IMO… Cory’s videos are by far the best fly fishing videos on the internet. They are the perfect blend of entertainment and education. Watching his videos, I’ve learned a lot on reading water. I’ve had great success with his Jack Daniel’s pattern (in Pennsylvania).
Cory...I am tired just watching that video. What a bunch of beasts. When you see how big the tails are on those fish, you can understand why they are so strong. That, and swimming in that current helps build muscle. Thanks for sharing your set up, patterns and excellent presentation. The Madison is a special place.
Haha! Thanks, Frank! They are some SERIOUS fighters on the Madison. Hardest fighting trout I have ever caught. Just LOVE it there. Appreciate you watching, my friend!
Another great video ! That kind of water tests the skill of an angler’s ability to catch and land a fish. That’s Formula 1 of fly fishing right there ! Enjoyed watching you navigating these runs! Tight lines!
Omg! Those are some beasts!! I'm away in Israel for a cpl weeks for a nieces wedding, I believe there are no wild trout in the entire country... Good for you Cory!
Hi Cory. Thank you very much for your advice, it helps me a lot to enjoy our passion. Once again, I congratulate you for sharing your knowledge. Greetings from Asturias, Spain.
I spent ten days on the Madison about the time you were there. The fish are strong, but I am in awe of your wading stamina and strength. The water is ripping, and it is hard to overstate the challenge of wading it for hours on end. I'd welcome your comments on wading such challenging water.
Hey Jason. You are right about the Madison...the current is relentless. And the fish are the strongest I've ever hooked. When it comes to wading, the best advice I can give is the same I give to my wife: Just relax when wading; don't tense up. When you are tense, you are apprehensive. When you are apprehensive, you will react quickly to the current, which will, in turn, can get you off balance. Just relax, don't fight the current, and make sure each foot is firmly on the bottom of the stream before you pick one up. Other than that, I guess I'm blessed with pretty good balance!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks, Cory - great advice. One decision that worked for me on the Madison and other challenging rivers, was to get aluminum bar soles for boots (I have Korkers). By the end of the trip I was calling them river crampons - they made a huge difference, though the added weight was noticeable, as were tired legs. On the other hand, drowning didn't cut into my fishing time! Thanks again for all you do and teach.
Drowning will definitely cut into your fishing! I have heard the bars are great. I have gone back to felt after a long layoff. I feel felt with studs is a great gripping combo.
Felicitaciones muy buenos tus videos y gracias por compartir tus conocimientos explicados de manera clara para seguir aprendiendo de este maravilloso mundo de la pesca deportiva
Loved this, Cory! I’m a fellow VA guy, and started fishing MT in the early 90s and the Madison is at/near the top of my list. SO much water, so many bugs, so many STRONG fish. I am still learning to master the light lining thing, and I appreciate the time you take to explain how you approach each part of the river. Tight lines dude.
Thank you, CCI! The Madison is a special place for sure. Strongest trout I have ever hooked. It is at the top of my list. Good luck with your tight lining. Just practice that casting! Tight lines from one VA dude to another!
Hey Cory! You were made for Montana. You have the time of your life. Great video, those bows had some amazing paddles and the browns were beautiful.I was getting tired watching you😎 Thanks for the video and tight lines my friend!
Man, was I EVER, Dale! Just love it out there! Those fish give you a workout. Hardest fighting trout I have ever hooked. I slept like a baby that night! Appreciate you watching, my friend. Tight lines to you, as well!
Nice video Cory! I just got back from The Madison only fished it for a day, but it is a beautiful place. I should have spent more time in the faster pockets like you did, I like your choice of weight for those sections I probably was a bit underweighted. I unfortunately caught a lot of white fish in the softer areas and between the lakes, but trout as well. Love your content and it is always helpful.
Thanks, Patrick! It is a beautiful place for sure. I fished up between the lakes, as well. Great area. The next time you hit it you will be ready! Appreciate you watching and glad the channel has been helpful. Tight lines!
