people that actually handed money off.
Barry Switzer; the coach whose teams could hand half-a-hundred on their opponents. Far cry from now when they're lucky if they hang half-a-dozen on the other team.
Props to OU for recruiting black athletes when a good chunk of cleege athletics were segregated. From a Longhorn.
Salute him but the sec is reachin man lmao they do soooooooo much
They had fur coats and vettes too, back then
SEC legends class? Oklahoma was never in the SEC during his tenure.
He was at Arkansas!
Barry was a SEC player, he just happened to win 3 national championships as a coach with a team that’s now in the SEC.
@@Ok-Mardy close, but that was SWC in his days.
I think Barry said we don’t really have the coin to compete w/the big dogs?
Why?
BARELY SWITZER WAS NEVER IN THE SEC!
He never freaking coached in the SEC! Ridiculous
He was coach of Arkansas in 61-65 LOL
@@baselt6552that wasn’t the SEC
He didnt need to be in the SEC to win at the highest level. This was the SEC's way of welcoming OU.
Roy Rodgers son?

You need to go watch OU 70’s and the 84,85 teams. You just might learn something of which you know nothing about.
So many new CFB fans who don't know the history of the sport.
He has 3 NC Trophies and 4 rings one being a Superbowl. What is your claim to fame smart guy?