For sure I would have went under a couple of times chasing those studs in that current, nice work staying up , don’t know how you do it ! Nice work picking them off in tough flows Cory ! Again the Jack comes through, did you have success with any other flies ? Awesome video and tight lines 🤛
Haha. It’s combat fishing, Tony! Appreciate it brother. The Jack is a good one. Definitely my go-to. I did get them on others, as well. Stone Pony in a size 12. Walts in 12s and 14s. France Midge and peacock lite brite perdigons in 18s and 20s. Thanks for watching and tight lines to you, as well👊

I just want to say thank you for everything you do because you made me a better fly fisherman and I’m passing it on to whoever I can. I just have to ask what is your preferred cigar out on the stream?
Thank you, Mike! Glad the Jack Daniel's is being good to you! And happy the channel has helped! Awesome you are passing it on. I love a nice Dominican cigar. Macanudo, Patagas, etc...Out on the water, I usually smoke a JR brand that is less expensive. I need it to be able to take on some water!
Hello. Thank you for publishing all your knowledge and experience of euro nymphing. I learn a lot from your videos (I thing I watched all of them, many of them more than once), and I refer back to them. One topic I could have missed, or maybe it has not been elaborated yet im your series, is fishing two nymps vs. one nymph. Perhaps, you could write or make a video on this? When do you switch from two nymps to single nymph? Does it affect your fishing efficiency? What bead sizes do you use when fishing two nymps vs. one nymph? Etc.... I often think I should change from two to one, but don’t do it because I am afraid it will lower the numer of fish I catch (which is not impressive anyway).
Hey Mike. Glad the videos have been helpful. I haven't done a video specifically on one nymph vs two, but I have referenced it a number of times in my past videos. I fish a single nymph a ton. Low water, small pocket water, shallow, or anytime you have a lot of converging currents closer to one another. It doesn't affect your efficiency, it will only make you better. Where I was fishing in this video, even though it was pocket water, the pockets were quite wide and I could easily keep my flies in the same seam. I would suggest (especially if you are newer) fishing a single nymph because it will be better for you. You will be more accurate and get better drifts. You just need to adjust your weight accordingly. It is a lot to unpackage here in a few paragraphs. You are welcome to dig deeper with me in a one-on-one. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBumThank you for your reply. When you fish with one nymph only, is there any minimum bead size you use? To make the nymph more visible for fish? I’m asking because using two nymphs is - I guess - to increase the chance fish will find your flies. And what is the deph you consider to be too shalllow to fish two nymphs? - i.e. the depth you decide to switch to single nymph to improve your drift. Is it 2, 3 feet?? And one more question, if you don’t mind, from a different category: is there any depth you consider to be too deep for efficient euro nymphing? I mean the depth is too big and the tippet too long to trust your sighter to detect strikes. Have a good day!
The beads are used to get your fly to depth, not to make it visible to the trout. Depending on the depth/current, the smallest I use is a 2mm bead. You can fish two 2mm beads in a foot of water. There are no hard and fast rules…everything is situational. Most trout feed in 3ft or less water. They rest in deeper water. If you want to catch more trout, you need to focus on the water they are feeding in. Luckily, most rivers and streams that trout live in have this type of water. Once again, if you are a beginner don’t get hung up on 2 flies. Fish a single fly and get really good at it-you will end up catching more.
Welcome back to my / our hood, Mr. Cory. In your opening scene, we often fish directly across from you, among other locations. Last year, you were at Reynolds Pass. Regardless, it's nice to see you around. Additionally, that's two years in a row that I / we missed seeing you on the water. Next year, perhaps? Also, the Ms. ties all of our flies. She just received the final materials to tie your Jack Daniel's. She's going to start tying them tonight. Do you have any tips or suggestions for her in doing so? I, too, use 5x on this water. Most people scoff at me / us for doing so. Plus, we also use 30' leaders. I noticed that you were back to your 3Wt rod. Bigger water, bigger rod. The Ms. uses her Diamondback 10' 2Wt. I'm still using my T&T 10'6" 3Wt. That back channel that you were in at the end of your video is popular. It's nice. Thanks for the video, Cory. American Nympher, out.
Love your hood, American Nympher! That is one heck of an area I was at. I'll be back again next year, so hopefully we will run into one another. I'll be the guy with the cigar... Happy to hear that the Ms. is going to tie the Jack Daniel's. I think you are going to like it. My biggest tip is that the right amount of thread wraps is important to keep each fly consistent. The Madison is definitely 3wt and 5x territory for me. And you can see the amount of pressure you can put on 5x. Between the rod tip, the stretch of the leader, and the strength of the tippet...I feel pretty darn confident. That back channel is incredible. As is the whole river. Appreciate you watching. Hope to see you out there! Old Dominion Trout Bum, out.
Thanks for another great video. I've been loving your content. What camera setup are you using? I have a big trip coming up and I want to get as much good on the water fishing footage as I can. Thanks for your input!
Another great video. As I mentioned in a previous post , wife and I are heading to Ennis on Sunday for 10 days. On your other video of the Madison you responded to me 3 dollar bridge and I think Reynolds bridge, is that the area you're fishing in this video? Nobody around. Chasing fish reminds me of chasing steelhead on the Erie tribs and the Salmon river. Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Once again you're the best. Walt
Thank you, Walt! This is that area. The whole upper Madison is great. All you have to do is walk away from the parking lots and the people thin out. Fish the water that others are not. All of the water is like this...so be prepared to chase! Good luck to you and your wife!
Corey Your videos are so fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. It is a great way for us new to the sport to gain insight. I’ve been meaning to schedule a 1 on 1 call while on the river to get more detail advice. Are you still offering that service?
Hey Cory I wanted to ask you what net do you use? I went euro nymphing for the first time yesterday on the esopus and I caught over a dozen of my first ever bows and 2 browns. One of my browns slipped out of my net that I got off amazon and the net is not deep enough to make it comfortable for me to keep the fish in the water when de hooking them.
Recon, I am not a fan of those shallow rubber nets at all. They are like spring boards. Fish, especially larger ones, will bounce right out. Watch this video. In it I talk about the net I use and why: th-cam.com/video/wiou1rwSfMg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QpymwtcdqjosjIxl Congrats on your Esopus. Love that river.
@@OldDominionTroutBum thank you Cory I appreciate it and your work. I’ve watched a lot of your videos religiously for about a year before finally trying to euro nymph myself. It’s one of the most exciting outings I have ever done and there are more to come.
Way to much fun! What town are you by? We're going to be in Island Park Idaho in October and I've been thinking of driving up to the Madison. Thanks for another great video!
Thanks, TL. It was a blast! We were in Ennis. If you are in Island Park, you are only 40 min away from the Madison. You have to hit it. You will have the whole place to yourself. Appreciate you watching and enjoy your October trip!
@@OldDominionTroutBumThanks for the reply! I have a couple more questions if you don't mind. It looks like we might be going up to Ennis for a couple of days after the family thing in Island Park. We've driven through there a couple times on our way to Virginia City, but that's all I know about it. From Ennis would you suggest fishing up or down...or both? Then there's a bridge, I think they call it Three dollar bridge. Is that a good place to start? What size tippet were you using? I don't generally catch fish that big where I live. I will probably be fishing with a 10'6 3wt Moonshine Vesper. Thanks again for your Knowledge.
@@OldDominionTroutBumOK. I just watched the video again. You were using 5X. That's what I was thinking. So, I guess just the questions about up steam from Ennis or down. Out by that bridge. Thanks again, your videos are much appreciated!
Thank you, PT! The flows were around 1300 CFS. The water is ALWAYS rolling there. Once you get up to your thighs the next step could easily take you downstream. Keeps you on your toes!
Hi Cory. I have the Thomas and Thomas and I am going to buy the Galvan GEN reel. I have seen that on the 10.9 line 2 rod you have sometimes used the 3.25 model and other times the 3.5. Please, which model do you think balances the rod best?
It amazes me how much slower your drifts are compared to the surrounding current. Also, you were fighting one of those big bows and I was thinking “must be using 5x” and not a second later you go “if you’re wondering I’m using 5x”. I guess we were both sweating the amount of pull that bow was putting on the line haha. What a fight.
Thanks, Casey. It is all about driving those bugs through that current to get it to slow down. And haha, yes. Definitely a 5x day for me. You have to put some serious heat on those fish. They are some of the strongest fighting trout I have ever caught. Every fish is a workout. Just a blast. Thanks for watching!
It is fast! In this video, I was using a 3.3mm on the bottom and a 2.5mm on my dropper. During the week when the wind kicked up, you occasionally had to go to a 3.8mm. Appreciate you watching!
Cory, were you using a double fly rig or a single? How big of a bead? Also, it looks like you’re using a 2 or 3wt. What are you using? Definitely a good trip. Tony
Hey Tony. I was using my T&T 10'9" 3wt. During this video, I was using 2 flies. I had a 3.3mm bead on the bottom and a 2.5mm on the dropper. Appreciate you watching!
Hi, I was wondering what boots you use on the slickest roundest rocks in creation. I have use the felt with spikes and Patagonia with aluminum cleats. I am 79 so grip is important on the Madison. Thanks
Jom, I have Simms Flyweights with Felt bottoms and hardbite studs. The felt with the studs is a 10 out of 10 for me. They stick to the bottom. Super safe. Thanks for watching and keep getting at it!
I noticed that you often do not pinch any line in your rod hand when retrieving slack during the drift. You just use the first guide and your left hand. Is there an advantage to this? Or is it just a style thing? When I don't have line running across my middle finger on my rod hand, I feel less connected to the feel of the drift. What are your thoughts? Great video and thanks for all your content!
KE, it is one of the ways I manage my line. I do this a lot in this type of water. When you are in super fast water, sometimes that split second it takes to move your line to your middle finger could hinder your ability to connect immediately. You'll see me move it over to my middle finger when the water is slightly slower. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching. I have actually done a video on line management where I talk about the different ways: th-cam.com/video/yKwZe1_HJ_E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yrbKGqks-10_-y5Q
@@OldDominionTroutBum Update! This technique I picked up from your video has helped me a ton in really fast water. It’s given me contact on the first half of my drift that I didn’t have before. Appreciate your help. Cheers.
Hey Cory, great stuff! Will you be moving out west? 😄 We like it out here. I’m curious why you went with 29’ of leader there. Isn’t your typical around 18’?
Trust me, Kurt, we will be moving out West. It is going to happen! I adjust my leader length back and forth really depending on the time of year and what I am trying to do. When it is colder out and I have less feeling, I will shorten it to have more fly line in hand. When it's warmer or I want to cast farther, I'll go longer. I would rather start out long, then shorten if I need to. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum ok, so you’re often managing leader in your left hand. I’m not too comfortable with that yet. I’ll get there. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate what you’ve done for my life. I was not a good indicator fisher and didn’t like rivers so I’d sit around all winter and wait for the lakes to thaw. Last winter I was learning, tying flies and fishing every week (and kicking ass at it.) I have something to get excited about again and I thank you for that buddy
Howdy Cory wow that was awesome. The Jack Daniels kicked ass. I am curious what is that strap on the butt of rod to your reel or am I seeing things lol peace
Hey Fudd! The JD did kick some ass! What you see is a hairband from my wife. I attach it to my reel and around the butt because sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching, my friend!
Mid-July/peak season and no crowds? Unbelievable and another place to add to the list... Great footage. BTW, I modified your Jack Daniels with chartreuse thread, white CDC and silver bead and the Grayling here in Slovakia love it! Thanks for the inspiration.
People are there, JJ. But just like anywhere else...you just need to walk away and then you have the place to yourself. The Madison should be on any fly fisherman's list. It's paradise. Glad your JD variation is working for you! Na zdravie!
Thanks, Michael! It is a hair band from my wife. I attach it to my reel and around the butt because sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching.
Pretty sure you have a hair band running between the butt of the rod and the back pillar of the reel. It keeps the line from going behind the reel and wrapping around the reel seat. This can happen really easily with a euro rig and leads to lost fish. Cory is avoiding that problem.

Appreciate it, Chris! I have a GoPro Hero 12 on a chest mount. Good luck with your upcoming trip. Tight lines!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Awesome, thanks for the feedback. 👍
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thank you for your quick response. You're the best.
Corey
Your videos are so fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. It is a great way for us new to the sport to gain insight.
I’ve been meaning to schedule a 1 on 1 call while on the river to get more detail advice. Are you still offering that service?
Thanks, Bob. Appreciate it. I do offer one-on-ones. You can go to my website and contact me there.
www.olddominiontroutbum.com/contact
Happy to help.
Those rainbows wear you out on Madison 😂
YES, THEY DO, G. Appreciate you watching!
In it I talk about the net I use and why:

Congrats on your Esopus. Love that river.
@@OldDominionTroutBum thank you Cory I appreciate it and your work. I’ve watched a lot of your videos religiously for about a year before finally trying to euro nymph myself. It’s one of the most exciting outings I have ever done and there are more to come.
Cory do you have a place to source the Pezon leader in the USA, per chance?
I don’t, Kurt. I get it from Riversfly out of Spain.
Great video Cory! Love the action. What were the flows out there?? The water looks like it would sweep me away!
Thank you, PT! The flows were around 1300 CFS. The water is ALWAYS rolling there. Once you get up to your thighs the next step could easily take you downstream. Keeps you on your toes!
@@OldDominionTroutBum hahaha, I know that feeling. Thanks for the reply
Hi Cory. I have the Thomas and Thomas and I am going to buy the Galvan GEN reel. I have seen that on the 10.9 line 2 rod you have sometimes used the 3.25 model and other times the 3.5. Please, which model do you think balances the rod best?
Hey Javier. On my 10ft 9in 2wt, I really like the Galvan 3.25. The 3.5 also works great, but I prefer that on my 10ft 9in 3wt.
Another great video Cory. Is that Galvan the Euro model? Thanks as always.
Thanks, Michael! Yes, it is the Galvan GEN 3.5. It is a great reel. Appreciate you watching. Tight lines.
Nice video Cory. What time of year was that fishing session on the Madison?
Thanks, Todd! It was mid July. Appreciate you watching!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks Cory. Pretty stiff flows then!
@Toddcm haha-yes there was!
Love your videos. How many days a year are you on the water?
Thank you, James. I probably average 100 days or so. Always want more though!
@Cory, nice work! Are you fishing upper or lower Madison here?
Appreciate it! I was on the Upper. Thanks for watching!
What size bead heads were you throwing in that water? Looks fast!
It is fast! In this video, I was using a 3.3mm on the bottom and a 2.5mm on my dropper. During the week when the wind kicked up, you occasionally had to go to a 3.8mm.
Appreciate you watching!
Wow👍
😎🎣
Hey Cory had a question. What is your formula for a micro leader?
Hey Jason. It is 29ft of .18mm Pezon. I have it in the description. Appreciate you watching.
I have actually done a video on line management where I talk about the different ways:
th-cam.com/video/yKwZe1_HJ_E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yrbKGqks-10_-y5Q
@@OldDominionTroutBummakes total sense! I catch myself losing control at times from exactly that when in fast water. I’ll give it a go! Thanks!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Update! This technique I picked up from your video has helped me a ton in really fast water. It’s given me contact on the first half of my drift that I didn’t have before. Appreciate your help. Cheers.
@@KRUSEELITE Glad it is helpful. Keep it up and continued success to you!
Cory , I do not tie flies but can you give me some direction where I can purchase Jack Daniel nymphs? thanks.....
Jim, Fleegler’s Flies sells the Jack Daniel’s. He does a great job. Tight lines to you.
Cory, are you using split shot?
No. All my flies are weighted with tungsten beads of various sizes. Thanks for watching.
Na zdravie!
I’d be lookin for a spot to sit down for a few minutes after that third fish.
Haha. I slept well that night, Larry. Appreciate you watching!
Great outing! What is that on the back of your reel to the rod butt?
Thanks, Michael! It is a hair band from my wife. I attach it to my reel and around the butt because sometimes your thin leader can get caught behind the reel and get wrapped around the butt. This eliminates the problem. Appreciate you watching.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Interesting, would not have thought of that as it hasn't happened yet, thank you
Pretty sure you have a hair band running between the butt of the rod and the back pillar of the reel. It keeps the line from going behind the reel and wrapping around the reel seat. This can happen really easily with a euro rig and leads to lost fish. Cory is avoiding that problem.
That makes sense I believe you’re right
Exactly, Leigh! Appreciate you watching. Tight lines to you!
@@OldDominionTroutBumUnlike Cory’s hairband collection, I’ll have to ask my wife if I can borrow one. 😅
